Brian preached week three of the "Turn the Cat Around" series via a recording, since he was away on a climbing trip with his daughter. The phrase comes from a pastor mentor who used to say that when God's truth pets your fur the wrong way, you don't ask God to change, you turn your cat around. The message worked through the story of Naaman the leper in 2 Kings 5 and pressed the question of where, exactly, our hearts are still facing the wrong direction.
What was said
Brian opened the series with something he said the Holy Spirit had whispered to him: in the days ahead, the leadership of Jesus will be less complicated, but it will be more costly. That thread ran under everything else in the message. Following Jesus is not going to get harder to understand, but it is going to cost more to actually do it.
The story of Naaman set up the whole argument. Naaman was a Syrian army commander, an enemy of Israel, and yet the text says God had given him great victory. He also had leprosy. A young Israelite girl, taken captive in a raid, told his wife there was a prophet in Samaria who could heal him. Brian paused on that detail, the tragedy of the girl's situation and the faith she still carried, without pressing it too far since the text doesn't fill in those gaps.
When Naaman finally arrived at Elisha's house, Elisha did not even come to the door. He sent a servant out with instructions: go wash in the Jordan River seven times. Naaman was furious. He had expected a dramatic encounter, a hand waved over the leprosy, a name called out. Instead he got a messenger and a muddy river. Brian pointed out that the king of Israel had the same problem earlier in the story, his first instinct when he read Naaman's letter was to assume it was a trap, not to trust the God of Abraham and Moses who had done far harder things.
Brian identified three specific places where Naaman had his cat turned the wrong way. He was wrong about the how, he had a picture in his mind of exactly how the healing was supposed to happen. He was wrong about the where, the Jordan was beneath his expectations. And he had a bad case of the what ifs, cycling through all the ways it might have gone differently. What Naaman did not get wrong was whether God could heal him at all. That was never in doubt for him, and Brian said the text gives no indication Naaman ever wavered on that point.
Naaman's officers talked him down, pointing out that if Elisha had asked something difficult, he would have done it, so why not try something simple. He went to the Jordan, dipped seven times, and his skin came back like a child's. Brian applied those same three failure points directly to the congregation: letting go of the how means not turning God into a genie by dictating the terms of how he answers, letting go of the where means giving him access to every room in the house not just the ones that are already in trouble, and letting go of the what ifs means dropping the bargaining, the "I'll get serious after this ski season" kind of negotiating.
Brian brought the Asbury revival into it as a live example. No famous speakers, no famous worship bands, a shaky livestream, a small Kentucky town, a chapel service that went two weeks past its scheduled end. He said that revival is exactly what he means by simple but costly. It costs something to say that was a genuine move of God when it did not look the way you expected it to look, or happen where you expected it to happen.
He also addressed gender identity directly, saying that God made humanity male and female, that nothing in scripture has changed that, and that the complexity people are asked to buy into culturally is a pressure to trade God's simple, unchanging ways for what Brian called a "complexity currency." He named transhumanism, artificial intelligence, and religious tolerance as other places the same pressure shows up. The cost of standing with what is simple and scriptural, he said, is only going to go up. The invitation he left open was the same one Naaman eventually took: repent, soften, turn around, and be healed.

Lord Jesus, we invite you into this place. We come expecting about what you're gonna do today in us and through us. There's never been a gathering like this of these exact hearts coming together to worship you today. This is a unique holy moment and we just acknowledge that right now. Whatever you did yesterday, it's ashes.
We just ask you come. Come, come, come in a new way today. In Jesus name, amen. Let's stand together since we have the room to. Let's just worship him, invite him.

Remove the distractions from my mind today to freely worship you, fully worship you that we would experience your presence because it's in your presence that we're changed. You can be moving and working all around us and us not even be aware of it because our heart is distracted. Lord, show us how you're moving today. Let's tell you you're worthy.

I love that line that you're more than enough, not just enough, you're more than enough. What is it that you're looking for or seeking today? He's more than enough. All you have to do is trust him. I'm just gonna share just a quick testimony then I'm gonna ask someone else to come up and share and, you know, the Bible says that we defeat the enemy two ways.
Right? Yeah. You can sit down if you want to. We defeat the enemy two ways. Does anybody know what the first way is?
By the? Of the lamb. Blood of the lamb. The? And the word of our testimony.
So it is so important that we share our testimonies. One, how we met Jesus, what he did in our lives, who we were before, how we met him, and then how we were changed. But also the testimonies as we walk where we see him do mighty and amazing things. Right, Clay? And so I was just gonna I shared this last week, but for anyone who wasn't here, two Sundays ago, so two weeks ago, after service, we met in this back room and we did a prayer time and the prayer wasn't for me.
I was there praying. I was being a prayer. And I was just in the room praying in the spirit, writing down what the holy spirit was doing. And for about a year and a half, I've had, like, issues with my hip. And I started running again a year and a half ago, and it's just gotten worse and worse and worse.
Excruciating pain. Maybe the last six months, both hit so badly that sitting from standing was just like unbearable. I mean, would just cringe and I would like try to pretend like hope no one could see me and it was just it got to the point where I was like, I can't do this anymore. I I just was in tears constantly. So during that prayer session, we didn't even I didn't mention my hips, you know, and my mind was like, well, we're not here to pray for me, you know.
