With your presence, come and talk to us. Change us. We tell you we love you as we worship you this morning. Come. Have your spirit hover over this place today. Change us in Jesus' We tell you that this morning, Lord. You're all that we want. Just take a minute and just be still before him this morning in this beautiful, beautiful morning. Just remind yourself of who he is this morning. Just think about that truth this morning. That there's no shadow you won't lie if we ask you. There's no mountain you wouldn't climb coming after us. Maybe some of us today here in this park know that firsthand that he came chasing after you. In his great great love as you were trying to run away, do your own thing. He was just wooing you, wooing you, waiting for you to turn, waiting for you to turn your eyes towards him. If that's you, just thank him this morning. That he never gave up on you and he never has and he never will. And if you find yourself in this park today running, know today that he is wooing you, he is chasing after you, but he's not gonna spin you around. He's calling your name and he's waiting pray with me. Lord, we just ask right now that no matter where we find ourselves today, that we would hear your voice and we would respond to the one who created us, the one who created this beautiful place. And then instead of looking at the creation, we would turn to the creator because it's in your hands that we find our purpose. It's in your hands that you can mold us. So we tell you this morning, we're done. We're done trying to do it our own way. We surrender to you. Light up any shadow in our lives midst the the midst midst the We're Lord, we thank you that these are not just words to a song, but they are truth this morning. They are truth. You are good today. Whatever we find ourselves in today, you are good. You are faithful. Let your mercies pour out new today on each and every one of us no matter how bad we messed up yesterday. Let your mercy pour out today. We thank you for new life. We thank you for second, third, fourth, hundredth chances. That's who you are. Just take a minute and just receive from him this morning. Let him speak to you for a minute before we go into the next kind of worship of digging into his word together. We just be still on this beautiful, beautiful day. Just acknowledge his presence in this place. Let him just show you the beautiful thread of his goodness through your whole life before you were even born. No matter the mountains and valleys, he has been faithful. He has been steady. He has been true to you. It felt like no one else was, He was there. We thank you. Prepare our hearts for what you have for us in your word today. Give us ears to hear what you're speaking to each and every one of us. None of us are here by accident today. None of us. Thank you. We do outdoor service from time to time. Last summer was it last just last summer that we were or two summers ago? It was last summer. It was last summer. Just last summer. We had oh, that's right. We're meeting at the Virginian, and they had an event, so we were sort of forced into the park. So there's some nostalgia about coming to do church in the park. We've had lots of great times here, so it's so great to see all of you that are back here in the park again this summer. Jen and Colin, did you bring a little Selah's helmet today since we're where is she? Tell her I love her. She's she's putting her helmet on? Okay. Speaking of Selah, it's my Selah's birthday Hi. And you just showed up at service today. Alright. Alright. Well, service is still early. Oh, wow. Awesome. Woah. Okay. Yes. That's so great. I'm so glad that you're here. New friends from Pinedale. Yeah. Oh, yeah. With your friendship fingers. I love to see that. We also today is part of a special service that we're having today. Not only are we doing service here, but then right afterwards, we're gonna feed you lunch, which is great. Yes, ma'am. And then we've got baptisms. So that'll be that'll be really cool. What we are doing we'll talk more about this in just a moment. But when a person gets saved, they get a brand new life. When they get baptized in water, it's a picture or a symbol of them dying to their old life. And then when a person receives the baptism of the Holy Spirit, they receive the power to walk out the new life that they've been given. And so Jesus says in his word, go and make disciples and then get them baptized. And so we're so excited to be celebrating water baptism with a few people here today. And if you are at service today and you had not even thought about getting water baptized as a public profession of faith, but you're like, oh, should I get baptized? Well, just let the Lord speak to you throughout the course of our conversation this morning. And then after lunch, before we head down to baptism, just come find me and say, think I need to I think I need to get baptized. And let's just make it happen. We'll figure it out. Alright? There's plenty of water for everybody. We're gonna go down to Flat Creek. What was that one? Of course. In terms of baptism, let me just say this really quick