The sermon this Sunday was brought by Pastor Brian, with the young adults team leading the service. The central message was that God consistently chooses inconvenient moments and circumstances to show up and encounter his people, and that the invitation is to stop, turn aside, and recognize what he is doing rather than plowing through or avoiding the discomfort. The conversation drew on Moses at the burning bush, stories from the congregation, and passages from Song of Solomon and Luke.
What was said
Pastor Brian opened by reflecting on the Sukkot camping trip the tribe family had just come through at Little Granite Creek. Nearly fifty people made it down for the bonfire on Friday night, and by most accounts it was a meaningful time. But getting there was genuinely inconvenient, and he was honest that on the drive home, unpacking gear and doing laundry, his first thought was that he was glad this tradition only comes once a year.
That honest moment became the thread the whole message followed. In Exodus 3, Moses is doing nothing more than his ordinary shepherd's work when a burning bush catches his eye. The key detail Pastor Brian kept returning to was that Moses had a choice. The bush was not blocking his path. He could have noted it and walked on. The text says he chose to "turn aside," and it was only in that turning that God called out to him. The encounter waited on the decision to step into the inconvenience.
From there the congregation was invited into the conversation, and story after story came forward. Jonah, the bleeding woman pushing through a crowd that had no interest in her, Peter throwing his nets on the other side after a full night of failed fishing, John writing Revelation from exile on Patmos, Lydia opening her home in a way that created the conditions for the church in Philippi to take root. The pattern that kept surfacing was that the encounter was always there, but it was hidden inside something that looked like a problem or a disruption.
Pastor Brian was also careful to draw a clear line. Not every hard thing carries God's fingerprints as its cause. He said plainly that God did not give Clay cancer, and that conflating divine inconvenience with suffering caused by sickness or abuse would be a serious mistake. The question is not whether God caused the hard thing, but whether, in the middle of it, there is an opportunity to turn aside.
Two passages from Song of Solomon helped him describe what that turning looks like. The beloved has already settled in for the night, her feet washed, her robe off, and her lover comes and knocks. The inconvenience is the timing, not the relationship. Later in the same book, when she sets her heart on pursuing him despite the cost of getting up and going out, the encounter she finds is described as the deepest kind of intimacy. Pastor Brian used these to argue that God is not randomly disrupting schedules, but coming close at moments when the contrast between our own comfort and his presence will make the encounter unmistakable.
He landed with a verse from Luke 5 that he said screams inconvenience. In the teaching about new wine and old wineskins, there is a line that says no one who drinks old wine wants new wine, saying the old is good enough. The resistance is not really about wine. It is about not wanting to be inconvenienced. Pastor Brian's suggestion for telling a God-shaped inconvenience from ordinary life friction was what he called the fragrance of heaven, a quality he left deliberately unscripted, asking people to sit with what that phrase means rather than handing them a definition.
The congregation closed the message together, with people naming circumstances they had been trying to push through, and Pastor Brian praying that they would have, as he put it, their sniffer in the air so they would not miss a transformative encounter hiding inside something that just looked like an inconvenience.

Let's declare this today. Just get this morning, just lay aside the distractions of your mind. Just press in and fix your eyes on him today.
Okay. While we're standing here, I just feel like maybe somebody offered up a prayer of, like, just super honesty of, Lord, help me. I sometimes it's hard for me to trust my mind. And maybe they're they're they're wrestling with maybe some instability in their mind. And so father, you you heard that prayer.
You heard that prayer. And I ask God that you would release the gift of a sound mind to that individual that lifted that up, to maybe more than one person or maybe somebody watching the livestream. Lord, release a sound over that person, that individual. May your grace just come and and like the the the song that we sang earlier as the spirit was moving over the waters, come rest on us. Would you hover over their mind?
Bring healing to their mind. Bring bring peace to their heart, Jesus. Grant the gift of a sound mind. Let's just continue to continue to do that a little more. And if you don't know what to pray, you can just tell them I love you.

I have a testimony of freedom and healing from bondage that I didn't even know existed. So three weeks, three Sundays ago, Lissa sent out be in

didn't know why I felt in in that way.
We're Don't take it
personal. So this is what he said to me. He said, be patient and be and choose your words carefully. In other words, don't speak a curse on yourself because you don't know what's going on yet. So, Sunday morning, I told Colin, I said, wait, I'm not going to church.
I can't. And Jesus said, it's it's okay. He told me again, we're listening. One one thing I won't miss is worship. So, we're listening.

