Brian preached from Psalms 37:34, a verse he said the Lord placed on his heart in December as a word for Tribe fam heading into 2023. The message stayed close to one idea: God's promises are always guaranteed, but they are not automatic. The congregation worked through that idea together, with people sharing, asking questions, and pushing back throughout.
What was said
The verse opens with "don't be impatient for the Lord to act," and Brian quoted Bill Johnson of Bethel Church in Redding, California, who says that sometimes it takes the Lord a long time to act suddenly. To illustrate, Brian returned to the story of Zechariah from the previous week. Zechariah and his wife had prayed for a child for years, and there was evidence in the text, Brian said, that Zechariah had quietly given up on the promise. The angel had to remind him of it. That, Brian said, is the pattern: God does not forget his promises, but we can.
Brian then moved the congregation to Hebrews 11, the chapter of faith, reading from verse 32 onward. He walked through the action words in the passage, things like overthrew, ruled, shut, quenched, put whole armies to flight, and then paused on one word that did not seem to fit: received. His point was that receiving is not passive. He used Sarah and Abram as the example. God promised them a child. God gave Abram the ability to father one. But had Abram not acted, the child of promise would not have come. The promise was guaranteed, but it required their participation.
That partnership between God's part and ours was where Brian spent the most time. He said God always invites us into the fulfillment of his promises, and that invitation asks something of us. The congregation connected this to other things Brian had said before, including the idea that spiritual gifts like speaking in tongues require you to actually try, and that you will never score if you never shoot. One person added that you also have to know what the promise is before you can act on it, because too often people try to manufacture action without first hearing what God has said. Brian called that an accurate segue back to the text.
Back in Psalms 37:34, Brian worked through the Hebrew behind two phrases. The first, translated as "put your hope," carries the picture of twisting strands of rope together, the way Abram and Sarah's faith and action and God's enabling were twisted into one cord. The second phrase, "travel steadily along his path," carries the meaning of watching, waiting, observing, and being on guard, not passively but actively. Brian used the descent from the upper saddle to the lower saddle on the Grand Teton to make the point concrete. There are many trails down from there, he said, but most of them cliff out. You have to stay on the correct path and stay alert, because the wrong ones can look well-defined for a long time before they become dangerous.
Brian closed by noting that his path in the verse refers not only to the route from one place to another but to the manner in which you travel it, including God's timing. Rushing ahead of that timing, he said, is like Abram going to Hagar: you know roughly where you are trying to go, but you have taken yourself off the trail. The invitation he left the congregation with was to twist their faith into God's promises, travel steadily without rushing his timetable, and trust that he will honor that faithfulness in his own time.

- Write down promises you believe God has spoken to your heart, so you have something concrete to hold onto and pray back to him.
- Pray Psalm 139:23-24 each morning this week: ask God to search your heart, know your anxious thoughts, and point out anything in you that offends him.

We're gonna do some really familiar songs this morning because we're having some technical issues and don't have power.

you're just gonna have to close your eyes and sing your heart out. How's that sound? Oh, Jesus, we come before you this morning to remind ourselves that you're the reason that we're here, that we've come to meet with you in this place and we sing of your goodness this morning. I thank you for every heart in this room that we are not here by accident today. That you have a plan and a purpose for each and every one of us to speak to each and every one of us today.

We just thank you this morning. It's all we have to give back to you is our praise with a thankful heart today. We just wanna see you lifted high. See you lifted high. Holy, I want to see you.
Yes, Lord, we declare that in this place today. We wanna see you move and see you work. Let's just take a minute and just be still beforehand today. So, come and speak to us today. Maybe you have a word or a picture that you've placed on someone's heart that you wanna share with us today.
Lord, we just give you permission to come and speak to us today. Maybe there's something that was bubbling up in your heart or your mind while you were worshiping and maybe it's just for you. And maybe the Lord would have you step out and encourage and share something today. I feel like in these times and as we move forward, we need more and more and more and more of the saints sharing what the Lord is saying, sharing hope, sharing words of encouragement, speaking into things, into people's lives outside of this space. So let's practice here in this safe place, a room full of believers.
And I just encourage you to step out in faith today. Maybe you're like, well, I don't know if it's from the Lord. And he would say to you, there's one way to find out. So Lord, come speak to us.
So I feel like the Lord is saying, not just Lee, but us. Are you seeing what you see? Are you hearing what you hear? And Lord, I don't know the answer to that question. But holy spirit, our desire, the reason that we're here, we want to see what we see.
We want to hear what we're hearing. And that we want there to be a connection in our heart. So in the name of Jesus, we just declare that's the truth. That's the way it is. That's what he wants, and that's the way it's gonna be right now in Jesus name.
And any barrier, anything that would hinder us, that would separate us from seeing and from hearing and the connection to heart. We banish from our presence in Jesus name and we say, thank you, father god. Thank you, holy spirit. Okay.
I heard a sermon this week and actually, there's a book that this guy wrote about it. I can't remember his name, but it was called My Mess His Miracle. And oh my gosh, it just hit home of the messes that I have made in my life and how he's turned my messes into his miracle. I mean, because of the stupid decisions I'm to you. I'm I just wanna encourage people that we are so critical of ourselves and our past and the devil loves to just dangle him in front of us all the time.
How could you be forgiven for being doing this or saying that? And it's he turns it into his miracle. So, I just want to encourage everyone here. Don't judge yourself. Don't beat yourself up because god can use you and he will use you.