while we're, like, on this on this topic. So for baptism, a lot of people got baptized. A lot of people that come from Christian families, they get baptized, like, as a baby, whether they were dunked or sprinkled or I'm not sure what other options there are. Squirt gun? What? Squirt gun. Squirt gun. And so you're so you may be thinking like, well, I got baptized as a baby. Like, I don't know. Like, Jesus is the leader of my life. I've I've invited him into my heart, but I got baptized as a baby. Do I need to get water baptized? Well, that's great that your parents did that. It's not mentioned anywhere in the Bible about baptizing babies. So it's a it's a nice gesture. And maybe your church has some special meaning and significance behind it that is unrelated to the bible. Okay. Great. But as a grown up, as grown up as you are, when we invite Jesus into our heart, there is an amazing opportunity that we have to make a public declaration. When you get saved, it's a very personal and private decision. It's just between you and Jesus and who else might have been there. But when we get baptized in water, one of the significance and symbols and meanings is that it is a public declaration of faith. And so if you're like, should I? Well, just chew on it and see what the Lord would have you do. Sound good? Hey. Okay. If you have your bible with you this morning, we're gonna turn to a very small little book packed with lots of power in the New Testament called second John. And if you're normally a part of our tribe fam, you'll know that we've been in a series of conversations talking about this idea, but I want to lay a foundation for you. And we're gonna read one verse, and we'll probably go to some others. Second John. And if you are new to digging into your bible, there ain't no shame in this place for going to the very front of your book, looking in the table of contents. Where in the world is second John? And then it'll tell you, and then you can flip over there to it. If you get to the book of Revelation and then the maps, you've gone too far, just hang a left a short little distance. Okay? Second John, we're gonna read just one verse. Second John chapter one verse eight. So John is speaking, and he says this, watch out. Everybody say, watch out. Watch out. Thank you, Lee. Watch out that you do not lose what we have worked so hard to achieve. Be diligent so that you receive your full reward. Everybody say full reward. Full reward. Full reward. So if you call Tribe home and you've been with us for the last few weeks, you are becoming more and more acquainted with this passage as we dig into it deeper and deeper. This is where we're going today. There are two words that immediately jump out to me, and I don't know what words or phrases stand out to you, but this idea of work and reward. Work and reward. Do you see both of those words in that verse? Look in your bible. Watch out that you do not lose what we have worked so hard to achieve. Be diligent so that you will receive your full reward. For just a few moments this morning, we're going to talk about those two words, work and reward. Which one should we talk about first? What do you want to talk about first? Work or reward? Work. Let's yeah. Yeah. Just like like your parents said, before you can go outside and play, you gotta get your homework done. So let's talk about work first. When we, as Protestants, hear that word work, it makes us, like, cringe or tighten up a little bit For hundreds of years, the Protestant branch of the family tree has worked really hard to differentiate themselves, to separate themselves, to be distinguished from our Catholic brothers and sisters. And I don't know if we have any recovering Catholics here this morning. Oh, yeah. They're oh, okay. I I I see those hands. So one of the huge differences between our Catholic brothers and sisters and what we are, our Protestants, we're Protestant Christians, is a doctrine on which a person's salvation, security, getting to live with in heaven with God forever is separate and different from the Catholic faith. How they say we get there is different than what we believe and what the Bible teaches about how to get there. Are you more or less with me? Yeah. Yeah. You're thank you for yeah. You're yeah. You're gonna get your steps in today. So the idea is that many people think, even nonchurchgoers, have this idea that if I'm just a good person, all it takes is being a good person. Then when I die, if there is an afterlife, I'll get to go to heaven and be with God. Well, what's the most of the world things that you just have to what are the two words? Be a good person. If I'm just a good person, then I'll get to go to heaven. Man, do you do you realize and do you see how subjective that is? Mhmm. Like, how what is a good person? By what standard are you measuring your moral goodness? What standards do you use? What standard does the world uses to measure moral goodness? Okay. We can measure some things with this. Okay. What's your name? Hi, Rose. I'm Brian. I see you brought your life jacket today. Are are you wanting to get baptized? Rose, can