Yeah. No. No. It's it's I'm sorry. It's it's
But continue the
I'm just I'm just speaking what is flowing. So, Melissa, to her compliment, she that first song, give me a new wineskin. That wasn't her. That was the Holy Spirit implanting that in her. And we're singing it and I'm singing it and all of a sudden, wineskin.
I renounce, I reject, rip off. I throw this old wineskin off right now in Jesus name. Boom. It comes off and there was three rocks that hit the ground. I mean, sounds weird but I saw this and then I I felt a new wineskin come on to me.
I had peace. My joy was restored. I I it was really it was just it was a miracle. And so, then, blackness. He spoke a word of knowledge.
He probably didn't even know it was a word of knowledge but it was a word of knowledge that pierced my heart And the substance of it was, you know, sometimes when you're you're upset, you're gonna fire an email off. I'm going, yeah. That's how I feel. I'm gonna fire an email off. I don't know where.
And, you know, he said be patient and think about it. Yada yada yada. Well, that word of knowledge that he spoke confirmed what Jesus told me. And then I said, Lord, what what's this all about? What what what's going on?
And so he and I'm not gonna go into all the details too long, but he showed me that fifty years ago, I had an encounter at one of the big rocks. And then about forty years ago, another encounter at at a big rock. And then most recently, fifteen years ago or so, the church that we went to in Fresno, a very good friend of ours left the church and was going to a Jewish synagogue. Well, that sent something off of me. And then our chiropractor was trying to talk talk me into going to feast of shelters that he set up in his backyard.
And the Lord was bringing all these memories back that I didn't even I forgot about. But I said, Lord, I am I am not going to be persuaded to become a New Testament Judaizer. I don't want anything to do with that. And then the Lord reminded me of the bondage that Colleen and I came out, and we were deep into transcendental meditation. We were deep into new age movement, crystals and mystical stuff and and putting crystals on your head and altars.
And I was associating all of that past with the festival of shelters that Brian was going to talk about. And I said, Lord, I you know, I'm not I'm not going back. I'm not going back there. But then when he was when he quoted the scriptures out of Deuteronomy and Leviticus, the short version is that this this isn't about worshiping Judah, becoming a Judaizer. It's about worshiping God.
About what God wants to do. Then the thing that really helped me get free was that section that says even the foreigners. They they weren't Jews. They were foreigners that were there, and they went and participated in it. Anyway, so I say all this to say thank you, pastor Brian, for for doing what the Lord told you to do.
And and also, Alyssa, and also my my brother, wherever he is, Clay.
Clay. Yeah.
Because how how is it that god set all this up on a Sunday morning to set me free from something that I didn't even know was there. It was a it was a debondage. And and so the other thing is because he's good. I wanna encourage everyone. It's it's like, Colleen and I have helped many, many, many people come out of satanism.
So and and so it's like, no matter what your bondages are, no matter how icky you feel about yourself, God can still use you. He still uses us. We're all fallen. We all have rocks like I did that we don't know about. We don't just just keep going.
Just keep pursuing, Lord. Thank you, Jesus, for the freedom.
Pray that over us. Thank you. And will you just pray that over us, freedom over us. Yes. In
the name of Jesus, if there is anything here that's opposed to the presence and the power, the love of thank
time.

Okay. So, this past week, Clay and I, cancer has reared its ugly head again. And we had to go to Huntsman over in Salt Lake. They're wanting Clay to go through 38 treatments and he'll have to live in Salt Lake or Park City with a friend for seven weeks because it has to be done Monday through Friday every day but I can't think of a better cancer treatment center than right here in this room. You know?
And I believe that god is going to when they go do the scans, there's not gonna be any cancer. They have to do the scan before they do the treatment. And I know
that god can heal this
man. He's not finished with him and god knows I'm not finished with him. And I just want
us all to please believe that this is his treatment
center. The devil wants to steal any kind of victory that we can give. And two years ago, we gave victory because he
was cancer free. And he's trying to
take it back, but we're not gonna let him. And then I just
I know everybody in this room believes power of being
in prayer. That's right. And I'm just asking you to pray for this stubborn man because he's he's hard to get rid of. Okay? And I just know God's gonna use him as a testimony for others.
And
the
darkness. So bring clay to the table of healing, fullness. He's my brother, Lord. I just want to love on him and pray for him and speak life through him. Pray for joy for him.
Pray for faith to rise in this moment, in his mind and his marriage. So much faith. That will move the mountain. This mountain will be moved in the name of Jesus. And I speak healing and
the
time.
Something's gonna happen. I don't know what's gonna happen. God is gonna have a testimony out of this one way or the other. My faith is not diminished and by any degree. I stand tall.
I believe in Jesus, and I believe in the power of Jesus. Jeremy and I have been going through the truth project and I think we're almost done. We got one more one more episode but if I didn't learn anything It's a long one. Yeah. Well, anything through that what god has taught me is that I need to go back to his word.
Simple truths. Last week, we looked at labor, work, and god created it. Work. He's designed and made this universe that we're in. And he designed rest.
He designed marriage. He designed all these wonderful things and we just we just let him just go right over our head and we look to the world. Tell me one thing that the world has provided that has lasted and is genuine, that is true, that is honorable. It's just not there. God gave us his plan.
I am encouraging everybody here. Go get back in the word. You don't know the direction you need to go in. God does. God does.
I mean, right down to the the labor to to welfare. You know, he he gave the example of don't clean everything in the in the in the vineyard. Don't go back and pick up things and give it to the poor. Let them have the opportunity to work and go pick up and provide for themselves. I don't wanna get on it.

