Well, here we are back at the bar. What could the lord be up to with our tribe family and having us be so nimble when it comes to where we meet. What could he be up to? Tribe will be celebrating its eighth birthday in October. The last week of October will be Tribe's eighth birthday. We've been here for we've been here as a church for eight years. Lissa and I that's Trinity, not Lissa. Lissa and I have been in this valley for over twenty years. We've been leading and loving, shepherding the people of this valley for two decades in one capacity or another. And here we are, a tribe, and we've met at Shepherd of the Mountains Lutheran Church. We've met at Snow King Conference Center. We've met in homes. We've met online. We've met, at the park at the base of Snow King. We have met at Philbo Park. We have met at Powderhorn Park. We've been for two years at the TMC, the tribe ministry center. So we've been we have been bumped and moved around a lot. And I think one of the takeaways for our tribe family, and it doesn't matter if you have been here on this journey with us for eight full years, or if you're brand new this morning, like Olive Garden, if you're here, your family. So you've been on this journey with us even if it's your first step on the journey. I think one of the things that the lord is doing with our unique church family is disrupting the rut of the notion that a church is a location. Because if a church is a location, then we haven't been a church for very long in any one place. The church is actually the community of people that god brings to a unique expression of his local church. And Paul describes the local church as a body made up of spleens and kidneys and eyeballs and elbows. And so I think what's the takeaway for for us this morning is that as we continue with service, just look around. We'll take a moment right now and look around. All these different people here hello. Hello. All the introverts are cringing right now. Please just leave me alone. Introverts and extroverts alike, we are the church. The church is not where we meet. And like Lissa said at worship this morning, there's never been quite this unique collection and gathering of people to lift up our voices in song and worship the lord through song, through honoring his word that is preaching. Later, you'll have an opportunity to worship the lord through your tithes and offerings. But I just I I think that the lord wants to remind us that that we are the church. So when we are dismissed with service today, take a moment longer to, like, shake somebody's hand. Take a moment longer to give somebody a hug. Take a moment longer to introduce yourself to somebody. Because how much of a part of a family are you if you just come in, sit there, do your thing, and then just leave without interacting with the rest of the family members? This is in terms of a restaurant. This is not a restaurant. Excuse me. This is a family dining table. A restaurant, you come in, you wait to be seated, you don't get to pick where you sit, you a hostess seats you, you're handed a menu, you get to just pick and choose from the menu, I'd like this, but hold this and, oh, make sure it's gluten free, And can you toast this a little you know, whatever your order is. And a server gets your order and they bring you your food. When you are done, what do you do with your plates? Leave it. Now, I mean, that's great when you go out for a restaurant. But can you imagine, like, sitting down at a dining room table and being like, where's the menu? I mean, that's a good way to, like, get a whipping. And then the the the food is served by mom or dad, whoever prepared it. And then at the end of the meal, you pick your plate up. You scrape your plate in the trash, and you put your plate in the sink or even rinse it and put it all the way in the dishwasher. Right? There is some parents are like, I'm working on it. I'm working on it. Hang in there. Lissa almost has me trained. But I want us to think of this time that we are together less like a restaurant where you have a consumer mentality. Oh, that just makes me sick. And more of a collaborative family environment where we can be together, where where I contribute something to your life, and all of you are contributing something to my life, and you're contributing something to each other's lives. And how can that happen if you just come in, sit down, stand up, and then just leave? I think I've made my point. Right? Let's be a family together. With all of that said, if you have your Bible with you this morning, would you turn to Genesis chapter 45? Genesis 45. We were in Genesis last week and there's just more to get out of this big story arc that Lisa and I have been reading through. There I am. Genesis chapter 45. We have a wireless handheld mic in the room, and one of the things that we like to do here at Tribe is we like to read god's word together, not all, like, syncopated at the same time. That's way too liturgical. But we we pass the mic around when it's time to read god's word, and you can we have a short amount of verses to read this morning. So maybe just one person, if you would read verses one through eight. Genesis chapter 45. And Kat has the mic in the room, and so you can just get her attention. Leah, I knew it. Was looking at