Good morning. So I've been, you know, the read through the bible plan that we all try to do at the beginning of the year again. Right? Not try, but do. And again, being in the book of Genesis like so many people, and it seems like I've heard so many messages recently that have characters from Genesis in it.
You know, that's because people are in Genesis right now. Right? So, anyways, I was and I do the listening thing. I'm not a big reader, but, you know, I can multitask. So I listen.
I listen to the Bible a lot. So, anyway, listening, you know, and came across, you know, you you you're going to where God's promised them a son, and they're not having a baby. And so Sarah gives, Abraham Hagar. And, and he, you know, she she become he become she becomes like his servant wife, you know? And then she's cast out twice.
Right? Once when she's pregnant and once when Ishmael is 14. And on one of those occasions, I don't remember which one it was. It might have been the first one, where the angel actually does appear to her. It's not just from the sky.
She actually sees this person and is talking to them, and they promise her that out of Ishmael as well is going to come this mighty nation. Right? 12 princes. And in one of the translations, she says, I have seen the one who sees me. Hagar is an Egyptian slave, and she's now become, I think, a servant they bought her or whatever.
And here she is, a no one. And she says, I have seen the one who sees me. Now fast track a little bit, and Abraham's talking to God about a couple of the promises that God has given him. And he puts the promise before God. He said, you have said that this is what you're going to do.
And I started to think, I thought, Melody, you know, God has given you so many promises from when you first have accepted the Lord, and I'm talking about promises of the heart. Promises where you're in your spirit, he's talking to you. There are promises in his word. Yeah. Great and exceeding precious promises in his word.
Yes and amen. But these are the ones that God, you know, what are those promises? I know they're there, but have I written them down? You know, and I thought, I better get busy. I better I better backtrack now and start writing some of those things, you know.
So first of all, you know, all my children will be taught of the Lord, and great will be the peace of my children. That's a promise that I need to remember because God spoke that to my heart when I was a new believer. And I wanted babies, and I wanted my baby's life to go well. And that's a promise that I can't afford to forget, you know, in these times. And just wanna encourage you, as you sit here, you have your phones, take notes.
Because every time we gather together, God is giving promises to you. And you sing them out when you're praising. You sing them out and you declare them. But if you don't write them down, you're gonna lose that vision. You need to write them down and you need to get busy, get back to them day by day.
You need to hear what God has said and need to speak it and remind him. Because he's there. And every person, the Hagars of the world and Abrahams of the world have a part that they play. It's every single person that is important, that has a vision, that's been called by God, and that has been given these promises. And God is there.
So we just need to kinda tap into that a little bit more. I love you. Thank you. Thank
you for that encouragement. Brian always says his brain leaks. You gotta write it down so you can go back and remember it. It's a good word. Oh lord, we just thank you for today.
Do remind us today of your promise as we surrender even more. As we surrender to you, Lord. Yes, Lord. Sing this. Oh, to Jesus, Lord, as we go from this kind of worship to the next kind of worship of honoring your word and we just ask that you would continue to speak to us today.
Speak to us through your word, speak to us through Brian's message today and through all of our revelations revelations as we share and have this be a conversation today. We wanna leave here changed by you because we met you. And when we leave this place that people would even wonder what is going on with them. That we would just be full to overflowing because we've met you and been in your presence today. In Jesus name and everybody said, amen.

We're going to read just one verse, but we're taking our time unpacking it because I believe that back back in in December, I believe that the lord put a word on my heart for us individually, for all of you that are here and a part of the live stream, and for us corporately as a tribe family as we head into 2023. Alright? And the word is from Psalms 37 verse 34. So, again, I don't have the verse on the screen or notes for today, but I know that you can follow along carefully.