can I can go a lot of directions with that but so just I want you to think about that? I want you to spend some time and just realize there is so much in god's word for you that is true, long lasting, y'all don't worry about me. I'm in god's hands and good things are gonna happen. Anybody

Where are the boys? Good morning. If you have a bible with you this morning, let's start. We're gonna go to a couple places, but let's start in the book of Exodus. And while we while we're waiting for the book of Exodus to load on our phones, Wanna share with you a a quick update that our friend Susan sent us.
We call her our Susan. Some of you maybe many of you are familiar with our Susan, but she spends a lot of her time in Israel working for ministry there and she was in and around Jerusalem last weekend when things started to heat up. And our friends Jacob and Gretchen were there. They've since got out of Israel, and they're safe, and they'll be back, I think, on Monday ish. But Susan is still there.
She's up north of the Sea Of Galilee, what would be known as the Golan Heights, and the day is winding down for her there, but this morning, she sent us this video, and I wanna play this video for you. It's just an update about where she is and what's going on. So, that's Susan We must resist the short attention span that I want to blame our current insatiable appetite for stimulation as giving us a diminished attention span. For how many people is this already out of their in their mind or in their heart, out of their news cycle? For how many people are like, oh, yeah.
I heard about that. For how many people they would say, oh, we're still doing that? Lord, deliver us from a short attention span. We'll talk a little bit more about this as and we're gonna read verses one through six. And while you are turning there, will somebody who would like to read that?
As Lisa has already stated, I really do want this to be less of a monologue and more of a dialogue. I want this to be a conversation that we have together. When when's the last time you were at at church in a saloon? When's the last time you were in a saloon? Probably some of you, you visit saloons more than you do at church, but you're here.
So that's all that matters. God's like, I'll take it. I'll take it. And you're like, I thought I was coming to church. I didn't know I was coming to a cancer center, but this is a a a cancer healing center.
It was formerly a saloon. Now it's a place of holy habitation where the spirit of the lord lives and dwells among his people. And with that, I really want this to be, as Lisa has already said, I want it to be a conversation. So if you have questions, comments, or connections, I'd love to hear from you. And even though this venue is bigger than the TMC where we meet on Tuesdays, the reason why we pass around the mic is so that all of our families and people that watch the live stream all around the world can get to get to be a part, and they get to hear.
Because if you just speak up, but this mic doesn't pick you up, then they miss out. But when you use the mic, then everybody gets to hear, okay? With that in mind, Exodus chapter three, would somebody please read verses one through six?