you. Thanks, Leah. Leah, where's your grandmother's bible today? Oh, great. It's a phone. Oh, it's a okay. Alright. Alright. Well You go so fast that I can't flip the pages. This is only the second time I've ever brought my phone. I know. And here I am calling you out in front of the whole class. Sorry. I just I just love I I don't I really don't know the story behind anybody else's bible. I just happen to know the story behind your bible. And so I love it, but please continue from your electronic bible. One through eight? One through eight. And not a verse further. Then Joseph could no longer control himself before all his attendants and he cried out, have everyone leave my presence. So there was no one with Joseph when he made himself known to his brothers. And he wept so loudly that the Egyptians heard him and Pharaoh's household heard about it. Joseph said to his brothers, I am Joseph. Is my father still living? But his brothers were not able to answer him because they were terrified at his presence. Then Joseph said to his brothers, come close to me. When they had done so, he said, I am your brother Joseph, the one you sold into Egypt. And now do not be distressed and do not be angry with yourselves for selling me here because it was to save lives that god sent me ahead of you. For two years now, there has been famine in the land, and for the next five years, there will be no plowing and reaping. But god sent me ahead of you to preserve to, yeah, preserve for you a remnant on earth and to save your lives by a great deliverance. So then, it was not you who sent me here but god. He made me father to pharaoh, lord of his entire household, and ruler of all Egypt. Wow. You can answer honestly for anybody in here. Is this the first time that you're hearing this part of the story? I'm always curious. Okay. Super cool. Let me give you a little bit of of background. So there's this guy named Joseph. He is second youngest brother, to 11 siblings. Their dad is this guy named Jacob, and Joseph happened to be really special in the heart of his father, Jacob. And he gave him special honor and special treatment that only aroused the envy and the jealousy of his other brothers. So one day, Jacob sends his son, Joseph. Where are those knucklehead brothers of yours? They've been out grazing sheep. I haven't seen them in a long time. Go track them down and find them. So Joseph's like, aye aye. And he sets off to go find his 11 brothers, and he's trotting off through the hills. And as he comes to one town, he says, hey. Have you seen my brothers? And a person in that town is like, I haven't seen them. They're not here. They've gone on to another place. Alright. So Joseph goes on. He then finds the pasture land where his brothers and his father's flocks are being kept. Then the bible says that while Joseph was still a long way off, his 11 brothers say, oh, here comes this dreamer. Here comes this golden child. Here comes the fancy boy. Here he comes. We should we should really, as all good brothers, think to themselves, we should really teach him a lesson. But they had violence in their heart towards their youngest brother. Second youngest. So one of them always going too far is like, let's kill him. And the oldest brother's like, no. No. No. We're not gonna kill him. How about we just throw him in a pit? Oh, okay. That's that's a good idea. So they throw him in a pit. While they're trying to decide what to do with him, there was a caravan of traders going from north to south down to the land of Egypt. And one of the brothers, being very business minded, was like, hey. Here's an opportunity to make some money off of our second youngest brother. And currently, he's the youngest brother, but then another younger brother comes along, Benjamin, just for the those of you who are keeping score. So they sell Joseph to these this caravan of traders heading down to Egypt. And they're like, alright. Done. They fabricate a story to tell their father. Their father's heartbroken. He's he's just devastated. Meanwhile, god is at work in Joseph's life. The time span between what what I just told you and where we read the story is about twenty two years. Twenty two years later, they're two years into a great famine. And the brothers are running out of food, so the father Jacob sends the brothers down to Egypt because they have heard that there is a great amount of, stock supply. What's the word I'm looking for? Stockpile. Thank you. See? We're in this together. A stockpile and a surplus of grain and food. So, like, we'll go down and go down to Egypt, buy some food. So they go down to Egypt. Joseph, over the course of these twenty two years, has gone from a slave all the way up to pharaoh's number two man and is in charge of all of Egypt. How does he go from slave to pharaoh's number two? By the grace of god. The Bible says that God was with Joseph, and he showed him his faithful, loving kindness. And what's that word in Hebrew, Chris? Hasid. His faithful, loving kindness. God was with Joseph. Twenty two years later, Joseph is in a position of supreme authority and power, and in come one day, his 11 knucklehead brothers trying to buy grain. Then the story turns a couple of plot twists like in an exciting movie, similar to the classic novel, the count of Monte Cristo, where