Yep. All of your church merch. Don't be impatient for the Lord to act. How many of you let's be honest, you can answer honestly. How many of you feel like, all right, I'm now like that one sentence is all I need to work on for the rest of the year.
That's it, I'm full, I got it. Don't be impatient for the Lord to act. And last week you heard me say one of our heroes, Bill Johnson from Bethel Church in Redding, California, says, Sometimes it takes the Lord a long time to act suddenly. Sometimes it takes the Lord a long time to act suddenly and if you remember last week, we got off the page a little bit as we talked about the story of the high priest who was John the Baptist's dad Zechariah? Zechariah?
Well, okay, okay. All right. Well, just didn't want have to turn in there. So remember, Zechariah is met by an angel when he's on duty at the temple. And the Lord says to Zechariah, the Lord has heard your prayers.
And Zechariah, they were because he and his wife were praying for a child. But they were long past the childbearing years. Had they stopped praying, there's there's some there's some evidence in the text that it wouldn't stretch the text too far to say that Zechariah had given up on that promise from the lord. But the Lord heard it, and always in his timing, which is way better than our timing. He's like, now it's time for the fulfillment of that promise.
The angel had to remind Zechariah of that promise and that exchange that was happening. Any promises that the Lord has given you that you've like, oh, that promise has expired and I've given up on it. If it's a promise from the Lord, it is always guaranteed, but it is not always automatic. Clay and then Leah.
I just want to make sure that I'm hearing this correctly in Leah's version. Mine says, wait for the lord and keep his way. So, I mean, it's not just open ended that we're just gonna wait and things are gonna go our way. We do have to keep God's word in our hearts and as we as we forge forward. I just wanna make sure that that's that I didn't miss that in what her interpretation said.
You're right. You're right. So we've talked about this a bunch. Three different kinds of waiting. There's doctor's office waiting.
We're like, happens when it happens. There's birthday waiting where you're excited, but there's nothing really that you can do to accelerate it. Then a third type of waiting that we've talked about here at Tribe is called finish line waiting, where if you are a spectator and your friend is running a race, that when you see them turn the corner and they're coming down the home stretch, that there is a measure of anticipation and excitement and exuberance, that with your enthusiasm, in a way all analogies break down at some point but in a way, with your excitement and enthusiasm and anticipation, and your shouting and your cheering, you're lending them strength to find that that that extra bit of reserve that they have across the finish line and your cheering and hurrying actually accelerates them to reach to cross the finish line sooner, there is a measure of finish line waiting here in this verse that seeing, not a passive thing. I want to find a verse in Hebrews for us to look at that. This is a good diversion.
And then we're going to jump right back in. Leah, did you have something? And let me look up this verse.
Yeah, you had said in his time, right, with Zachariah and John the Baptist. And it hit a red light in my head. So I don't know how many of you guys remember Salty, the singing songbook, but I've looked repeatedly for his records.

I just remember the song that I used to sing when I was like seven. Right? In his time. In his time, he will make all things beautiful in his time. Now why is it that we sang that as a child, but we don't I don't remember the last time that that was in my church praise, but it was there, blatantly when you saw that the song came back.

Now, we're kinda In one thing
with the waiting.

It needs to include in there, it's to be frustrated as you wait. I can remember specifically in the nineties. We are older, Leah. And Clay was looking for a job. This was after their family business closed.
And everybody kept saying, oh, Clay, you're such a great guy. You're not gonna have any trouble getting a job. And every time he would interview for a job, we were like, this is it. This job is perfect. And the door shut for some reason.
And I could remember specifically, we were out feeding horses one day, and Clay, it was just like he said, I am so sick of hearing what a great guy I am. I am so sick of hearing, oh, that door is gonna open. And it you know, he never got discouraged. I was the one that he was always having to pick up. And it scared me.
I was like, oh, Clay's discouraged. You know? But and that's so real as far as being a Christian and knowing that you wait on God and that God's timing is perfect. But there's frustrations in that waiting. And little did we know he well, he did have the perfect job for us.
You know? We moved to Montgomery. It was the best thing ever for our marriage, our family. But when we needed that job, it wasn't happening in our time.
Yeah.
So there can be a lot of frustrations as we wait even though we know he's got it.
In the book of Revelation, the saints under the throne are saying, How long, O Lord? How long? There's an element of our human experience that we can connect with and relate to as we are waiting. There's a great verse. Let's go ahead and turn there.
In Hebrews chapter 11, while you're keep your finger in Psalms 37 because we're gonna come back. Hebrews chapter 11 is the great chapter of faith, and I'm gonna start reading in verse 32. And it says this, how much more do I need to say? It would take too long to recount the stories of faith of Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jebeth, David, Samuel, all the prophets, and then here are the things that they did by faith. This is so important.
By faith, these people overthrew kingdoms. Wow. Okay. That's like that's big. That's huge.
By faith, they ruled with justice. They received what God had promised them. They shut the mouths of lions. They quenched the flames of fire. They escaped death by the edge of the sword.
Their weakness was turned to strength. They became strong in battle and put whole armies to flight. So if you go back and look at each of the action words in that passage, there's one action word that doesn't quite fit for for doesn't quite fit. One of these words just isn't like the other.
We guess the melody on it.
Okay. You get it. So
they overthrew. Do you get that one? Like, that's a big action word. You get it? Say, got it.
Got it.
Oh, they ruled.
Got it.
Get it?