I guess it's now two weeks ago that we spent some time honoring the god's family tradition of the feast of Sukkot or the feast of taking a week and living intents would be how we would say that today. And there are seven different traditions that God has as a part of his family. If you're in God's family or if you are near God's family or if you're around God's family at all, there are seven things that he loves to do as annual traditions and we talked several weeks ago about different traditions that you might have in your family. Well, in god's family, there are seven traditions that he likes to have and god knows us and he said, when you celebrate these traditions that I have, I want you to I want you to enjoy yourself. I want you to to take these things seriously.
I want there to be a deeper connection to them and the most recent family tradition that he's invited everybody to be a part of is the feast of Sukkot, the feast of Boots, or the feast of take a week and go camping. And and as a tribe family, we celebrated that last week. It ended last week just as things in Israel were were beginning to to flare up and last week with Steve, the this message has had an opportunity to, like, stew in the juices, and so, like, he's like, no, no, no. Because so and so is not here last week, but they're here this week, let's go ahead and do that this week. So, we just trust the Lord for his timing with these things.
And what I wanted to the main point that I wanted to share with you in our conversation today is that as we came out of Sukkot, there were a number of us that went down and camped. We said, hey. We're gonna camp there were a number of us that went down and camped. We said, hey. We're gonna camp out about down in Little Granite Creek Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.
Down in Little Granite Creek, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. And Clay was amazing. He was down there and all set up, like like, Wednesday by, I don't know, 10AM or or something. He was already, like, sizzling up eggs and sausage and, you know, I had his little knife and his little campfire and, like, whoo. Mean, this guy was, like, succot to the max, like, right he he was there.
And it was great to see others of you that got to come down and join us in the evening. And then Friday, we did a big bonfire, and there were, what, almost 50 people? 40? Yeah. Almost 50 people that came down, got to be a part of our our big feast that we had on Friday, and it was wonderful and great.
And as we broke camp on Saturday and I got back to the house and unpacking stuff and doing laundry, I was thinking about, man, it was great. I mean, it was inconvenient to get down there but it was great but then my thought was like, man, it was just so inconvenient to get down there And I found myself thinking like, Lord, I love that family tradition, and I love camping, but I'm kinda glad we're only doing that tradition like once a year because, man, it was just so inconvenient. I had so many things to do up here during the week, and I'm sure that all the the rest of you had all kinds of things. You had meetings. You had work.
You had volleyball practice. You had scouts. You had this. You had that. You had to get them, you had four h meetings, your work went late, and oh my gosh, it's forty minutes all the way down there to, like, hang out or you live over the hill or or you're coming from Colorado Hill.
It's it's very challenging when you live in Colorado. I mean, you made it here today. Hillary's with us today. Hill, we love seeing you. But, man, it was in let's just be honest.
It was inconvenient to get to get down there. It was worth it, but it was in it was inconvenient. And the conversation that I wanna have with us this morning, if you're taking notes, you can write the title of this morning's conversation. The title of this morning's conversation is encounter in the inconvenience. Encounter in the inconvenience.
We live our lives trying to maximize convenience. If we can save time by texting while we're driving, it's convenient. If we can, like, like, multitask, if we can have devices that that create ease for our life, we try to utilize those things to the fullest because life is so several several of those evenings. The evenings were just great. The the rain would clear out.
But there's something inconvenient about leaving your house and going to sit in a shelter or a booth. There's something inconvenient about going down to to Granite Creek. And in a similar way, let's look at the story that we just read and consider the inconvenience that Moses was faced with. Here he is as a shepherd in the backside of the desert. He's got one responsibility.
Don't let the sheep die. He just has to keep an eye on the sheep. And in the midst of him going about his normal life, there was an inconvenience that popped up. And I really love Gracie. Gracie.
Gracie, I love that you're here and that you read today. Gracie's back with us. She was with us. She was one of our, I just call them affectionately little noonies. She was one of our little noonies that was here last winter and she's back and just visiting just visiting.
But you weren't you weren't German goat milking, were you? You were you were in the desert, in Utah this summer. Right. Right. Right.
Okay. Alright. So I'm glad that that you were here, and I'm glad that you're here this morning. And as she read, I love the translation that she read from because I want I want us to get this picture in our mind. Here's Moses going on about his day doing his Moses shepherd thing and all of a sudden, he sees a burning bush off in the distance.
We're not told how far away it was. We're not told was it up on a mountainside? Did he have to hike up a long way? Was it down maybe in like like a little canyon or they would call him a wadi, like a little a little drainage ditch? Was it did it like pop up right next to him?
All we know is that Moses, his eye was caught by a burning bush. And when his eye was caught by that burning bush, there was a fork in the road that happened for Moses. Moses had the option to be like, oh, look, a burning bush and continue on his way. Moses also had the option to say, oh, look, a burning bush. I will what was the phrase that was read from this translation?
Two words, turn aside. Moses had to activate his chooser. It wasn't right there in front of him in the middle of his path where he he where he had no opportunity to to get around it. He had every opportunity to just dismiss the inconvenience. But Moses said, I will turn aside and see.
It's only in that inconvenience of Moses that he turned aside that he encountered the lord. How many of us have burning bush opportunities every single day that we dismiss as only an inconvenience? As the lord put as I was thinking about like unpacking and and washing, it was an inconvenience to go down there but man, those few days that we got to spend whether we were we were awoken at 5AM with clay just chopping wood, which was a real blessing for us. At 5AM or it was in the evening times when we got to gather around the campfire and or caveman drummer came down and we had like worship circles and like, oh, just the the wonderful time. It was inconvenient but man, did we encounter the lord those evenings and especially on Friday, on Friday night but as I was unpacking and drying out my gear, I was like, man, couldn't it just be like a little more convenient and the lord just began to whisper to my heart and he says, I love inconvenience.
I love inconvenience. God loves God, he really does. He really, he really does and and I thank you for reminding me of that. With the chopping of wood at 5AM. Smell of salsa
genetics is much more than 5AM.
Yeah. It that it it did kind of lure us out of our our caves and and and holes. But I was asking the lord, like, like, why is it that with you when it was convenient? Like, that's how I would prefer to encounter you. On my time, not at like 5AM, but maybe like at 7AM.
I'd I I would prefer that. It's inconvenient at 5AM. Why, lord? Why do you why do you why do you do this? And I just felt like the the lord whispered to my heart and he says, I love to surprise my children in the midst of inconvenience.
It's in the midst of that inconvenience that I've placed this surprise of encounter with my heart. There's a there's a verse that says in the Valley Of Achor, it means weeping hardship and sorrow. There's placed a a spring of hope. In the Valley Of Achor, there is a door. There is an place of access to encounter with him that we wouldn't other when it's convenient for us and he he draws close to our heart.
Yep, yep, yep, yep, yep. He can do that and he loves to do that but there's something unique and special about encountering the lord in the midst of inconvenience? Probably because we're more likely to just skip right over it because and we're grumbling, we're grousing, we're we're you're we're fussing with, like, oh, I've got this in life. I've got that, like, to to to to deal with and to to wrestle with. There we are.
It's not a burning bush. It's just a glorious campfire. And we have we have the greatest opportunity to miss him. How many of you remember that story of Jesus walking on water? And it's mentioned in several of gospels but in one of the gospels, there's one unique detail.
Can anybody remember that unique detail about Jesus walking on the water? The disciples are freaking out. It's a ghost. It's like, I don't know. It's Legolas.
Like, I don't know what's happening. What's going on? But there's one detail that was for you, Mary. There's one detail in one of the gospels that says, what about Jesus? He was gonna walk right on past.
It says, and Jesus intended to walk past and look for me and it was Peter that was like, and only then did Jesus say, like, it's okay. It's just me and in the midst of that inconvenience, Peter says, Lord, if it's me, bid me come out to you onto the water. And in the Texas translation, Jesus said, y'all come. In the midst of that inconvenience was an encounter that was there waiting because god loves to surprise his children. The angel visiting Mary was about to hand her a big old inconvenience.
Blessed are you above women because your whole life is about to be turned upside down. Man, it was a real inconvenience for Lazarus's sisters to have Lazarus die. I mean, not to mention the inconvenience that it was for Lazarus. But in the midst of that inconvenience was an opportunity for encounter. Encounter unlike that could have happened if there hadn't been that inconvenience.
What about the inconvenience for Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego? It was only there that they found the fourth man in the fire. Okay. Now, it's your turn. Help me preach this message.

