The World's First Selfie

A study guide · October 2, 2023

Watch or read it

In one paragraph

Brian wrapped up Tribe's twenty-one day focus on Israel by introducing the feast of Sukkot, one of seven annual feasts God established in scripture. He walked the room through what Sukkot is, why Tribe pays attention to these feasts at all, and what it might look like to actually practice it this week. Coming out of COVID, Brian said he felt the Lord pressing him not to chase the world's frantic...

Read together

  1. Matthew 18:20 Brian prays 'wherever two or more are gathered, you are there in the midst'
  2. Luke 17:32 identified as the second shortest verse in the Bible: 'Remember Lot's wife'
  3. Leviticus 23:33-42 read aloud as the foundational passage establishing the feast of Sukkot
  4. Deuteronomy 16:9-12 read aloud as a second foundational passage on the feast of weeks
  5. Matthew 24 Brian says Jesus uses the word 'know' seven times and illustrates with a fig tree about knowing the season of his return
  6. Psalm 91:1 Brian reads it as a picture of dwelling in God's shelter: 'those who dwell in the shelter of the most high will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty'
  7. Mark 9:1-13 read aloud as the transfiguration account, connecting Peter's offer to build shelters to the feast of Sukkot

What was said

  • Build a simple sukkah this week, even if it is just in your living room, and spend some time sitting in it.
  • Use the daily guide from Sunday to read the verse, do the activity, and sit with the question for each day of Sukkot.
  • Come out to the camping trip at Little Granite Creek on Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday evening, even if only to bring food and share in the worship.
  • Pick something you have been holding onto from your past and, as Brian put it, leave it in the rearview mirror rather than dragging it into the week ahead.
  • Set aside a few minutes each day this week to be still before the Lord and ask him what he wants to recalibrate in your life right now.

Talk about it

  1. Brian talked about coming out of COVID and how the instinct was to put the pedal to the metal and make up for lost time rather than pause and process. Have you felt that pressure in your own life, and what did it cost you?
  2. Three reasons were given for why God invites us into his feast rhythm: to remember, to recalibrate, and to rehearse. Which of those three do you find hardest to actually do, and why?
  3. Kathy described recalibration using the image of a scale with a tare button, zeroing out what doesn't belong so you can measure what matters. Can you think of a time God pressed that tare button in your life? What did he zero out?
  4. Peter's instinct on the Mount of Transfiguration was to build shelters, and Brian connected that to Peter recognizing a possible fulfillment of Sukkot from a lifetime of rehearsing the feast. What does it mean to you personally that these feasts are described as rehearsals for something still coming?
  5. Psalm 91 verse one was read: those who dwell in the shelter of the Most High will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty. What does it actually look like in your daily life to dwell there rather than just visit?