I borrow you for just a moment? Okay. Alright. So now he this is Rose, and Rose is this tall. We can objectively we can objectively measure her height. We could objectively measure her wingspan. Go ahead, throw them out. Let's see. Okay. Okay. Everything's looking good. Okay. We could even we could even break it down and be like, oh, just how about the, humerus here? I'm looking at Oh my gosh. About ten ten and a quarter inches. It's a great humerus, by the way. So this is an objective standard for measurement. Wouldn't it be great if there were some way to objectively measure a moral standard. Because that's what a person either gets into heaven based upon or gets rejected from heaven based upon. It's not based upon how cute you are, how cute you're dressed this morning. It's not based upon where you live. It's not based upon your race. It's not based upon how much money you have, how much money you give to the church. It's not based upon how politically active you were. It's not based upon There's so many things that people would like to use as their standard for achieving salvation. But now here's one of the problems that's common to all humans, is what we tend to do is not base our moral standing on any kind of objective measure, but we tend to be subjective in evaluating our own morality. Well, I'm a good person. And what do we usually do when it comes to defining or qualifying ourselves as a good person? What do we usually do? What do you think? Compare. That's exactly the word that I was looking for. And who or what do we usually compare ourselves to? Yeah. That's almost too honest for church. Did you hear what he said? So we usually compare ourselves to somebody else. But who do we happen to pick to measure ourselves against? Anybody worse than us. Somebody worse than us. Okay. Sarah, I need to borrow you for just a second. Alright. So you stand up now. Come stand up right here. If we're only based on cute dresses, straight to heaven. Right away. Okay. Tall or not tall? Not so tall. It depends. Now. Yeah. Oh my. Oh. Oh. So we tend to measure our moral righteousness against other people, sliding scale. And we if we were to be really honest, and I appreciate everyone's honesty here, we tend to pick somebody that's not doing quite as good as we are. I mean, I'm not perfect, but I'm certainly better than. You know, I mean, I've got my things, and I'm working on them. It's not fair. It's not fair. Because there are a thousand people better than you That without faith, live a more honest life and live a life of higher integrity, that are more kind, that are more generous, that are more honoring with their words than you are. So when we want to evaluate ourselves with a relative moral standard, it works great for us. But what happens when we're the person further down the line that somebody else is pointing to and be like, well, at least I'm not like Huxley Black. I know. That sucks. You're right. It is unfair. God saw all of this, and he said, let's create a universal standard. And all you have to do is just measure up to this standard. Can I can I change the length of this? Can I change this at all? No. It it's fixed. Right? It's fixed. So in a similar way welcome to church in the park. In a similar way, God has a universal moral standard by which everyone can be measured. Now what's the good news about that? What's the good news about that? It's fair. Expectations It's fair. What? Expectations are clear. Expectations are clear, which is interesting because I feel like we need to talk about that a little bit more. If we were to do a man on the street interview and say, would you say that God's moral expectations are clear? I think you'd get a a wide variety of answers. But but there's something to that. Here. It is written. It is written down. But look at this. Sarah, compared to a baby, is really tall. But every single one of us can be objectively compared to the height of this standard. With each person, this standard doesn't change, does it? It stays exactly the same. But what changes? But what's the factor that changes? Us. Lots of people, different heights. And when we take this to into the realm of morality, we are all on a spectrum in terms of morality. We should probably define that term. Right? Morality. Living a a a right standing life in terms of righteousness. That's what right standing means. Having a right standing with God. God has a standard. There is a criteria. If you want to have right relationship with God, there is a criteria. How many how many things are on God's criteria or standard for having right relationship with him? How many? 10. One. See, I see a few intrepid fingers. Okay. Whole book of Leviticus. Has been paradise eternity with God, and there's only one standard. So if you do this one thing, you can have right standing with God. Who would wanna know what that one thing is? Her mind. What is that one thing? Perfection. Perfection. Easy. It's true. Easy. It's true. And as the worship team comes forward, all you have to do is be what? Perfect. Perfect. And then you're above the line, and you can ride the ride. The only standard