And two hours of sitting on the back couch any other time, every single time. This wasn't like one time or every, you know, every time I would stand. Just, I mean, I thought that my legs were gonna give out and so I would like, know, oh, pretend I was like picking up a book and like, uh-huh, I'll be right there, you know. And stood up off that couch after two hours of sitting which would have normally been just excruciating. I stood up, I had zero pain and I thought, is this a fluke?
And the presence of the Lord had been so thick in that prayer meeting. So I went out here and I walked down the steps in zero pain. Well, the true test will be when I get out of my car because that's always when it hurts the worst. And went down to my car and was with Gretchen and I finally was like, Lord, should I say something? Like, if I don't say something, is it not real?
You know, like pick up your mat and walk. And so I said to Gretchen, I was like, okay, I know you know my hip situation. I don't have any pain and I don't not sure what's happening out there. They've got some I've got something going on outside. But we drove and I told her that.
I said, you know, I I don't have any pain. I think the Lord might have healed me in the if we get to lunch and I can get out of this car with no pain, like, that's huge. We got to Sidewinders and I was like, swung my leg out, zero pain. And it's been two full weeks. I have not had one second of pain in my hips.
So I, you know, I don't know how the Lord works sometimes or why or when and we just have to trust him because, I mean, I was like, but I kind of felt bad. Was like, but Lord, we were here to pray for Gretchen, you know, or like. And so just be encouraged that in his presence anything is possible. That's right. Anything like, he might reveal things to you that you need to be healed from that you don't even know.
He might bubble up some unforgiveness. He might, you know, show you some root or he might just come through and he might just heal you because he's good. So however he works, we just trust him. I'm just gonna hang this up really quick and I'm gonna invite Gretchen and Jacob to come up here and just share.
We just kinda wanna talk about another event, another situation that happened
and Related.
Related. Here recently and and how good god is, you know, and his healing and his mercy and through obedience. And so she had a she was in that prayer session that time.
It was for me.
It was for her.
I two weeks ago, I was diagnosed with Graves' disease. I was very scared, and it affects your heart. I was having heart issues. My levels were terrible, and I kinda was just like, okay. I'm just gonna send out a text to some people and just be like, I need help.
I can't do this by myself. And so Lissa, like, immediately was like, okay, we're gonna do this. We're gonna have this prayer session. We're gonna do this. We're this.
And so we had that prayer session two weeks ago that Lissa was healed. And I think Amanda had asked me in our first prayer session, what are you believing for? And I said, well, I'm hoping to believe that I will be healed. But if I was being honest, I think I had a feeling that like other people could be healed and Jesus could do that for other people, but not for me. And so I think Lissa being healed in that first session was like a huge faith builder for me because I was like, okay, there is something happening in these sessions.
So like maybe something can happen for me. And so then we did a second one the week after and then you were called to fast.
Yeah. So after that session, I wasn't in it. I wasn't there for that when she was doing it. She was working. She told me all about it.
And it was amazing time, it sounded like. And I just know at that moment, I was going through kind of a lull in my walk, and, you know, going through some hard times myself and just, you know, not not where I wanted to be with god. Just not living right, living in some sin that I need to work out in my own life. And I just remember sitting there. I was praying to God, and I was like, what do you want me to do?
What do I need to change? You know? How can I be different? You know? What do you want me to see?
And, he just told me to fast. That's what he told me to do. And I didn't didn't know why. I didn't know what it was for. He was like, just fast.
I was like, okay. Well, then I'm gonna start fasting, and we'll see where it goes. And so started fasting, no food, just water kinda thing. And three days later We went to the hospital.
We went to the doctor, the specialist in Idaho Falls, and he was very good doctor, but he was very doom and gloom. It was like, this is gonna be a really long process. You're on this medication. I don't know if this medication is gonna work. It takes a really long time.
You're gonna have to do blood work every four weeks. I would actually rather give you radioactive iodine or take your thyroid out. And I was like, hard no. And then I had to go and get like an ultrasound and like, you know, and I was just thinking to myself, it's hard to believe you're healed when you're having physical symptoms or, like, when you're going to doctors and they're telling you all this stuff. And and I was like, how am I going to talk about this?
So when they were doing the ultrasound, I just kept I was laying there and I just kept being like, I'm healed. I'm healed. I'm healed. I just that was like I just kept repeating it. And then Joy texted me and asked me how it went and I was like, okay, this is where I can practice talking about it.
And so I said, well, the doctor said this, this, and this, and this, this is gonna be a long road, it's gonna be this. And I said, but he doesn't know my god. And I was like, that feels like a way that I can talk about what they're saying, but then I can also like talk about what I'm believing for. And we got home and an hour later, the doctor called and said, you're not gonna believe us, but your levels are completely fine.
Hallelujah. Yeah.
He was like, you know, your TSH is still low. That takes a long time to build up, though. So but your other levels are completely fine, and the medicine must be working really fast. I wasn't expecting that. And I was like, Tee hee.
So I ran upstairs and told him
And I was in the shower at the time. And at that moment, I was thinking, oh, Lord, what? I was starving.
I was just I was gonna die.
We had just got back Yeah.
My levels were low.
We just got back from Idaho Falls, and it's very hard to go to Idaho Falls without eating.