there's a reversal and and the they don't know who he is, but he is he is, or or maybe even, Homer's odyssey. You know? Like, it in a it's a great classic plot twist where the brothers thought one thing, but now the tables have turned, and Joseph is in a position of power. And through a couple of interesting twists and turns, the brothers find themselves back in Egypt a second time, buying grain. And this is when, as this we have just read, Joseph can take it no longer. And off comes the mask, and he reveals himself to his brothers. Today, I'd like us to have for just a few minutes a conversation about this I this story that we just read, this part of the story about Joseph. And I did say conversation because I would like to hear from you. Instead of just me talking and trying not to cough, I'd love to hear from you, your thoughts, your comments, your questions, and your connections that you're making. We're gonna make a lot of connections today. Here in this room, we might be able to hear your voice, but we use the wireless handheld mic so that all of our families that are watching the livestream or traveling or are away get to participate in the conversation. And so if you're taking notes this morning, you can write the title of this morning's conversation at the top of your notes. Jesus, the better Joseph. That's the title of the conversation we're gonna have this morning. Jesus, the better Joseph. So here's the question. Well well, let me explain something really quickly. The bible uses a literary technique called types and shadows. And we see this, in in, works of fiction where author is setting up the story. We definitely see this in movies. Think about, like like like Star Wars. There are types and shadows of good guys. There are types and shadows, of bad guys. And in movies, we have the soundtrack to help cue us. Oh, that's princess Leia's theme. Oh, this must be a a a good guy. Or you can hear sounds of that imperial march, and you're like, uh-oh. Here comes a bad guy. Darth Vader. Is it Darth Maul? What's happening? Count Dooku. Types and shadows of good guys and bad guys and various characters. Do you know the bible employs and was the originator of the literary technique of using types and shadows? We see Joseph as a type and shadow of who later to come? That would Jesus. So now here's what we're going to do. We're going to look for just a few minutes at the at this particular story of Joseph. For only one person in the room was honest enough to say that this was the first time that they had heard this part of this story. For the rest of us, we've probably read this story many times, heard this story many times, but my hope is that as we look into Joseph as a proto Jesus, as a type and shadow of the messiah to come, it will do two things for us. Help us to enrich the story of Joseph so that it so that we don't get stuck into a rut and a pattern and a routine of like, yeah, I've read this, and then Joseph went down to Egypt, and then as he went into Potiphar's house, and I don't know. To break us out of that mold and to appreciate the story of Joseph more. Number two, that we would see our Messiah in the story of Joseph enriching and providing new insight and revelation to how wonderful Jesus is and how he is our better Joseph. With that in mind, let's look at these eight verses, and I would like to hear from you what similarities do you see in the story of Joseph connected to what you know of of Jesus, either personally, experientially in your own life and heart, or what we can read about him in the New Testament. So look back at those first eight verses. Come on up, Cap. Amanda's gonna kick us off. How is Joseph in this story like proto g how is Joseph a proto Jesus? There's lots of answers. I'll just do one. The one that I can't unsee is the part that Joseph had to play that Jesus also had to play, and that was his obedience. Oh. So you mentioned the, you know, in the text, it's in the text like there, he has favor for sure, but God always has a part and then he's so awesome because he always lets us have a part too. Because if we just get stuck with like, oh, some of, like, we were dealt you were dealt a good hand in life, and I was dealt a bad hand. God loves you, not me. Like, we can get stuck, and that's not biblical at all. So we always have a part to play in that favor because we all, if we're a believer, if we're a child of God, there's favor on our life. We are a child of the creator of the universe, right? But we, our part to play is obedience. And so our level of maturity, our level of favor, you know, how he went up in the ranks and all that is because he was obedient. If you read the whole story, it's a beautiful example of that. And then certainly Jesus was supremely obedient to the the best example we have of that. But that's the part I can't unsee. We we have to be obedient and not just feel like, oh, I'm unlucky, you know, or something like that and get out of the biblical narrative. I love it. Obedience. Joseph was forgiving, but Jesus is the greatest forgiver. I didn't even have any of these in my notes. It's so good. You're preaching to me. You're helping me. Mine's not as deep, but just like just like Jesus lived thirty years sort of with a veil being a guy and then was like, dun dun dun. He's