Like everybody in life, you have your list of to dos that goes on and on and on. And in the very beginning, he'll say, come

It was inconvenient where he was. He is the he was the only disciple to survive martyrdom. They tried to poison him. They tried to boil him alive. All he wanted to do was be with the the churches that he helped found and established.
He's in the the the that part of his life, and then he's out on the Island Of Patmos and he says, I was in the spirit on the lord's day in the midst of isolation, incarceration, exile. I was just in the spirit on the lord's feet. The the revelation from Jesus. But how many of us want the isolation, the abandonment, and the rejection? It's inconvenient to be on the Island Of Patmos.
One of my favorites is when Peter is called and Jesus comes to him in the boat and he says, throw your nets on the other side after he spent the whole night toiling and fishing and knows better but is inconvenienced by that. But yet, at God's word, he did it.
Nevertheless, Lord, at your will, I'll throw down my nets on the other side. That was super inconvenient. They were already done fishing.
I think of Job and how, like, his family was taken from him, his house. He was, like, sick, like, just everything isolated. He was losing his mind. And like I just Job was this Job was the story that I kept reading. Like when I first became a Christian, it was just like I could like relate to like
But you also like country western music too. Like, country western music book a joke go hand in they go hand in hand. Yeah. How easy they're, George Strait.
But, yeah, like, kinda recently, like, I heard someone speak a couple of weeks ago and what stood out to me, She had a lot of great stuff to say but that there's purpose in the pain and so that god can use whatever is happening in our life even if he didn't cause it but he can use it for the good and so, just kind of think that was with that. I
think sometimes he causes an inconvenience to slow us down because we get so busy in everything that he throws a little wrench in there sometimes to say stop. And it's an inconvenience, but we maybe have time to communicate with him.
In the in the Old Testament, God describes Israel and Jerusalem as a stumbling block. I've put a stumbling block of Israel. It's the the land and the people of covenant also are quite a controversy. And right now the nation of Israel and the people of Israel are like a cannot get around Israel. What will you do with Israel?
And there are two choices. You can fall on the rock and be broken and you can have the Lord conform your worldview to the biblical narrative of Israel and his eternal covenant with the city of the great king or that stumbling block will become for you the of charge.

I the story that comes to mind for me is the story of the bleeding woman who it was not convenient for her to go and be in the middle of a crowd of people who didn't probably care for her very much and were suspicious of her and to just touch the hem of Jesus's cloak and like also wasn't convenient for him to stop in that moment and be with

I I think I saw your little wheels turning about a story.
I'll I'll Let me
show something. We had an aside conversation. I know we were gonna say something. One that always comes to me is the inconvenience of just other people because I used I used to not be about hosting or letting people in an x y z or having my door open for people to just come into my home. And I read the story then of Rahab and Lydia and how they let two spies come in and how that was a big inconvenience because they're going against their people.
They easily could have gotten killed. But that generosity of them like, no, coming to our homes, that was one of the first places for the church and Philippi was able to start meeting. And because of their inconvenience than a church born and like the gospel to be spread and just thinking about that inconvenience of people and how we can like switch our mindset and then like now your place of home and invited people in to be a place where people come get loved and filled up.
Encounter and inconvenience. Whether it's Job and what he suffered or what Lydia, like, opened herself up to. I love what it says at the very end of Job. I've heard all about you, but now I've seen you with my own eyes and I sit in ashes. Meaning, the encounter that I had with you was so real and so profound.
It puts all of those other things into perspective. Oh, wow. I've had this I've heard second, third hand about you, but now I had this firsthand encounter with you. He says that at the very end of Job. And Lydia, what she did to by just the simple act of obedience in the midst of that inconvenience opened up the gospel for a witness of the gospel to be established in that new place.
These examples are so great.
Okay. So I was sitting here and I was like, just you said the word inconvenience and the first thing that came to my mind for some reason was giving is inconvenient for a lot of us. And the Lord the Lord put on my heart like just my parents growing up sponsored four children in other countries for each of my siblings and I. And so I had this thought of, oh, I should sponsor a kid. Out of nowhere I was just sitting here like googling kids and it's just like, like not googling kids but like looking at compassion's website of like sponsoring a child.
Hey, we have two children that you could sponsor. We'll we'll put their picture up really quick. They're in college, so it's kind of expensive. But we are yeah. So if you'd leave that picture up because I do wanna mention the middle person in that picture.