I don't realize that.
And so I was in the shower. Was like, oh, Lord. Just give me a sign of what you want me to do. Because at that point, I had decided, okay, I'm gonna go to Tuesday. Okay?
I'm gonna make this a seven day fast, and we'll just keep going. And I was like, Lord, just give me a sign of what you want me to do. You know? What do you if you want me to was like, I don't know if I can make it to work and what I do in this state because I was in that fog, you know, that fasting fog you get. And I was like, I don't know if I can work like this, you know, and do my job.
And it's like, Lord, what do you want me to do? What what were you trying to show me? You know? And so it was just continuous prayer. And right as I'm in the shower, she comes busting in the door.
And I
healed. Yeah. Like, I'm healed.
You know? And so, you know, we just praised God for that and that was that was the answer. In that immediate moment, he gave me the answer. He's like, okay, you can break your fast now. You know, we had a great time after that at Shabbat with with our family and everything and yeah.
But I think the key point in a lot of this is just obedience. That's right. It's listening to what God's telling you to do for healing and believing and having faith in that, but it also takes obedience. I mean, you can you can think it in your mind and you can understand it and read the bible verses that talk about healing and all of that. But it's not until you listen to what God's telling you specifically.
It's not this story is for us. This is what God did for us. Each of you have your own story of what God wants to tell you and wants you to listen to, and then you will be healed. Then you will be healed. So it's it's it's obey and listen and hear him and look for what he's using those moments for in the obedience and in the moment, not thinking about, well, I'll be healed in the future or I need this in the future.
Look at where he has you right now in this moment and what why you're in that moment. Maybe it's to reach a doctor. Maybe it's to go to the doctor and talk to him about Jesus. You know? That could be the whole purpose of getting sick in the first place.
You don't know. God's ways are so much higher. Just like I didn't know why I was fasting. I didn't know why he said do that. I didn't even know it was related.
You know, we had been praying for healing and all that, but I didn't know the fast was related, but it is. And God's ways are just so much higher. And so don't discount the moment you're in right now. You have a purpose. You have a purpose for being here right now in this room.
Everything has a purpose. And so you look for God's ways and what he's using you you individually for right now to be healed.
I think too it's like remembering that we're in a spiritual battle. That when things happen, rally your troops. I've talked about it before, I have such a struggle with feeling like I'm a burden, but I was like, nope, I need to rally the troops and get your loved ones and pray and fast for each other and, like, anything is possible like this on sis. So I love it. Yeah.
Hallelujah.
I don't I mean, we I feel like we should just be like, who else? Let's go. Let's go. I just felt like while they were sharing that just, you know, and what we sang right now, just ask yourself and ask the Lord, like, I thinking like Christian was thinking? Like, well, the Lord can do that for someone else, but, you know, not not for me.
For whatever reason, we feel like we fall short or, you know, we gotta get some stuff together or, you know, I've only been walking with the Lord this long or I don't even know if I have faith for healing. I just feel like the Lord's like, yeah, that's all about you. And really, it's just all about him. Clay, did you have something to share? Use that so that everyone on the live stream can hear you.
That's right. It's been it's been a great year. I
love it. Who else? Anybody else? Love it. I was just gonna say that.
So I don't know how this works, but there's certain seasons. It I don't know if it's open heart moments. I don't know if it's, like, obedience lining up. I don't know if it's just, like, some wave of how the Lord is working, but I do really feel like, oh my gosh. I almost forgot.
So Brian was shoveling. He keep kept texting me this morning. Don't forget to share. Don't forget to share. So he had been shoveling and shoveling and shoveling and shoveling and for years whenever he does something repetitive like that, he gets horrible tennis elbow or that tendonitis.
Sometimes it takes like months, months, months to go away. So that happened on Thursday and it was he was in so much pain. I mean, like, every time he'd stand up, I could see him, like, barely straightening his arm. And he's not here today because it's our daughter, Salas, spring break, and they've been planning planning planning to go on this climbing trip. And so he's like, no.
No. Not this tendonitis now, you know. And Gretchen had just come in for Shabbat screaming of her healing, and I was like, and so we were like, well, let's just pray and have it be healed. And so he just texted us this morning and they're headed out climbing for the first time. And what did he say?
He said there's a tiny tinge, but he says it's like 98% healed. And so I'm I just feel like the Lord is like moving in this specific way right now. Not that he's not always moving in this way. But I feel like there's a wave that we I want to make sure to catch and just jump in the vein of what he's doing. So if today you want someone it doesn't have to be this big, you know, demonstration or fancy words, just that we are standing and saying, Lord, we believe that you can heal me.
Lord, I believe you can heal. I believe you can heal. And so let's just take a minute and it's just like Gretchen said, rally the troops. If you're sitting in this place right now and you need physical healing for something, will you just be bold and will you just raise your hand and I guarantee you as many people are gonna stand up and just go pray a prayer of healing over you. Nothing fancy.
I mean, I didn't even ask for prayer, but I just got in the presence of the Lord and I was believing for Gretchen's healing a thousand percent. There was nothing in me that doubted that the Lord couldn't heal her. And so I think just by my faith for him healing someone else, he just came and did that for me. So who needs physical healing today? Alright.
