• Read Isaiah 43:10-13 and Isaiah 46:3-4 this week and sit with the phrase 'I am he' and what it meant for Jesus to say it in the garden.
• The next time you feel overwhelmed by a hard situation, pause and ask Jesus out loud to bring his light and clarity into it before you reach for your own solutions.
• Look up the instances of the word 'realized' in the Gospels as Brian suggested, and notice how often Jesus understood what was happening while the people around him did not.
• Memorize or write out the chorus of 'My Hope Is Built on Nothing Less' and let it be a reminder this week of what ground you are actually standing on.
• Sign up on one of the clipboards in the back to bring Sunday morning treats or a Tuesday night meal to the young adults group at the TMC.

Talk about it

1. Brian talked about the gift bag illustration, where complexity is the tissue paper and clarity is the present inside. When you have been in a genuinely hard season, did you find the gift eventually, and what did it take to get past the tissue paper?
2. The soldiers, the disciples, and Jesus were all in the same scene but seeing it through completely different lenses. What tends to shape the lens you bring to a difficult situation, and how do you know when your lens is off?
3. Brian said that apart from the light of Jesus, our own wisdom, experience, and self-help are insufficient, and that any success we have had on our own is, in his words, pure luck and the good graciousness of God. How does that land with you, and where have you personally seen the difference between your own light and his?
4. Peter pulled out his sword and started swinging. Brian connected that to our tendency, when things get complex, to go on the attack, blame, or make excuses. When have you seen that reaction in yourself, and what would it have looked like to respond differently?
5. The sermon closed with the hymn line, on Christ the solid rock I stand, all other ground is sinking sand. What in your life right now are you tempted to stand on instead of him, and what would it look like practically to shift your footing?