Yep. When she was saying that, I thought about the rich young ruler. Give give that, but he got no encounter. He didn't wanna he didn't wanna go with the inconvenience. Yeah.
You know?
He missed it.
He missed it. Then the friends lowering their paralyzed friend through the roof. That's pretty inconvenient. Saul losing his eyesight for his Paul. That was pretty inconvenient.
And then COVID was pretty inconvenient. But I think that our church meeting at home and you had a lot of big encounters through a huge inconvenience in the way that tribe is today.
Pregnant's so so good. I love I love the the the the stories here, and we could go on and on and on. Isn't that perhaps maybe a a a theme of the bible that's so macro that we tend to overlook it? It impacts us on a deeply intimate and personal level, but this reoccurring theme of one of the ways in which god acts is so macro throughout scripture that that we tend to miss it on the micro level of our everyday lives. That there is an opportunity for encounter right in the midst of inconvenience.
This is a picture of my daughter, Selah, on the left, my son, Kai, on the far right. I think this trip was the last trip I saw that my favorite steel jacket. So it's inconvenient. What? But right in the middle there, this is a girl named Gili.
Gili, her last name is Gurman. And she this is a picture taken in Northern Israel, the Golan Heights. And that picture is looking across the Jordan Valley and into the country of Jordan right there in the in the blurred out background. Selah and Gilly are just about the same well, I think Gilly's right in the in the age in between Kai and Selah. Kai was in high school.
Selah was about to graduate. Since this photo, when we were in Israel together, Gilead's graduated high school. She's gone into the army. It is compulsory, not voluntary. So after you graduate high school, you get to spend two years serving in the IDF, Israeli Defense Force.
And Gilead had just finished essentially, like, basic training or or boot camp. Like and and things started, the the war in Israel started, and they sent Gilly home, so she has got to be with her family. I showed this picture last week, but I'll I'll just show you again a picture of her beautiful family. The rest of the Girmans, it's one of those other photos there. And Gilly has several siblings.
So when I think of I I don't know who you think of when you think of of Israel, but I think of the Gurman family. Jacob and Sherry, their youngest son who's squeezed in down there, his name is Joab. Rabbi in the blue shirt. Yeah. The rabbi, cult leader.
I don't know. It could go it go either way. And then Jacob there. And what was what's the middle daughter's Shamila? Yeah.
Yeah. Yeah. I oh gosh. I can't it's blinking my mind right now. But we're in Beth Sheyenne right there in this picture, and so in the so please be pray if you're like, I wanna pray for Israel, and I wanna like, but who you have a face of of Susan, and now you have another family like a a face as you pray for Israel.
But I wrote this down in my in my notes. God like to encounter us in the midst of inconvenience. And I wrote just a a couple of things down. Number one, he's looking for hunger. In the same way that Moses turned aside as we read.
Who of you in the midst of inconvenience will turn aside? And lean into the potential to encounter the lord. Why does he do this? Number one, he's looking for hunger. Do we take inconvenience and do we just like kick dust at it like an umpire like in a baseball game like, when the coach comes out and, like, he's displeased with a call that the umpire makes, so he, like, kicks dust at it.
Like, do you do you grumble? Do you complain? Do you grouse? Do you plug your ears?
Do you go la la la?
Do you put your head down and try to just force your way through this inconvenience and miss kind of like like you said there hunger. He's looking for hunger, number one. Number two, he's looking to see if we'll pay the price. Will we pay the price to set down our schedule? Will we pay the price to allow ourselves to lean into this inconvenience for the sake of encountering god?
And then number three, the reason why he loves to encounter us in the midst of inconvenience because when we do turn aside and we do encounter him, it's unmistakable that god gets all of the credit and all of the glory because what was our our modus operandi was plowed through. We weren't heading into those circumstances thinking like, wow, I'm really looking to like make the name of Jesus famous in this. Let's be honest. We are bummed out. We are disgruntled.
We're dissatisfied. We are discouraged. That's like our default when we step into these moments of inconvenience. But when we encounter the lord, we're like, oh, it's you and it's not of us and it's wholly different than us and it's so easy to see the contrast in those moments of our path, our course, our trajectory, and then for god to arrest us. Whether it's Job or Lydia or I love the the opposite example that you not encountering the lord.
He was right there. He even said, I'll follow you but the subtext was, if it's convenient. He's looking for hunger. He's looking to see if we'll pay the price. And when we do encounter him, because of the contrast, he gets all of the credit and all of the glory.
Now, I wanna land the plane with this because we walk a fine line of just positive philosophical talk. If Okay. Let me just let me stick to your notes, Brian. How do we tell if this is a God ordained inconvenience? Because there are some bad things that that that happened that absolutely do not have god's fingerprints on them at all.
For example, what Clay is walking through. God did not give Clay cancer. He didn't put that there. Oh, so that Clay will turn to me, right? We gotta get that super abundantly crystal clear.
God did not give Clay cancer. God did not give you that horrible abuse situation that you suffered as a child so that you could encounter the lord in the midst of this that that we gotta distinguish and differentiate between those. So how do we tell? How can we tell if the inconvenience is of the lord? Two verses I wanna share with you as we land the plane.