So Gretchen, Jacob, go over here. Kat, Lanisha, turn around there. Who else? Raise your hand if you need prayer for physical healing. Okay?
Clay, go lay hands on Renee right over there. Who else? Anybody else raise their hand? Everybody has someone back there? Darcy, Joy, will you go pray for Darcy?
Oh, I hear you. It doesn't have to be fancy. You just say, Lord, we believe you. Just take a minute and just be still before him. Ask the Holy Spirit to come and just reveal to you how to pray.
Just take a minute. And it's not too late. You can still raise your hand just so you know. Just pray in faith.
Just
let your faith rise. You. Oh, we just have your way in this place and we just wanna get in your presence and ride that wave. Maybe for some of us, we've never even thought about your miraculous healing or dared to ask And your word says that all we need to have is faith the size of a mustard seed. So right now, Lord, see our hearts.
We're expectant for cool testimonies, because of who you are, of who you are, not because we deserve it or we've earned it, but because of who you are. And we just like I just see this picture of like a looks in my mind like a pros and cons list. And there's these things in some people's minds and we all do this like, well, Jesus could do this and this and this, but this is in this column of impossible. And I feel like just as you just get in his presence, he's just taking those things and just putting them in the possible. I don't know how.
I see owning a home in Jackson. In someone's mind, it's like, just in the impossible list. I know the numbers. Like, the Lord's just like, I own cattle on a thousand hill. I can do anything.
That's right. I can do anything. So he's just Lord, we just ask right now that you would take those things that in our minds, we've said, yeah, I I think the Lord could do this and this and this, but these things, these are in the impossible. So Lord, would you move those? Raise our faith to move those from impossible to possible because we trust you.
Because we trust you. And those things, Lord, we know are gonna be you because on paper, they do look impossible in our natural mind. But, Lord, we just trust you with them. We trust that you're always doing something. And change our heart question to Lord, what are you doing?
Just like Jacob said, what are you doing in this in this situation if I haven't seen it move? Well, what are you doing in it? Teach me I wanna stay close to you, Lord. I wanna be in that wave. I wanna be in that wave.
One time Brian and I went to this prayer training and I remember one of the you know how when you go to like a conference or something, you come home and usually there's like one thing that was awesome. You know, it's like, kinda some stuff in there, but there's like, oh, there's that one thing. We spent this whole weekend at a prayer training and the one thing that I walked away with was that the prayer leader said, if you pray for someone for healing, what a lot of believers do is they pray but then they don't ask. Do you feel any different? Did the Lord do anything?
Because we're afraid that the answer is gonna be no. But then again, that has something to do with us. Right? We're taking the power away from the Lord. Like, we're not responsible to heal someone.
The Lord does that. We just step out in obedience and faith. So we're not responsible when we don't see something physical happen in that moment. It's on him. So I felt like that was a huge conviction to me, like, to not ask in that moment, like, do did you feel like the Lord showed you anything?
Do you feel any different? So I'm just gonna be obedient. And in that prayer, did anybody experience anything or feel like Holy Spirit reveals something or feel like they received any kind of physical healing? Alright. Can't wait.
Can't wait. I feel like it's one of those things like when I stood up, I was like, So Lord, we just pray right now for whatever those prayers were, whatever went forth. We pray you'd give us those little, is this that?
And I will just actually say that in those prayer sessions, like I didn't see really much about my healing. I saw a lot about other things like that God was speaking to me a lot about other things, things that had happened in the past like like I was seeing a lot of images, and I just had to believe that that we were praying for my healing, and those things were about my healing even though they didn't seem related. So if someone prayed over you just now and you saw something that didn't seem related to your healing, that doesn't mean that it's not. You just have to believe that that is. Mhmm.
And a lot of times, God is patient. Sometimes he works slower than we think and slower than we want. But God's using this moment for a reason to build your faith. That's how you build faith. It's through patience and through the fire.
You don't build faith just instantly. It takes time. It's building. And also, I just felt through that moment. I I felt a call to repentance.
Like, that's what we should be. When we're in the presence of God, that lets us see our imperfections. We see where we need to repent. And so that's what let's just pray right now over that. Let's pray.
Father, we ask that you show our hearts, show us right now where we failed you. Show us our sins. Bring them to the forefront of our minds right now, father god. Show us everything in our life that we need repentance of or we need to call you and give up Yes, sir. And lose.
Maybe it's a lifestyle we're living. Maybe it's just things we've done, father god. But we have failed you. Father, we are imperfect, and we need your grace and your mercy to fall over us.
And we
give up the things that we wanna do. We give up our lives for you. We walk as you, Jesus. We give up the things we want inside of us and our selfish desires and the things the world tells us to be and how we need to act in our pride and our selfishness and our wants. It's not about us, father.
It's about you. It's about your kingdom come, father god. So we want to be healed, father. And we know that to be healed, we have to give up of ourselves and give up of our flesh and these bodies, father. We are not of this kingdom.
We are the kingdom of the kingdom to come, father God. We trust in that. We have faith in that. We repent where we failed, Father God, and we look forward to your power that's coming and gonna move in our lives each and individually. And we trust in that.
And we're gonna go and go from this point forward. We're gonna live as if we are healed. Yes. We're gonna live in that faith that we know because your word says that you work all things for the good of those who love you. And we love you, and we trust in that word because your word is truth.