Jesus. He's the Messiah. Joseph is sort of like that too reveals himself. Oh. In like obviously not as cool a way. Yeah. And if you're a fast page turner, Zechariah chapter 12 verse 10 is a beautiful prophecy of the nation of Israel collectively someday, the light bulb will come on, and they will recognize their messiah as Jesus from Nazareth, born in the humble town of Bethlehem. And the Bible says that when that national light bulb, that unveiling, that revealing, that connecting of the dots happens, that in a really good way, they will be absolutely devastated and humbled. And the Bible says they will look upon the one whom they have pierced, and each of them will weep and mourn in their own tent, that there will be a national recognition of their savior. Yes. You are the savior, the Mashiach, the one that we have been looking for, and, oh boy, you came two thousand years ago once already. Oh, wow. Nationally, but then also it says they'll weep each one in their own tent individually. Oh, what an incredible day that will be. And then according to Zephaniah three seventeen, it says that he will rejoice over them and calm all of their fears by singing a song over them. And he will forgive them of their iniquity. I forgive you. And we see that he already said that when? As he was being nailed to the cross, father, forgive them. They know not what they do. Oh, come on, y'all. You're preaching to me. Who has the mic? Yes, sir. Yeah. One thing that I never noticed about their connection is both of them suffered but also became sustenance for their people. Joseph specifically for his brothers and Jesus providing us deliverance for our sins. So, yeah. Oh, I love it. Joseph provided sustenance for their bodies. Jesus provided sustenance for their soul. And today, we're going to partake of the sustenance that Jesus provides by celebrating communion together. So you're already jumping ahead. I was just thinking the last part when he shows them, who he is, it the picture that came to my mind was the last supper because Jesus at that point knew who was going to betray him and like going back to the pit and when his brothers wanted to kill him and did that. I know it's not like a straight parallel, but that's Right. That's what I see as kind of like a reversal. Like, he he wasn't he was forgiving. Like, I mean, he didn't he wasn't he didn't hold that anger that they had that same way. That's the beauty of the literary technique of using types and shadows. We're able to read Joseph, look forward, and and think about Jesus and consider Jesus and see him in a new light. And we're able to see what what Jesus did, what Jesus went through, and it gives us greater insight retroactively into what god was doing in Joseph's heart. In the the beauty there and the the connection, they fill in colors and shadows of the portrait that god the father is painting for us of these characters. And the better the portrait, the clearer you can see and the better connection. And we've all experienced reading a book and then seeing the movie. Now not always is the movie as good as the book, but when you see the movie, it helps to fill in the shading and the characters and the relief and the depth of the portrait that the author or the director is trying to have come across. Let's look at this. Both Joseph and Jesus were dearly loved by their father. Special, honored, favored. Both yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. All you people read my notes. Both Joseph and Jesus were given a position of stature and status and honor above the others. Both Joseph and Jesus, among the others, their status was not initially recognized and honored that the father had given them. Both lived a blameless life. I'm not saying that Joseph was sinless, but what did Joseph do to earn himself getting beat up by his brothers and thrown into a pit? Nothing. What did Jesus do to deserve to be handed over and treated like a criminal? Nothing. Both of them were sent by their father on a specific mission. I'm trying to to help you to see some of these things. The connections that you guys have made are, like, way better than mine. I love it. I also love that our format here at Tribe and our vibe of Tribe lends itself to you being an active, engaged participant in the digging in God's word. If you are looking for a service where the person up here just spoon feeds and baby bird feeds you, then great fantastic. Great on them and great for you. Great. That's not what god has called us to or me to. I don't want to spoon feed you and treat you like a baby. I want to see you grow in maturity and grow in maturity of being able to handle god's word. And when we do these things like digging in together, what do what do you see? What parallel what connection can you make? That's not me making the connection for you. That's that that you're doing that, and I love to see that. And I'm so proud of you for when you make those connections. Brian, can I serve up a plate? Yes. At the dinner table? The parallel I was seeing was when Jesus and Joseph both left their father's house and went to a place of servitude and and then worked up through serving miracles and prophecy. Joseph, you know, potentially saving the nation of Egypt and surrounding nations with the stockpile of grain and all of