And let's turn to these because they're so good. They're near the middle of your bible. Let's turn to the book of Song of Solomon. One of two passages from the Song of Solomon. How can we tell if this inconvenience, if we stop long enough to consider it, how can we tell that this could be of the lord?
Some inconveniences are just tourists that are coming through our city in July, and there is nothing spiritual about it. It's just a million people trying to drive through a town that was planned for 15,000.
Or 6,000.
Or six yeah. 6,000. I was being generous. I started counting the population when we got here. Song of Solomon chapter five.
Look at verse two and three. So there are several main characters in the book, the Song of Solomon. And it's a beautiful the the book is designed, intended to be read as an allegory, not just between a young man and a young woman, but as an allegory between Jesus and a young woman, the the the one whom he pursues, the one whom he loves, and the young woman is madly in love with this young man and it is a picture of Jesus pursuing us and the journey of our heart falling in love with him and in this passage in Song of Solomon chapter five verse two and three, the young woman is speaking and she says, I slept but my heart was awake. When I heard my lover knocking and calling, open to me, my treasure, my darling, my dove, my perfect one. And then he goes on to say, my head is drenched with dew in my head and the dampness of the night.
But I responded, I've taken off my robe. Should I get dressed again? I have washed my feet. Should I get them soil? And in this moment, the lover of her soul comes and knocks at the door of her heart.
When? At an inconvenient hour. She's already washed her feet. She's got her jammies on. She's gotten into bed, and here comes the knock.
When it is inconvenient, I have my life planned out. I've got my to do list perfectly well planned. I've gone through my rhythm and my routine. And Jesus says, I know. I've been in the garden praying.
My head is drenched with the dew of night. And in the midst of that place of the young man would say intimacy with the father would long to bring in the young woman, the beloved. Oh, how I want to be with you, and I want to draw close to you, and I want us to have a special tender moment. And he says, but she's already got her jammies on. She's taken up her taken off her makeup for the day popped out, and she's got her thick Coke bottle glasses And the Lord knocks.
So what happens? What happens? What does she do? You're gonna have to read for yourself. But I want us to turn to one more place, one more place.
Song of Solomon chapter three verse four. There's a beautiful interaction that that that's ongoing as a theme throughout Song of Solomon where he draws close. She has the opportunity to to lean in. She has the opportunity to to to to push it away. But, oh, when she sets her heart on pursuing the lord.
Oh, beloved. Beloved. Listen to what happens in Song of Solomon chapter three verse four. Then scarcely had I left him and she's asking around the town, where has my lover gone? Have you seen him?
Where can I go to meet up with him? It I held him tightly. Then I brought him into my mother's house and into my mother's bed where I had been conceived, and that's poetic language speaking of the deep place of intimacy.
When she
allows for encounter, right, in the midst of inconvenience, there is an opportunity for deep, transformative encounter. And that gonna
We're to
to with Israel, where we stand, or or or sticking with our daily bible reading plan. It's great. It's great. But if it's lacking deep transformative encounter, it will be of increasing non nutritive value to us. And as we move with the days ahead, we have to we have to allow inconvenience into our life for the sake of encountering him.
Did I say out loud there were only two more places that we were gonna go? Okay. I get a bonus extra one. And you don't even have to turn there if you don't want to, but it's in Luke chapter five. I I I wrote this.
I wanna tie a bow on all that we've been talking about, where we've been going. This idea of of new new wines get to be saying about it, in in service. In Luke chapter five, starting in verse 33, one day some disciples said to Jesus, John the Baptist's disciples fast and pray regularly, and so did the disciples of the Pharisees. Why are your disciples always eating and drinking? Jesus responded, do wedding guests fast while celebrating with the groom?
Of course, no. But someday, the groom will be taken from them and then they will fast. Then Jesus gave them this illustration. No one tears a piece of cloth from a new garment and uses it to patch an old garment. For when the new garment, for then the new garment would be ruined and the new patch wouldn't even match the old garment.
And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. For the new wine would burst the wineskins, spilling the wine and ruining the wineskins. New wine must be stored in new wineskins. But look at this verse that just screams inconvenience. But no one who drinks the old wine seems to want the inconvenience of new wine.
They say, I would rather dodge inconvenience. I would rather not be inconvenienced, and I'll just drink the old wine. It's good enough. How do you tell if these inconvenience are opportunities for encounters? I would just say this to you.
It will have the fragrance of heaven on it. Opportunities for encounter in the midst of inconvenience will have the fragrance of heaven on it. And you gotta unpack that. Not gonna baby bird it, feed it to you. You've gotta unpack that.
What does that even mean? The fragrance of heaven on a situation. You've got it undiagnosed. Jesus, may we be people that are always sniffing for that encounter even in the midst of inconvenience. May we have our nose in the air sniffing for the fragrance of heaven so that even if it's inconvenient circumstances, we can set our hearts.