You can't lie, father. And we know that your word says that you can heal and says that you will heal. And so we go from this point forward. We live as if we are healed. Yes.
And we have patience and we have trust and we trust in your grace and your mercy, father. We love you.
Amen. Amen. God is good. Please, please, as he reveals stuff to you or shows you stuff, text me because that's how the lord's gonna build the rest of our faith when we hear that testimony. So today's gonna look just a little bit different.

Hi there, tribe fam. So glad to be with you again. This is week three of turn the cat around. And today, we're gonna be diving into a really interesting story of the bible. If you are just joining us for this series, turn the cat around, you might be thinking, what in the world are you talking about?
Well, there was a pastor mentor of we were living in Oklahoma that a number of us sat under for numbers and he would say this, whenever he would deliver a a hard truth from God's word, he would always say, and if that turned if that pets your fur the wrong way, well, you just better turn your cat around. Meaning, that God's word, God's ways, God's principles and his precepts, they don't change. They are eternal and everlasting and they are perfect just the way that they are. And whenever we encounter something that we don't like or that we disagree with or is is troubling to us in a way that's like petting our fur the wrong way, well, he's not gonna change. So, who else else who else is gonna change?
It's gotta be us. So, we need to turn our cat around so that as the Lord pets us with his truth, with his presence, with his provision, with his ways, with his character, with his word, if we turn the cat around so that his ways pet us the right way, ah, it just feels so much better. And so that's why we're talking about this series. In preparation for this series, I've been chewing on this for some time now, I feel like the Holy Spirit whispered to my heart and what he said was, in the days ahead, the leadership of Jesus will be less complicated, but it will be more costly. In the days ahead, the leadership of Jesus will be less complicated but it will be more costly.
It's going to be more challenging, not to interpret or to discern the will of the Lord, but to actually step out and do it, to to plant a flag or to take a stand or to live according to it. It's going to cost Christ followers more and more, which if your cat is turned the wrong way, it's really easy to get washed along with the current with the flow. I know I know I'm mixing my metaphors right now, but I know that you're with me. But if you are facing, if the fur of your heart is facing the right way in the way that that is God's way, it's going to be increasingly obvious. It'll be increasingly challenged in the days ahead.
It's going to be more costly. So now is the time to turn the fur of our cat around. Now is the time to turn our cat around. Now is the time to find out which way the Lord pets and to orient to our lives so that we are in step and in sync with him. Do it now before it becomes more and more and more costly.
Does that make sense? And and I'm gonna get into a few specifics. I might step on some toes here with this with today's message. With that in mind, let's get into God's word together. If you have your bible with you, would you turn to the book of second Kings?
Second Kings. While you're turning to the book of second Kings, by way of quick review, if you remember week one, we talked about how when we turn our hearts around, we'll live. God says, do you think I like to see wicked people perish? Of course not. I only want them to turn from their wicked ways and live.
Then last week on week two, we dealt with our identity. Remember, we were talking about Gideon who was hiding in the wine press trying to thresh wheat in the wine press. We talked about our identity. Don't let anybody else tell you who you are other than God alone. He made you.
Right? He's omniscient. He's perfect. He has foreknowledge. He knows how things are gonna play out even if it's not working out so great right now.
Let's turn the the cat around when it comes to our identity and listen to who God says that we are. If you remember the the the the punch line from last week's message was an excerpt, a quote, a direct quote from an angel of the Lord that said, mighty man of God. You're a mighty warrior, a hero. And on at one of our services this past week, I was saying that, and and I don't wanna embarrass them, but there was at least one individual who I don't know that I had seen or met before at one of our tribe services, but you could just tell, man, that guy, I I don't know his backstory or the whatever lies he had been listening to or believing himself or even told over himself about his identity, but those words were like a sledgehammer on his heart just cracking off weeks, months, I don't know, maybe even years of just old crusty stuff and to to see him encounter the Lord through the truth of that verse was so special. Were were you did you see that individual, Jacob?
Oh, man. It was it was it was a really cool moment. So today, let's position our hearts so that the Lord can speak to us through the story that we're going to read in second Kings chapter five. We're gonna read verses one through 15. I've got it right here in my Bible, so why don't I go ahead and read the story of Naaman the leper.
Second Kings chapter five, must start in verse one. The king of Aram had great admiration for Naaman, the commander of his army, because through him, the Lord had given Aram great victory. But though but though Naaman was a mighty warrior, he suffered from leprosy. Oh, I got it. Right there.
Okay. Quick pause. Who had given Naaman and Naaman was an Assyrian. He wasn't he wasn't an Israelite. He wasn't a Jew.
He wasn't a Hebrew. He was an Assyrian army captain, an enemy of Israel. But it says that God had given him great victory. Interesting. But that he also suffered from leprosy.
Oh, there's a lot to unpack there. But just I don't know. I just feel like you could pick that up, rub it around, rub the dirt off, and find some really good stuff just right there. Let's continue on down the trail. At this time, the Aramean raiders had invaded the land of Israel, and among their captives was a young girl who had been given to Naaman's wife as a maid.
One day the girl said to her mistress, I wish my master would go and see the prophet in Samaria. He would heal him of his leprosy. So Naaman told the king what the young girl from Israel said. Then the king says, go and visit the prophet, the king of Aram told him. How oh, okay.