They shut. Get it? Got it. Action word. Action word.
They quenched. They escaped. They became strong. They put whole armies to flight. Really action, offensive words.
But then there's one word in here that says they received. How is receiving an action word?
It's like an anti hero. I mean, it's
It's an anti action word. It's like an anti action word. So here's the idea. Like like when we receive something, would you consider that to be a passive thing or an active thing? Just normal.
Passive. Okay. So if I'm gonna I'm gonna receive your bible. Hand me your bible, Leah.
You have to reach out to receive it.
K? That's an action.
Okay. Well, alright. Fine. You're awesome. You're really messing up my point here.
For the rest of us, receiving is a passive thing. What do I gotta do? You just gotta receive it. What like, remember that I don't know why I'm stuck on all these old things today. Like, remember the the big thick envelope that would come from Ed McMahon every year?
The publishers clearing out sweepstakes. You ain't gotta do nothing. All you gotta do is receive your million dollars from Ed McMahon. Ain't nobody ever got that. All you have to do is just receive.
But why is that receive word right here in the middle, in the midst of all of these other action oriented words? It is because it is an action oriented word. We have to actively receive, or like we would say in Texas, grab a hold of. God's promises. This is so big, you guys.
By faith, we receive, or some translations say obtain, or grab ahold of, what God had promised them. So if God whispers a promise to your heart personally, or if you come across a promise in his word that you either say, woah, that's really cool, or god's like, peep peep peep peep, and he like like zaps it to you, a promise for from his word for you. That doesn't mean that it's automatically going to happen and all we have to do is just sit back and receive it. God's promises are always guaranteed, but they are not automatic. We have to.
There is a role that we play. There is a participation on our side of the equation that God invites us into. To appropriate, to grab ahold of you want to use a real charismatic churchy word to manifest into reality. Based upon this passage here, what can you see is our role in grabbing a halt of that promise? What is our role?

we've we've spent the last we've spent the last few minutes in Hebrews chapter 11. I did we did start in Psalms 37. We quickly got sidetracked. I jumped over to Hebrews eleven thirty four. That's where we've been for the last few minutes, and we're gonna go back to Psalms 37.
We're in Hebrews 11 verse 34, and everybody under 40 just pat somebody over 40 on the shoulder. Oh, okay. Some only the most mentally mentally and biblically limber are able to bounce back and forth. What yes, ma'am. Here we go.

I just I have a little, like, arrow pointing from 11 down to 12 that just says in in Hebrews 12 where it says, therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, talking about all those folks in 11, let us also, so just like they did, lay aside every weight and sin which clings so closely and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us. Looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith. For for the joy that was set before him endured the cross despising the shame and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God. Because it just talks about how they did not receive what was promised.
So that we so that through us, they should be made perfect. So I think our that part of that waiting and part of that, like, keeping his way is those three things, laying aside every weight and sin, running with endurance and looking to Jesus.
Such great key elements to grabbing a hold of what God has promised for us.
I feel like it like the winning is so hard because, like, the culture, like, today, like, promotes, like, instant gratification and, like you should get it right away and you shouldn't have to wait.
Joe, just use the microphone like you're supposed to use the microphone, just FYI. Actually put his mouth

