The Gift or the Grasp

A study guide · October 4, 2026

Watch or read it

In one paragraph

The message this evening drew a line between two passages most people would never think to connect, asking what it looks like to grasp for what we want versus receiving what God gives. The conversation moved from the garden of Eden to an ancient Jewish feast to the words of Jesus, and landed as an encouragement to anyone who has quietly chosen faithfulness over grasping. The title the preacher...

Read together

  1. Genesis 3:1-11 Primary passage read and discussed to illustrate humanity's grasping in the garden
  2. Leviticus 23:39-44 Primary passage read and discussed as the feast of Sukkot, contrasted with the fall as a picture of receiving God's gifts
  3. Matthew 6:25-34 Jesus's words on worry and seeking first the kingdom of God, used to bring the message into the New Testament
  4. Song of Solomon Quoted loosely: 'with one glance of your eye you have ravished my heart,' used to illustrate turning eyes from grasping toward Jesus

What was said

  • Read Genesis 3 and Leviticus 23 side by side this week and look for connections you have not noticed before.
  • Pick one area of your life, whether gear, your calendar, or a relationship, and ask yourself honestly whether you are receiving what God has given or grasping for what you want.
  • If you are in a season of waiting on God's timing and resisting the temptation to grasp, take a few quiet minutes to let that be an act of trust rather than frustration.
  • If you are a young adult at Tribe, find Bethany or Phil after the service and get connected to the young adults Bible study and fall activities.
  • If you want to serve at Tribe, talk to the pastor after the gathering about joining a greeting rotation or another hands-on role.

Talk about it

  1. The preacher pointed out that Eve slightly misquoted God's instruction, adding 'you must not touch it' to what God actually said. How do you think small distortions of what God has said, even well-meaning ones, can open the door to bigger problems in our own lives?
  2. One person in the room suggested that God's commands function less like harsh rules and more like a fence built for protection. Where in your own life have you looked back and recognized that a boundary God set was actually protecting you, even when it felt restrictive at the time?
  3. The message drew a contrast between grasping, taking what God has not given, and receiving, accepting what God freely offers. Where do you feel the pull to grasp right now, and what would it look like practically to wait on God's timing instead?
  4. The preacher said the fullest joy comes from enjoying God's gifts God's way, and the congregation extended that idea from gear and possessions to calendars and time. What area of your life, possessions, time, relationships, or ambitions, is hardest for you to hold loosely before God?
  5. Toward the end of the message, the encouragement was that God sees every time you have chosen not to grasp, even when no one else noticed. How does it change the way you make quiet, everyday decisions to believe that God is keeping that kind of record?