We can purpose our hearts for encountering you. Oh, there's gonna be an encounter here In the mid, I just sense the fragrance of heaven. Even if we're in our jammies and we got our glasses on for the night. Would you take a moment and do a little bit of business with the lord? Maybe you find yourself right now in the midst of some inconvenient circumstances.
Not what you had planned, wasn't on your day timer, but you have been trying to avoid or dodge or just quickly get through these circumstances. But maybe the Lord's like, oh, beloved, this is this you have an opportunity to encounter me the midst of of these circumstances. And these circumstances actually reek with the fragrance of heaven, but you haven't been sniffing. Jesus, would you release the fragrance of heaven over their circumstance? And you have been trying to plow your way through without taking the time to sniff around for the fragrance of heaven for that and and thus far thus far, you've missed encounter, but you're like, oh, this just slip your hand up because I I wanna I I wanna
Jesus.
Would you just take that little no. Jesus, would you just take that little, like, old school perfume and just of the fragrance of heaven on the circumstances that people raise their hand in. The car trouble, that's kind of like an inconvenient circumstance. So I'll see that hand. Would you just some heaven fragrance of heaven on that circumstance that they would have the attitude of Moses to terrace.
Couple minutes more. Just kind of the maybe it's just me, but I think I I sense this in the room. I mean, with everything that's going on in Israel and just all we talked about today, just heavy stuff that, like, our tribe family's going through. Clay mentioned it, but just getting back to the simplicity and truth of the gospel. Jesus is enough.
It's him. He's enough. He can handle it. Right? So we might feel inconvenience with things.
We might feel broken. We might feel crushed. We might feel like it's hard to function because of what's going on globally and or in our own lives. Jesus is enough. Read his word.
Get back to listen to worship. Get back to basics. If that's I mean, it's wonderful to talk and and debate and have theology and just go deep. That's wonderful. But if you're feeling overwhelmed, just read his word.
Turn on some worship. Talk to a trusted friend. Like, get back to that simplicity because Jesus is enough. It's so simple, but it's so profoundly powerful. So as we we'll do
to
the
finances to the Lord. Lord doesn't And make sense to a lot of people, and man, it's especially inconvenient when the holy spirit kind of nudges you to go above and beyond and give a gift that feels like you don't have to give. But, man, God honors obedience. So as if you're giving now or if your rhythm is something different, that's fine. We're gonna pray over it.
And just practically speaking, we don't pass buckets, but if you have something tangible like a cash or check, we have a little box over there at the door as you leave the swinging doors of the saloon. We also, it's most convenient to get on your phone, which you can see on on the screen behind you in front of you, behind me. You just give a number. You text to 84321 like you're texting a friend. Thank you that when you disrupt our lives or when we run into inconvenience, you also promise to never leave us or forsake us no matter how we feel. We know the truth in your word and quick things to say before we get out of here. You guys have heard us talk about foundations for nations. It's where Elisha is living and serving and it's a ministry just a few hours northeast of here. The Wind River Reservation and we've gone up there several times.
It's where traffic is. We have an opportunity to go celebrate with them. What are what are they calling that building? Grand opening of the Brexit Building. It's a huge building.
It's a grand opening happening this month at the end of the month, October 28, and we are just gonna celebrate with them the months and months and months of work that they have poured in. We've gone down there, some of us, and used our our hands and our own blood, sweat, and tears to, help open this building, and it is just going to be profound for their community. And so and just talk about bringing people to the Lord. This is a it's an opening, a grand opening of a building, but we wanna go and celebrate with them what it what's to come and just pray over it and what the Lord wants to use that for. I just felt like it as we wrap it up a little bit for me, what I'm gonna leave with was the potential to to see the encounter. I think that's what helps it practically is when you keep the end in mind because the inconvenience can just stop there. Yeah. But if if you just ask the holy spirit, can you give me the eyes to see the potential of the of the inconvenience, the potential of that encounter? Like, what what's the potential out there?
When you keep that, it's like a mindset shift that when the inconvenience happens or you have an opportunity to inconvenience yourself, think of the potential, keep that end in mind, and that allows you to go through the inconvenience. And that's kind of the fragrance for me. It's just that's practically speaking, I'm just leaving today. That's all I just wanted to say.

Yes. Lord Jesus, we just ask your peace, your peace, your peace over Chris and Keisha. Oh, we love single detail, Lord, that your peace would be in it. We thank you for this beautiful baby boy or girl. We're so excited for them.
Go before them like we know you are and send your peace. And we pray for every single moment after that, that your grace and your mercy would just abound as they become new parents tomorrow morning.

Just feel like the when I was, like, feeling fatherly to pray over all of you, the Lord highlighted you, Trinity, and he said, I just take such great delight in your inner beauty and your outward beauty that the the Bible says, with one glance of your eye, you have ravished my heart, my beautiful wine, and my bride. And the Lord takes great delight in your inner beauty and your outward beauty and your picture in every person here at tribe today.