What Joe says is that's becoming increasingly, my translation that's becoming increasingly harder in this day and age as we have more and more time saving devices allowing us to get that dopamine hit quicker and sooner and more often, and being able to the acceleration of the gratification of the things that we are looking forward to, working forward to, man, it becomes increasingly more challenging with the principles of the kingdom of God. Last thing, and then we're going to go back to Psalms 37. If you look in Hebrews 11, where is this Abraham? Get me to the Abraham.
Oh, here we go. Verse 11. Okay. Here's what I mean by this partnership, an invitation from the Lord to partner with him in the grabbing ahold of or seeing the fulfillment of the promises that he's given us. Here's what I mean by guaranteed, but not automatic.
Verse 11, it was by faith that even Sarah was able to have a child, though she was barren and was too old. She believed that God would keep his promise. So take that verse and explain to me what I mean by God's promises are guaranteed but not automatic. Using verse 11 as an illustration or an example of the axiom that I just told you. How do we see that axiom play out here in verse 11?
How was it? Did an angel appear to her or or
I can't remember.
I mean, just think about it. If god promised me something, I mean, and sent an angel or whatever, I can't imagine not believing it forever. I mean, that's pretty big. I mean, it's not just like a thought in my head. So if God if God promised it to her, I mean, it has to come true, and you have to believe it.
So Well, if you're a believer.
Yes. Yes. But his promises are not automatic.
So therefore, you just keep the faith and keep going. Keep the walk. Keep the fellowship.
So let's look at verse yes. I hear what you I'm picking up what you're putting down, but let's look at verse 11. How does verse 11 in Hebrews 11 exemplify or explain or reinforce the axiom that I just told you? The axiom is: God's promises are always guaranteed. There's promise not ever that God has made individually or corporately or in his word that he will fail or forget to fulfill.
They're guaranteed, but they are not always automatic. And that is exemplified here in verse 11. Jay is going to be brave and take a crack at what I'm trying to get at.
Where it says, even when Sarah herself Or right after that it says, even when she was past the age. That's where I think it People would think it's automatic. They're like, oh, I'm in my childbearing years. This is when God will fulfill his promise. Thinking that that's the automatic.
So where the faith comes into play is after that, when she's like, she's still considered him faithful past the age.
Well, that's So we're guaranteed. I see what I see what you're saying. She's still holding on to it.
Holding on to the promise even though she's
like, I'm past my childbearing years.
Where it would have been automatic.
Okay. I really like where you're going, and you're so close. If we're throwing horseshoes or hand grenades, you would get credit for that. But there's a key word in this verse that the heart, the bull's eye of what I'm trying to get at.
Mine says, because he regarded the one who had given the promise to be trustworthy.
Read all of verse 11.
By faith, even though Sarah herself was barren and he was too old, he received the ability to procreate because he regarded the one who had given the promise to be trustworthy.
Yep. So there's a keyword that I'm looking for and I heard it in that translation. It's not promise. There's nothing now we're just it's not received. It's not received.
So so it's not automatic.
Believe? She believes? No.

So I heard it in hers, and it's in the NLT. Does anybody know exactly where I'm going with this? I'm looking at Lissa and Amanda and Joy.
Here look, I'll read it again
and I'll just stop after every word and you give like a little nod. By faith, even though Sarah herself was barren and he was too old, he received the ability to procreate because he regarded regarded the one who had given the promise to be trustworthy.
Okay. So here's the axiom: God's promises are always guaranteed, but they are not automatic. God invites us into the fulfillment of the promise by us doing something. And that something, sometimes, many times, is like we read in verse, later in verse, in chapter 11, grabbing ahold of the promise by faith. There's this act of receiving, but there's an think about Sarah and Abram and and Abram and think about
how. Can try?

Alright. The story hits very close to home. One of the things the Lord is teaching me about this situation is if he has promised you a child, don't feel entitled to that promise. Don't stand there and stomp your feet because Sarah scoffed, right, when the angels were like, this time next year, your wife's gonna have a baby. And she's like, whatever.
I'm, like, 90 year 99 years old or whatever it was. Right? So first, like, it didn't say that it was because her faith that they had a child. It was Abraham's faith was the reason why they had a child. She was like, whatever.
That's not gonna happen or whatever her attitude was. That's ridiculous. It was Abraham's faith that, like, okay. I know my god, and he is a god of the impossible, and, you know, it's gonna happen in his time. And instead of, like, being like, I thought you said I was gonna be the father to nations.
What up? Where are you? Why aren't you fulfilling this? Like, it's all about attitude and humility, and I think that's a critical part of faith.
Okay. Attitude and humility are our key components and ingredients and valuable, and you are right. But we're going to try to confine our answer to what is said in the text in this particular passage. You are right, you are right, But let's let the text teach us. Here's why I don't know, for all of you teachers in the room, I'm probably doing a really horrible job at the Socratic method.

Look. It's in the text. It was by faith that even Sarah was able. What would have happened if Sarah and Abram had never gotten busy? Would Sarah have become pregnant and had a child?
Okay. All right. Great. Great. So there is a biblical precedent for immaculate conception.
There is a biblical precedent. But considering the text, the whole council of text, and specific promises about immaculate conception related to the Savior of the world, we can take that happening as the method of conception off the table. Is it reasonable for the reader, the studier of scripture, not me giving it to you, but you taking responsibility I'm not getting after you but you taking responsibility to unpack this and digest this and chew it and swallow it for yourself, is it reasonable to conclude that had Abram not gotten with his wife, the child of promise would have never come about? Yes. Nobody thinks of doing it when you're a 100 years old.
I mean, I don't know. Do they?

