Hang Your Hat on God's Truth

A study guide · June 16, 2024

Watch or read it

In one paragraph

Brian started with a hat rack as a visual and built the whole message around one question: whatever you believe about any subject, is the hook you are hanging that belief on strong enough to bear its weight? The conversation drew from Isaiah 22 and Ezekiel 15, with the congregation asking questions and responding throughout. The core claim was that any belief not anchored in the objective truth of...

Read together

  1. Isaiah 22:22-24 read aloud to introduce the nail-in-the-wall and key-of-David imagery for the hat-rack analogy
  2. Isaiah 22:25 read to show the nail being pulled out, acknowledged as breaking down the analogy
  3. Revelation 3:8 cited to prove Jesus is the greater key-holder of David, fulfilling the Isaiah passage
  4. John 14:6 congregation member quoted it to connect Jesus as the door and the truth
  5. Ezekiel 15:1-5 read aloud to illustrate Israel as a weak grapevine unable to bear the weight of responsibility
  6. Psalm 119 referenced for the verse about God's word being a lamp to my feet and a light to my path
  7. Proverbs 3:5 cited as a caution against leaning on your own understanding
  8. Philippians 4:6 cited as worry about nothing, pray about everything, with the peace of God following
  9. Romans 12:1-2 cited against conforming to the world and for renewing the mind
  10. Psalm 139:23-24 congregation member read it as a prayer asking God to search for any grievous way
  11. 1 John 2:15 congregation member offered it as a contrast, warning against loving the world over the Father

Talk about it

  1. Brian used the image of a hat rack to talk about where we hang our beliefs. What is a belief you hold that you have never really stopped to ask yourself why you believe it, or where you first picked it up?
  2. Brian described the principle of the biggest hook, the idea that we often land on a belief simply because it is what everyone around us believes, or what is being pushed loudest. Can you think of a time that happened to you, and what did it take to question it?
  3. Brian said that any belief we hold that does not conform to the reality of God's truth disconnects us from the fabric of God's created order. What does that disconnection actually look like in a person's life, in your experience?
  4. When someone asked how you know which hook to hang a belief on in everyday decisions, Brian pointed to three things: God's word, wise counsel, and the peace of the Holy Spirit. Which of those three do you lean on most, and which one do you tend to skip?
  5. Kate read Psalm 139 verses 23 and 24, the prayer asking God to search us and show us any grievous way in us. If you prayed that prayer honestly this week, what hook do you think God might point to and ask you about?