We're not gonna we're not gonna take a long stop here, but let's let's talk about the the the tragedy, the heart wrenching tragedy of a young girl being ripped from the arms of her parents in a raid. What was that? Like, were they killed? Were they oh. And then the treatment of this girl, this little girl, like, oh, there's just so much that that we just don't know.
And then she says, I wish my master would go and see the prophet. He would heal him. And there's no other discussion. How what's the length of time? Does Naaman does Naaman set his sword down and immediately go into the court of the king?
Does he chew on it for weeks or for months? Is it an ongoing conversation? Does he sit the girl down and say, now tell me more about this prophet and who is he and what's his deal? All those details that I would love to know are left out of the story. All we see is in verse four, Naaman goes straight to the king.
And then the king says, we'll go and visit the prophet. I'll send a letter of introduction for you to take to the king of Israel. So Naaman started out carrying as gifts 750 pounds of cereal. Must be hungry. 750 pounds of silver, a 150 pounds of gold, 10 sets of clothing, and a letter to the king of Israel that said, with this letter, I present my servant Naaman.
I want you to heal him of his leprosy. Wow. That's yeah. It's quick and to the point. When the king of Israel read the letter, he tore his clothes in dismay and said, this man sends me a leper to heal?
Am I God that I can give life and take it away? And then then his mind goes to a dark place. I can see that he's just trying to pick a fight with me. Oh, alright. So I know I know I know.
We're we're reading the text, but there's just so much good stuff here. I gotta call a pause. What about the king of Israel? What about his heart? Did he not need to turn his cat around?
Did he not serve the God of miracles? The God who for of Isaac and Jacob and the God of Abraham, the God who rescued Israel out of bondage and captivity in Egypt. And when this problem gets set before him, all he thinks about is his own resources and his mind already is starting to go down a negative loop. He's just trying to trick me. He's baiting me into a fight.
Uh-oh. That's it. That's it. We're in trouble. Man, this guy, the the king of Israel, he needed to turn his heart around.
The cat the cat of his heart? The heart of his cat. You know? When Elisha, the man of God, heard that the king of Israel had torn his clothes in dismay, he sent this message to him. Why are you so upset?
Like, dude, turn your cat around. Send Naaman to me and he will learn that there is a true prophet here in Israel. Man, I love Elisha's, like, confidence, his boldness, his faith. Whoo. Verse nine.
So Naaman went with his horses and chariots and waited at the door of Elisha's house. And I believe from the text, is intended that that the reader pick out some of these tease out some of these details to to show that Naaman was trying to make a big deal of his arrival. Here I am, mister big deal arriving at the house of Elisha. But Elisha sent a messenger out to him with this message, go go away, wash in it says he says, go and wash yourself seven times in the Jordan River. Then your skin will be restored and you will be healed of your leprosy.
What was Elisha doing? Was he busy? Was he like baking? Was he like in the middle of a a intense board game or something? Was he playing Catan with his other like prophet buddies?
I don't know. I don't know. But he just sends his servant out. Naaman became very angry and stalked away. I thought he would certainly come out to meet me, he said.
I expected him to wave his hand over the leprosy to call in the name of the Lord his God and heal me. Aren't there rivers of Damascus and Abana and the Paphar better than any of the rivers in Israel? Why shouldn't I wash in them and be healed? So Naaman turned away in a rage. There was an invitation for Naaman to turn his cat around, but he didn't do it.
He stomped off in a rage. Can you see that right there? Verse 13. But his officers tried to reason with him and said, sir, if the prophet had told you to do something very difficult, wouldn't you have done it? So you should certainly obey him when he says simply, oh, I love that.
When he says when he says simply, how many times I know. I'm calling another pause. How many times do we make such a big deal out of the instructions and leadership of the Lord? We make it so complicated with all of our caveats and and yeah, buts and and and is that really you where following the Lord can be just simple. When he said simply just go and wash and be cured.
Verse 14. So Naaman went down to the Jordan River, and I can just picture him. He's mad. He might even be grousing a little bit. And dipped himself seven times as the Lord as the man of God had instructed him.
And his skin became as healthy as the skin of a young child, and he was healed. Then Naaman and his entire party went back to find the man of God. They stood before him and Naaman said, now I know that there is no other God in all of the world except in Israel. We'll pause right there in verse 15. May the Lord bless the reading of his word today.
So you probably saw it, but if we were to look at the life of Naaman in that particular story, where we always wanna start is by considering where was Naaman's cat facing. Then, what was the invitation from the Lord to turn his cat around? And then, did he do it? What was the result? And then, what's the takeaway for us?
That's really our our conversation that we're gonna have today. So with that in mind, let's look in the story and can you spot, can you see where Naaman's cat was facing the wrong way? It's right here in verse 11. But Naaman became angry and walked away. I thought he would certainly come out to meet me, he said.
I expected him to wave his hand over the leprosy and calling the name of the Lord his God and heal me. Then, not only is he mad about what Elisha didn't do, then what did the rivers do to deserve this? Then he turns his scorn onto the rivers. Aren't the rivers of Damascus and Abana and the Piphar better than any of the rivers in Israel? Why shouldn't I go and wash in them and be healed?