But that's why it's so key that that fits perfectly with what that scripture said is God gave him the ability. That's why that's so important. Exactly what Lee just said, but God gave him the ability to do that, what he had promised.
So so can can somebody put my terrible teaching together and make some sense? Because there's some really profound, deep, amazing, incredible truth here that I've I've probably done a really bad job at unpacking and trying to lead you along the path with some bread crumbs to get to this incredible truth. Mhmm. And
then I think in all of this, God's promises, it does require things from us. It does require faith, but it requires action. And whether we're able to fulfill what we think we're supposed to do, God will give us the ability to do it. So it it requires several things from faith to keep the walk, but, stand tall, stand firm, and believe.
It's good.
You referenced this in terms of spiritual gifts with speaking in tongues. You're like, you can pray and you can ask for that gift all you want, but until you give it a go and you let it rip, it's not gonna happen unless you partner with them and if you give it a try. And so I love sports. So if you wanna score a 100 game, you're never gonna do that unless you start shooting the basketball and trying.
It's great. That's great. That's great. That's great. Some dots are being connected.
I see a few, like, lights, like, trying to flicker on. You're getting it. You're getting it.
Well, even going back to what was shared at the beginning, none of this is possible if you don't know what the promises are. Like, you've got to stop and listen and hear God's word because what I've been thinking about is like, oh, well, I gotta obey. I gotta do my action part. Like, I've gotta do my part, but I don't know what my part is until I know what the promise is. I don't know I don't like, the way that we got our housing here in Jackson, like, we did all of our part.
We were putting out putting out, or looking for applications and talking to people and doing all the things or whatever. But it wasn't until, the person that we know that there was no way that we could have found this otherwise, came to us and we knew that that was the one or gave us the opportunity, then we could go and check out the house and then we could go and sign the lease and put our money down. But we have to know what that promise is first. And I think too often, we try to, like, conjure up our promise and do the actions first and try and make something happen, but we don't actually even know if that's what God is telling us is the next thing.
What a accurate and beautiful segue back into Psalms 37. 34. Yep. Psalms 37 verse 34. Put your hope in the lord and if you remember from last week, we're still the review.
If you remember from last week, that idea of putting your hope, that phrase in Hebrew, what is the Hebrew word for that that the word picture for put your hope? What's that? What was that picture? The what? Who?
Well,
not the Hebrew word. Sorry. Not the Hebrew word. But what is the what is the the English picture? Yes.
Yes. To twist the rope together. Think about Abram and Sarah. God gave him this promise. Abram does his part.
The gift was giving him the ability. Then he he does his part. There's that twisting together of God's part and our part. Putting your hope where? We talked about this last week.
What does it say? Where is where are we to put our hope? In the Lord. And what does that mean? Joy just said it.
Well, we gotta we gotta know him. We have to know his promises for us to give us something to grab a hold of. When we grab a hold of his promises, there's this byproduct of hope. Even if we, as Justin said earlier, die without seeing the fulfillment of those, we die so full of hope that people in the room are like, what is wrong with that guy as we're taking our last breath? He's so full of hope.
And even Moses. Did God promise that Moses would see the promised land at first? You're gonna lead my people into the promised land. He messed it up. Did Moses ever get to set foot in the promised land?
There's a trick question. I'm setting you up. Somebody somebody be brave and say, When did Moses get to set foot in the promised land? After he died, when? Not when he was buried because we know that Moses's body was buried in the wilderness somewhere.
Come on. Where? On the Mount Of Transfiguration in Israel. Even Moses. God's promises are always guaranteed.
Who had sickness in their body and died with sickness in their body. They might have died with sickness in their body, but that sickness stayed with the body. Billy Joe Dordery, the pastor of Victory Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, like one of the grandchildren of the the word of faith grandfathers of that that movement. There's beautiful elements to it. Was a word of faith preacher and and and had such a beautiful thriving ministry, got cancer.
Kenneth Copeland prayed for him. Who's the guy with the shirts? And you know, the whack the people with the jackets. Benny Hinn prayed for him. Like all these people were praying for him.
He died with cancer. But the moment his heart stopped pumping, he didn't take that cancer with him. Instantly healed. Moses died not getting to set foot in the promised land, but God's promises are always guaranteed that fulfillment happened later. Wait patiently for the Lord to act is what your translation says.
Right? Twist your faith into a braided cord of God's promise that produces hope. We have to cover some new territory, and then we're gonna wind down. The next part of the verse says, travel steadily along his path. That's as far as we'll go.
Travel steadily along his path. That word in Hebrew, travel steady, means to watch, to wait, to observe, and to be on guard. Travel steadily. Not haphazardly, not willy nilly. There's incredible terrain in the country of Mongolia.
It's the largest single landmass that is unfenced outside of Antarctica. There's no fences in Mongolia. And a lot of Mongolia is like this high beautiful plains grass step environment. And you can just take your car and you can just like a car could just drive and drive and drive and drive and drive drive. There are no roads.
You don't really hardly even need a road till it rains. That's not what this says. What the Bible says is travel steadily, and the idea is to watch, to wait for, to observe, and to be on guard. How do we know what to twist our hope into if we don't have God's promises revealed to us in his word or whispered to our heart? That doesn't give us something to hold onto, like you were saying, promises that the Lord whispered to your heart about your children that you continue to pray over them and claim and grab ahold of and reel in.
How? By faith. Last anecdote. If you've ever climbed the Grand Teton, you usually climb a lot of people. There are a lot of different ways to the summit.
If you climb the Owen Spaulding route, you go from the lower saddle up the trail to the Upper Saddle, and from there you climb the Owen Spaulding. And I've done that route several times. My favorite route is either the Upper Exome or the complete Exome or Direct Exome or whatever you want to call it. And you start the route, and there's actually a route topo map. If you've ever been to Tribe and you walk down the stairs, you're like, what's that weird art on the stairs?
Well, it's a route topo map of the complete Exim Ridge. So if you want to climb the Exim, just take a picture of that, and then you can That's all you need. That's all you need, and you'll be fine. But from the summit, if you've climbed the Upper Exome or the complete Exome, from the summit, When you come down, there's two rappels, and that puts you at the upper saddle. And Elisha knows all about this because a few years ago, he and I and some others went to go climb, and we did the Upper Exome Ridge.
There are two rappels, and you did amazing, by the way. The second rappel is a free hanging rappel where your feet aren't touching anything. You're just dangling over a cliff face, and it could be a good 60 feet free rappel that'll bring you back to the upper saddle. From there, you pull the ropes and you can take your harness off, stow the rope, and then there's a trail, a path that you can follow to get from the upper saddle down to the lower saddle. Well, interestingly enough, since there's a lot of traffic there, not everybody knows where they're going and what they're doing.
And so there are probably like 10 different paths that you could take from the upper saddle that will lead you down. However, there's only one or two of them that don't cliff out.