Jesus' miracles. And then the prophecy that Joseph has to to see through that with the dreams and visions and certain games. I love it. I love it. And here comes another one. Send it right up here. Types and shadows of Jesus, bible versus the chosen. Yeah. Yeah. Seeing the chosen. Mhmm. Yeah. Yeah. Gives you more you go, oh my gosh. It the Bible is very good at making impressions upon you but when you can put it in the vernacular of you understanding through seeing physical people. Yeah. It's it's very eye opening and moving. Yeah. To see Peter's hair wet from the storm. You're like, yeah. Okay. That makes sense. To see the dust on the disciples' feet, to see them cringe and cower when Roman soldiers walk by like, oh, yeah. That's that's good. Now we have to be discerning. Right? Because the chosen is not canon, but you all know that. The way the scenes set up in Genesis made me think of specifically, I think it's at the end of Luke but it's after Jesus has been crucified and then risen from the dead and the disciples are all like camped out in someone's house and they're just freaked out and they're alone in this room and Jesus walks in and says, it kind of is like, come close to me and don't be afraid and it's me and you know, here's the the nails in my sides and come touch me and it just, I think I was reminded of that because in this passage in Genesis, Joseph is like, hey, I'm here. I'm your brother. Don't be afraid. Draw near to me. And there's just that moment of Jesus doing that for his disciples in a moment of fear for them and confusion after he's risen from the dead. I love it. Z. Woah. Yeah. And there's only 11 disciples, just like there's only 11 brothers. Stop it now. Now y'all are preaching better than me. Stop it. You've been threatened my fragile ego with all this Now, I gotta come up with something really good here. Let's zoom in on verse five. Verse five. Joseph says, don't be upset. Don't be angry with yourselves. For selling me to this place. It was god who sent me here ahead of you. Now, quick pause. In in the the verses that we read earlier, Joseph makes it super duper clear that this was not the orchestration of, in any way, the brothers or even Joseph himself. But there was a bigger hand. There were bigger forces at work so that if his brothers ever got the idea in their head like, hey. Good thing we sold Joseph as a slave because now look at us. Nope. They'll never ever ever be able to take credit for it in the same way that it is by grace that we have been saved, not through work so that no man can, what? Boast. We don't get to take any credit for it. Is it Calvinism? Is it Arminianism? Yes. Let's just weld them both together together on the anvil of god's eternal truth. Right? So Joseph says, it was god who sent me here ahead of you. Oh, there should be some more hyperlinks going off in your mind about proto Jesus. I'm going to prepare a place for you. Hello. I'm going ahead of you. She's doing a happy tippy tap up here to preserve your lives. Underline that word preserve in your bible. I'm going ahead of you to preserve your lives. Now I've scratched around at the definition of that word in Hebrew. That Hebrew word for preserve is where we get in part the English word messiah or the Hebrew word. It's not a one for one translation, but the root is the same. I was sent ahead of you in a way to be your savior. And when you look at that definition of the word to preserve, it is a great English word that we are familiar with that captures the definition of the Hebrew word, to preserve, to keep, to to hold on to so that nothing leaks away, but all that was meant to be stored up is kept in its fullness for a future time or for a person. Preserved. That's the same root word for Mashiach. I have a different version. In my book, says, send you ahead, sent me ahead of you to preserve for you a remnant on Earth and to save your lives in a great deliverance. Wow. Would you read that for us one more time, please? That's so good and rich and fantastic. This is this is NIV. Thank you. To preserve for you a remnant on Earth and to save your lives by a great deliverance. Wow. There's a Hebrew word called Selah, which means to just stop and let what was just said sink in. Oh, thank you. Joseph didn't know god's plan until he saw his brothers stand before him. On the other hand, Jesus knew from an early age exactly what god's plan was for his life. Fun word study to do sometime is to look up that phrase or that word realize in the story of the gospels because you'll see the disciples are usually not realizing what's going on and Jesus fully realizing the moment. Joseph finds himself here and the dots are are only connected fully once his brothers walk into that royal chamber where he's sitting there as a magistrate. And Joseph was like, I can't believe it. Full circle moment. Holy cow. Jesus, everything he stepped into, he knew what he was doing. Joseph was sent to Egypt to prepare the way to take care of his family's physical and material needs. Jesus takes care of not only those, but this is one of the many reasons that makes Jesus the better Joseph is that Jesus takes care of all of our needs. Salvation is found by Jesus and Jesus alone to give us new life. And that word that word life is Zoe. Three words that could have been