So Naaman turned away and went in a rage. Man, can you see it? Can you let let's drill down into this specifically. Here's where Naaman had his cat turned the wrong way. Number one, with the how.
I Naaman says, I thought that he would come out and do it this way. So Naaman had a preconceived notion of how he thought that Elisha was going to respond to his need for healing. So Naaman got it wrong with the how because we see from the story that Elisha didn't even come outside. Here's the second way that Naaman had his cat turned the wrong way. Where?
Naaman scoffed when Elisha's servant told him to go and wash in the Jordan. The Jordan, that's that's where you want this supposed amazing heal? Like, I don't understand. Like like, maybe maybe Naaman was, you know, he had a lot of yes men around him because he had this terrible skin disease. Here he is given the cure and he is prideful, arrogant.
He is he's he's gruff. He's mad. Wear the Jordan? I'm not gonna go to the Jordan. I guess you don't wanna be healed then.
Then thankfully, some of the people in his company are like, but but but sir, notice they use the word sir, don't wanna get on his bad side. Sir, well, if it were hard and complex, wouldn't you do that? But this is so simple. Why not try it? And then the last thing is the what ifs.
Naaman had a bad case of the what ifs. Well, he had a he had this preconceived notion in his mind for how all of this was gonna play out. And when it wasn't playing out as he intended, as he thought it would, then the what ifs come out. Well, well, what if Elisha does come out? What if Elisha were to wave his hand around me?
What if I were to, you know, like like dance naked in the moonlight on one foot? Like, what do you want me to do? What if? What if? What if?
What if? And instead the plan of God was just so simple. Here's one thing that I don't I don't wanna make Naaman out to be such a terrible guy. There's one thing that Naaman his cat was turned the right way completely when it comes to this one area. What was that?
He never once doubted that God could heal him. That was not even a question. I wonder what it was about that little servant girl. What did she say? Was there an anointing of God on her life?
Had he somehow some way experienced the favor of the God of Israel before? Like like that little detail that we got at the beginning of the story. Somehow, someway that was not even an issue in Naaman's mind if God could heal him. He was absolutely convinced because there's no evidence in the text that gives us any indication that Naaman wavered on his belief that God could heal him. So we gotta give credit to Naaman for having his cat turned around at least in that one area.
Okay. So we've looked at Naaman. We've looked at how God was petting, what what God did, you know, through Elisha and the servant and what he told him to do. We have seen how Naaman's cat was turned the wrong way because Naaman was thinking about the how. Well well well, I I wanted him to do it this way.
We Naaman was thinking about the where, the Jordan. I don't I don't wanna go down to the Jordan. And then Naaman had the what ifs. Those were those three areas that Naaman had his cat turned the wrong way. Well, we know how the story plays out.
Naaman lets go of the how and says, alright. Even his his friends had to talk him into it. Just just it's not that complicated. Let's just try it. So Naaman had to let go of the how, he had to let go of the where, and he had to let go of the what ifs.
What was the result? Incredible, miraculous healing. Now for us, how does the story of Naaman apply to us? Well, these are these are some great lessons from Naaman's life that we can see for us right here. Is there an area of your heart, an area of your life that you have an expectation of how you want God to work this situation out.
Excuse me. Number one, you gotta let go of the how. You gotta let go of the how. Just think. If you got to tell God how you wanted him to come through for you in whatever ways that you might have need.
Do you know how bad you'd mess that up? And and and it makes God really nothing more than like a genie in a lamp. Here's how I want you to do it, God. If the words that are coming out of my mouth are stinging you a little bit because you are becoming aware that you have had a habit or a pattern or in this season of you telling God how you want him to do whatever it is that you're asking him to do, that's your fur being petted the wrong way. Repent.
You gotta let go of the how. Number one. Number two, just like Naaman, you gotta let go of the where. Well, here's where I thought you would be involved in my life. Here's where I need your help here but I don't want your help here.
If you think of your life like a house, Jesus comes and knocks on the door of your heart. You open maybe you open the door, maybe you crack it open. Oh, it's Jesus. Maybe because of whatever is in your past, you squeeze out the front door and say, well, let's just let's just have a visit on the front porch. Okay.
Alright. When you become a Christian, the the the whole idea of becoming a Christian is you open up the door of your heart, and he comes into your house, and he has access. You give him access to every single room and closet and attic and basement in your entire home. You have to let go of the where. Meaning, I would allow God into this area of my life, let's say finances, because money is so tight this week or this month.
Money is so tight like, Lord, I I need I need help. I'm calling I'm crying out to you for a miracle. I'll let you go here, but now you're knocking on my heart. You wanna go where? And you wanna go into this area of my you wanna go into this room?
You wanna look into this room? Oh, no. No. No. No.
That room is just for me that I go into, like, Fridays and Saturdays. You and then I go into your and then you can come in to my room on Sundays, but this is my Friday and Saturday room. You can guys, not only do we have to let go of the how, turn your cat around, but you have to let go of the where, where God will move, where God will be involved. I understand that that there could be areas of your life and heart that are protected because they have experienced pain and rejection and and deep hurt. And as a as a self protecting mechanism, it's challenging for you to let go of the where, but you can trust him.