Right? And most of those paths, you can't really tell like your well defined path and then, boom, cliff edge. It gets harder to follow, harder to follow, it gets a little steeper, a little steeper, and then you get this loose gravel on top of rocky slabs that lead down into gullies that's very dangerous. When you're traveling from the upper saddle down to the lower saddle, when it says travel steady, it's so true. You literally have to be on guard that you are following the correct climber's path down from the upper saddle down to the lower saddle.
In the same way, this verse says, when we twist our faith into his promises, the next thing is we have to travel steady, according to his time and in his ways, so that we don't get drawn off into some trail that's going to peter out and leave us off the path and disillusioned and in fear instead of in faith, in doubting God's goodness, in trying to take matters into our own hands like Abram and Hagar. What an off trail path that was. He really cliffed himself out with that one. Put your hope, travel steady,
Jay. I couldn't help but think of the Matthew chapter seven verse thirteen, fourteen verse.
Oh, here we go. Connection.
Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction. And those who enter it enter by it are many. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life. And those who find it are few.
And that made
me think about like all those different paths up there on the ground that will lead you astray.
And some of them look super super enticing. Yes. They're like, woah, that one looks really good.
Can Yeah, I go see this is it?
I can see it lead for a while, but that gate is wide that leads to destruction.
Absolutely. How many, just by show of hands, you're not bragging, but like, yay, we want to celebrate you. How many of you have done the descent from the upper saddle to the lower saddle and know what I'm talking about? Did get clipped up. In the dark.
Keyboard. Keyboard. Keyboard. Cue the keyboard. I too have climbed the Grand and summited in the last rays of light, did the two rappels, and from the upper saddle knew enough, I need some more light, and if we are going to try to do this descent, I am so not confident.
So we divvied at the upper saddle at whatever that is, 12,900 or 13,000 feet without sleeping bags or sleeping pads because I knew that I didn't want to get, okay.
We had to knock on the because there's like a don't know, force service.

