In one paragraph

The speaker, who identified himself as Jay, opened with a story about working with troubled teenage boys at a boarding school in Texas, then revealed that he had been one of those boys himself, sitting in church going through the motions until something broke through. The sermon focused on transformation, what it is, why it matters, and why it is harder for people who are already close to the...

Read together

  1. 2 Corinthians 5:17 cited as evidence that transformation is the mark of knowing Jesus, 'if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation'
  2. Isaiah 49:6 cited as evidence that transformation is a witness to others, 'I will also make you a light for the gentiles'
  3. Matthew 5 referenced briefly as the salt and light passage, Christians are called to be different
  4. John 21:15-19 main passage read aloud, Jesus asks Peter three times if he loves him and tells him to feed his sheep
  5. John 13:37 cited as Peter boasting he would lay his life down for Jesus
  6. Luke 5 referenced to show Jesus first found Simon fishing, paralleling the scene in John 21
  7. Ephesians 4:22-24 cited as the call to put off the old self and put on the new self created after the likeness of God
  8. 1 John 1:8-9 cited on repentance, 'if we say we have no sin we deceive ourselves' and God is faithful to forgive if we confess
  9. Psalm 139:23-24 David's prayer cited as a model for inviting God to search for any offensive way within us

Talk about it

  1. Jay told his own story of sitting in church every week, going through the motions, and not realizing how far he was from God. Have you ever been in that place, and if so, what finally got through to you?
  2. Jesus asked Peter three times if he loved him, and the Greek words for love shift between agape and phileo across the exchange. What do you think the difference between those two kinds of love looks like in a real person's daily life?
  3. Jay pointed out that the disciples, instead of waiting for Jesus or going out to preach, drifted back to fishing, their old way of life. Where in your own life do you find yourself drifting back to old habits or patterns when things feel uncertain?
  4. Jay talked about the idea of subtraction, making room rather than just adding more spiritual activity on top of an already packed life. What is one thing you could realistically remove or cut back to create more space?
  5. Joy made the point that transformation is already happening whether we choose it or not, and the real question is what we are being formed by. What are the things in your life right now that are shaping you, and are you happy with where they are taking you?
