What Do I Memorize?
A study guide · May 26, 2025
In one paragraph
On Sunday, Pastor Brian walked Tribe fam through Proverbs 4:20-22, making the case that God's word needs to move from the mind into the heart if it is going to change anything. The sermon grew out of a moment weeks earlier when very few hands went up to the question of how many people had scripture memorized, and Brian said he had been waiting long enough to cool down before bringing it back...
Read together
- James 5:14 quoted to illustrate spiritual weakness, calling elders to pray over the sick
- Proverbs 4:23 guard your heart above all else, the wellspring of life, shared first by Lee then referenced repeatedly by Brian
- Proverbs 4:20-22 main passage for the sermon, pay attention to God's words, let them penetrate deep for life and healing to the whole body
- Philippians 4:6-7 Lee referenced it in his dream word, do not worry about anything, pray about everything, God's peace will guard your hearts and minds
- Psalm 91:1 Lee referenced it, I live in the high place of God and rest under the shadow of his wings
- Romans 12:1-2 do not be conformed to the patterns of this world but be transformed, cited in discussion of memorization and renewal of the mind
- 2 Peter 1:3 we have been given everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of Christ Jesus
- Isaiah 53:5 by his stripes we are healed, cited by Clay in discussion of healing scriptures
- Psalm 103:2-3 cited by Clay regarding healing of diseases
- John 1:14 the word became flesh, quoted with the Message translation that it moved into our neighborhood
- Psalm 1 referenced in closing prayer, roots growing down into living water bearing fruit every season
- Revelation 22:2 referenced in closing prayer, leaves of the tree used for the healing of the nations
- John 11:35 Jesus wept, cited as the shortest verse in the Bible to encourage simple memorization
- Matthew 22:37 love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul and mind, cited in discussion of what to memorize
What was said
- Pick one verse that touches a pain point you are carrying right now and write it on a notecard to carry in your pocket this week.
- Read your chosen verse out loud, then write it down by hand, once each day at the same time every day.
- Text or call one person from Tribe and ask them to check in with you in two weeks to hear you say your verse from memory.
- Ask the Holy Spirit to bring to mind what he wants you to memorize, then sit quietly and write down whatever comes to you.
- Teach your verse to someone, whether a friend, a spouse, or a child, because explaining it to another person helps it sink deeper into your own heart.
Talk about it
- Lee shared a recurring dream about two postures of worship, people on their knees lamenting and people jumping up to shout praise. Which of those postures comes more naturally to you, and what does the other one cost you?
- Pastor Brian talked about the difference between God's word staying in your head versus dropping down into your heart, and said the Pharisees were a case study in what happens when it never makes that move. Where do you think that gap tends to open up in your own life?
- The Hebrew word behind 'listen carefully' in Proverbs 4 carried the image of fully stretching something out, the way you wrestle a fitted sheet onto a king-size bed. What does it actually look like for you to wrestle with a passage rather than just read past it?
- Pastor Brian described moments when a verse seems to leap off the page in a burst of color while everything else stays black and white. Has that happened to you, and if so, what did you do with it afterward?
- Clay asked how you move from memorizing scripture about healing to actually experiencing what it promises, and Christina answered that the body responds to what is in the heart, not just the mind. What do you think the difference is between holding a verse in your mind and having it genuinely rooted in your heart?