It's therapy.
Last thing. We now have three Hebrew phases. This one, and with the keynote that we'll have next week, you'll be able to track easier. This idea of travel steady, which means to put your hope in the Lord, which means to twist together. Travel steady means to watch, wait for, observe, but not passively, actively, and to be on guard.
Then this third thing is his path. Not only road or journey, but also the manner in which you travel. Anybody like to rush God's timetable?
Sure. Yes.
Okay. That means so if you are human in here, that means your tendency is to rush God's timetable. You might know his path, but the tendency is for us people to be like, Oh, this is amazing. Yes, I got it, I got it, I I got it, and off you go. But when it says his path, it doesn't just mean from point A to point B, but it's the manner in which you travel from point A to point B, not only the trajectory, but also the manner in which allowing his timing for things to develop.
That's as far as we'll go today. Put your hope in the Lord to twist together. Travel steady means to watch, wait, observe, and be on guard. His path, not only road or journey, but also the manner in which you travel. The invitation for you today and for us corporately as a tribe fam is to put our hope in the lord, to travel steadily along his path, and that he will honor us by giving us the land and we will see the wicked destroyed.
You just take a moment. Let's do some business with the Lord. And where you are, whether you're watching the livestream, you're in the VIP section, or tucked behind Cory's guitar right there. Just let's just take a moment and invite the Lord to help us take what we've talked about today and make that 18 inch drop from our thinker down to our knower. If this what we've talked about today only stays in our thinker, it will help you not.
But if by grabbing a hold of, praying this, confessing this, maybe writing down some personal personal action steps, it goes from your thinker down to your knower, That's where today's conversation has the ability to transform your life. Lord, help us in this
God's faithfulness is so good. That's such a great song. That song is called Promises. You can just look it up on Spotify. Sorry.
So as we stay in this attitude of worship just a few minutes more, something I was thinking of as we transition into bringing our tithe and giving up our offering, which is what we do every time we gather here at Tribe. It's just another expression of worship to him. It's how we say I love and I trust you. And so we've worshiped him today through his word. We've worshiped him through song, and then we're gonna worship him by bringing our tithe and giving of our offering.
But something I was thinking of, is Psalm one thirty nine twenty three and twenty four. And this is something you can pray every day. It's a good habit to get into as we think about, what we discussed today, and it's search my heart, oh God, and know my heart. Test me and know my anxious thoughts. Point out anything in me, you have to have to mean this when you say it because you will.
Point out anything in me that offends you and lead me along the path of ever lasting life. So as we think about this path analogy and what can digress us, sure is poor choices and and, you know, believing like Joyce said something that's not actually something he ever promised. But just make it a, perhaps a daily habit. This is my takeaway I'm just sharing. Make it a daily habit to say, God, search on anything in me that offends you.
That's just one less thing. As our friend, Joel Richardson says, it's like carrying a bunch of milk jugs on you. Why? When you run, why would you do that? That's silly.
Sniff Like those things, sniff that off. That's sin is what he was saying. So as we think about bringing our tithe to him, it might be easy for us to bring a tithe and offering to the Lord. It might be a challenge. And that's okay.
But his word is the same and he asks us to do that. Bringing a portion of our finances to him we see in the Bible. And tithe means tenth. And you see in the old testament, Abraham would give a tenth of his best to the Lord immediately. And so, the amount that you give is between you and the Lord, but be faithful to the Lord in that, in bringing your tithe because he's faithful to you.
We don't think of the tithe as, like God's a mob boss. Right? And we pay a tithe so nobody hurts us. Right? We don't think of it that way.
We shouldn't. We don't pay our tithe because it's something, you know, that we just check off on the Sunday box. Like, you go to church, you throw something in the bucket, that's what you do. Shift your heart as this is an act of worship to you, God. Might be easy, it might be challenging, but I'm giving you this hard earned money to you because I infinitely trust you with it.
And do what you want, bring people into your kingdom. I get to be a part of that. Wow. So think of it that way. So let's pray whether you're giving now or later.
And we're gonna pray together as we tithe. But practically speaking, if you have cash or check, we don't pass buckets or anything here. And we ask you as a corporate tribe family, search our hearts, know our anxious thoughts. And Lord, we ask you to point out anything in us that offends you.
Let us run free along the path that you have set before us, the path of obedience. And thank you that we get to be a part of your kingdom and what you're doing when we bring our tithe and then we give above and beyond that on offering to you. Lord, whether anyone ever knows the amount or sees the amount or not, thank you that we can just infinitely trust you that we obediently give what you ask, and then you do what you only you can do with it. And we thank you so much for that. Thank you for the kingdom work that will be done.

But I wanted to say statement? Yeah. Yes. We're we've had an interesting day here at Drive. But I see you and I say thank you.
It's not that we're just like, oh, yeah. Put them in the back. I just felt like we needed to say that. Cause it is a you're squished. And we see that.

Lord Jesus, thank you so much. Thank you that you care enough about our life that you have a plan and a path for our life. You invite us to partner with you in the fulfillment of your plan for our life when we travel steadily along your path. For anybody here in the sound of my voice that would say, I I I don't even know what that plan or path is. Reveal it to them, Lord.
Give them a hunger to search it out so that they don't cliff themselves out any longer. I command a blessing over each and every member of our tribe fam here today. We pray these things in Jesus' name, the strong, capable son of God. And everybody said Amen. Amen.