Like Naaman, he had no doubt in God's power to heal. Trust God to bring healing to every area of your life. You have to let go of the how, you have to let go of the where, and then the last one is you have to let go of the what ifs, and that's the bargaining. Well, what if what if I give my whole life to you after I get done with this ski season? What if I get really serious about reading my bible once I get over this cold?
I don't know. The the what ifs. What if? What if? That's that's a bargaining that we try to do with God and we can't bargain with God.
He only pets one way. The best thing that we can do is surrender. And even now, if the Holy Spirit is speaking something to your heart that that that my words are uncomfortable to you, that's a sign that God is petting you this way and right now your cat is turned the wrong way. The best thing that you can do is turn your cat around. How do I turn my cat around?
You've gotta let go of the how? Repent. You've gotta let go of the where? Repent. You've gotta let go of the what ifs.
Repent. How do I repent? You you you get on your knees physically and as a posture of your heart and you say, I'm so sorry. Please forgive me. And then you turn and walk the other way.
Remember earlier when I said that I feel like the Holy Spirit whispered to my heart and said, in the days ahead, the leadership of Jesus will be less complicated but more costly? Let's think let's think about a couple of really practical examples. Most recently, it's now I'm not sure what's going on because I haven't heard much news, but we're we're all familiar by now with the revival that went on for several weeks in Asbury in a small Kentucky town. Well, here's a great example of of in the days ahead, the leadership of Jesus will be less complicated but more costly. What is complicated about a group of college students gathering together for a chapel service that happens to go half an hour, an hour, and then two weeks over its scheduled time.
No famous speakers, no famous, worship bands, prayer, repentance, forgiveness, salvation, joy, miracles happening. These are just some of the reports that are coming out. But if you have an expectation of how, well, that's not how revival's supposed to look. It's so simple. The leadership of Jesus is not very complicated, but it's more costly.
Meaning, would you say that that was a genuine move of the Lord? Might cost you something because it didn't look like what you thought it would look like. It might cost you something to say, wow. Yep. That was a genuine move of God.
And then what about the the where? Aren't revivals supposed to, like, take place, like, in, you know, big urban cities or factories or or shouldn't shouldn't something have happened as a more predominant precursor to this event? Where? In little Arkansas, like and so you might need to turn your cat around. It's so simple to follow the leadership of Jesus.
It's not very complicated. It's just in a simple, a small town in Arkansas, but it's it costs you more. It costs more because it was just livestreamed on a shaky little camera if you didn't get to get down there and see it yourself. It costs more. Whew.
Alright. Let's let's wade into this one. In the days ahead, the leadership of Jesus will be less complicated, but it will be more more costly. For just a second, let's talk about gender and gender identity. Yep.
We're gonna talk about it, but for just a second. The world is getting so complicated when it comes to something that is so very simple. We've been filling out applications. We I know. I know.
It's Lissa. Has been working with Kai to fill out applications for college and as you're entering in the basic information when it comes to gender, you click that, you get a drop down menu and you just scroll and scroll and scroll and scroll through the different options. There are myriad of options now to describe your gender. This is exactly what I mean by when I say the days ahead the leadership of Jesus will be less complicated. He talked about it thousands of years ago in the bible.
God created man in his image and he made them as what? Male and female. There's nothing that's been added to the scripture that makes it more complicated or or what makes it complicated is the world that we live in today, trying to fit our contextual, contemporary, cultural milieu into the Bible and that's where things just get so messy. The leadership of Jesus will be less complicated but more costly. Does that make sense in the example that we just used?
It's gonna cost you something to take a stand for the uncomplicated, profound, simple truth of the gospel. We haven't even waded into things like transhumanism, the proliferation of AI, in the growing intelligence of artificial intelligence, this movement of religious tolerance. The world that we step into every day as time goes on is becoming more and more and more complex. And there are people who tell you who would like to tell you that in order to stay with the flow of culture that you must buy into this complexity currency. The more complex you can make things, the better you are.
When the reality is that God's ways have never changed, but they will become increasingly simpler in comparison and in contrast to the way that the world is going. They will be more simple. But as the Holy Spirit has already said, they will be more costly. It will cost you more and more to identify with, to take a stand with, to believe in, to build your life on, to instruct your family, to make business decisions, to make moral decisions according to God's way. It will cost you more.
So today, why not turn your cat around? There's an invitation, an open invitation today to turn your cat around. Repent. If there's a mindset, something that you've been holding on to, and the Holy Spirit is like, you can you can feel like, and you're like, oh, that's so uncomfortable. Just repent.
Turn your heart around. Yield to the Lord. Let me pray for you. Holy Spirit, in the same way that your spirit hovered over the waters at creation and you brought order to chaos, in the same way that you stirred the hearts of men to begin the work and to continue the work of building the second temple after they've come back from exile? As you've stirred my heart towards you so many times, would you stir the hearts of your people?
Empower them. Give them the courage to turn their cat around. Give them the humility to repent and turn back to you, to turn from their wickedness, to turn from their wicked ways, to repent and to live. Lord, there's no greater feeling than when we are being petted by you the right way. That's my prayer for all of our tribe fam here today, that they would repent, turn their cat around just like Naaman did.
He was gruff. He was upset. But, man, he he eventually softened his heart and he turned around. He was healed, and that's my prayer for our tribe fam here today. We pray these things in Jesus' name, the strong son of God.