used there. Three. Count them. A b c d e. Three. One is bios. That's do you have a heartbeat? The other is psuke, psychology. Are you thinking, your chooser, your mind, will, and emotions? But there's a third kind of life that only can be imparted or given to us by god, and that is Zoe, whole and complete, lacking nothing kind of life. You know, what stands in my mind is Jesus, yes. Joseph, yes. But thinking about god, this is like a clash of the divine, the divinity of god migrating with the humanity of man and notice how the brothers that did what they did which was we would consider to be not a good thing versus what Joseph who he was but yet the the unmerited grace and love of god, the unconditional love of god, not just bless Joseph but the unconditional love of god also bless the brothers that did the wrong and many times, we try, I think sometimes in the way that we have an idea about having a relationship with god, sometimes we have the tendency to lean on what you gotta make sure that you cross every T, make sure you. Every I in order that god can bless you but these brothers did something that was wrong and in spite of their wrongdoing, the unconditional love of god was still bestowed upon their lives which reiterates the fact that what you were saying earlier, our salvation is not predicated upon what we do or what we don't do but it is because of one thing and one person and that is the love that can only come from god himself. Praise the lord. Amen. In Romans, he says, it is his kindness that leads us to repentance. Joseph's kindness demonstrated towards his brothers. Sacks full of grain and their money back above and beyond super abundance. Jesus, forgiving his torturers in the moment and extending his gracious, loving kindness to the generations like ripples sent out into the future that you and I and anyone with ears to hear and a soft heart and obedience like you mentioned earlier to receive his super abundant, gracious kindness. My gosh. Joseph had every right to the a new younger brother, Benjamin, to be like, Benjamin, you get the blessing because you're the only one of the other brothers that were not a co conspirator. So, Imma bless you, Benjamin. But his gracious kindness poured over the brothers after the wickedness that they've done, after the wickedness in our heart, Jesus doesn't just dismiss but he deals with our sin to remove it so that the legal requirements of the law can be satisfied and his super abundant favor can pour out on us. Okay. I'm like, I can't follow that but I got him. So, what the hyperlink for me was when Joseph wept so loudly that people could hear it through the walls and the hyperlink was when the shortest verse in the Bible, Jesus wept, right? And the context of Jesus weeping was I think it's it's super deep like, oh yeah, his friend died and everybody was sad and so Jesus wept with him but I think it's deeper than that and I think it has to do with A, it came into, well, if you were here, our brother wouldn't have died. So, what up? Like, you're our best friend. Like, why did you let my brother die? And I've been there. Often times, we think that god owes us something. Like, we prayed for this person and they died anyway But Jesus and Israel is like him, they actually realized that he is the resurrection and life. He asked Mary. I am the resurrection and the life. Do you believe me? And she's like, yeah. I believe you. So, Jesus in his purpose and one person just realizing who he was as savior. Caused him to weep. I think he also realized that there's going to be millions of people throughout the ages that have no idea what he did for them. Someday that they will that that scripture in Zechariah you were talking about where they will finally mourn and weep because they didn't realize all this time who Jesus was and what he did for them. All these things are connected in the morning and the realization of who the savior is and that he doesn't owe us anything because he paid the price for our lives. Like, that's it. Like, we are just like the brothers. We don't deserve to have the riches of the glory of god and salvation. Like, the wages of sin is death but the gift of god is eternal life in Christ Jesus. And that price was paid similar to Joseph, the proto Jesus for a reunification of the family. I wrote this down in my notes. In the same way that Joseph brings the whole family back together. Jesus brings us back into god's family for renewed relationship and fellowship. And he knows that we have such chronic short term memory that he created an ordinance, a memorial event so that every time we corporately take to get take part in this memorial event. We get to be reminded afresh of what Joseph did. You know, Joseph didn't go by Joseph in the palace administration. I got a text from one of our viewers that his Egyptian name means savior. That because of that savior, we get to be brought back into his family. Invite you to stand up. Would that be alright if I prayed for you? Thank you, Jesus that you are the better Joseph and you provide not only for our physical needs but for the deep needs of our soul. Thank you that Jesus that Joseph's Egyptian name was savior but Jesus, you are the savior, not only of a family of Israel, but of the entire world. Thank you for your great provision.