that God has doesn't matter your hair color, natural or not. It doesn't matter your age. None of those things matter. The only thing that matters is one thing, righteousness. That's all that God is looking for, Righteousness. Now remember I said that there were two words that we were gonna look at in this passage. The first word was work. A lot of people instinctively know that the standard has been made clear, and the standard is perfection. Everybody instinctively knows in their heart that they fall short of the standard of perfection, so they work. There's that word. They work to try to stand on their tippy toes to achieve that standard. I know that I've I I'm not perfect. I've taken stuff that doesn't belong to me. I've not told the truth. I've been rebellious at times. The list goes on and on and on. But I'm trying to out outweigh my good works with my bad works so that somehow I can boost my stats and reach this standard by working hard. So what is the good news to a world that believes that lie. The good news to the world that believes that lie is trying so hard to earn to work towards right standing with god. The the the bad news is there ain't nothing you can do. The good news, it is a free gift from God. There's one person in all of human history that lived a perfect life. If there was anybody that you should evaluate your life according to as a standard, his name is Jesus, and none of us measure up. The bible says that he was without sin. He nailed it. He got a perfect score on this life. That's what qualifies him to be the savior, not just of your heart and of your heart and of your heart, but of the whole world. He met God's standard. And then he said this, I like you. I like you a lot. I like you a lot despite you. I love you. Because I love you, I will offer to you the reward that I earned, salvation, right standing with God. That's why the bible says, for it is by grace through faith Mhmm. That a person is saved. It is God's grace that he lavishes on a world that does not deserve his kindness and his goodness. Jesus did all the work ever required. So how do we get in on that standard? By realizing and this is probably the the the the hardest part to the whole thing, is by realizing and admitting no matter how hard I try, I will never measure up to the standard on my own. I just can't do it. Stand this is the standard. You're a little bit short, stand on your tippy toes. Uh-oh. Uh-oh. We know what you mean. On on our own, we never can. But because of the free gift of Jesus, because he did the work, we can receive right standing with God. That's the good news of the gospel that the whole world and especially this town needs to hear. They think that they're either too good for it, or they think that if they just recycle more or ski harder, that somehow they'll earn it. They're spinning their wheels. So we cannot those two words, remember, work and reward. There's nothing we can do to work for our salvation. But now let's talk about the second word, reward. The Protestant church has done for hundreds of years a really good job of moving us away from this idea of work that we've moved so far that we've forgotten all about this idea and concept of reward. Most Christians think when they read reward, most Christians think reward is, oh, getting to spend forever in heaven with God after my blood pump stops working. And is that reward enough? Yes. But why does John, in the words that we just read, why does he say, I want you to receive a what kind of reward? A full. Full reward. I want you to receive a full reward. And we've talked about this at tribe. If there is a full reward as an option, then just reasonable common sense from the the grammar of the text, what can we conclude? If there's a full reward, there's a partial reward, and then what? Zero reward. Have you ever thought about that as a Christian if you follow Jesus? Have you ever been taught about a reward? Oh. You almost got your reward between the eyes. So this idea of reward is foreign or distant, maybe even unusual or strange for Christians that have never been taught about it. What does it take for us to receive reward if we're not talking about salvation? How do we get a reward? Working. Work. So there are some there is some work involved. But as as bible believing Christians, we don't believe that a person can work for their salvation, but we can work for reward. Is that what you're saying? You're on the right track. What are some things that you can think of or that the bible says that we can do to work for reward. What? I mean, if there's no reward, partial reward, or a full reward, who would wanna know how to get that full reward? Mhmm. We all would want the full reward, but how many of us know what we gotta do to get a full reward? What you gotta do? Colson said work. Where do I work? What do I do? Relationship. With who? How? What's that look like? We have to know what the reward is. We have to know what the reward is. Oh, we're gonna talk about what is that reward at tribe on a future Sunday, so come back to hear that part. Isn't it interesting? Most Christians don't understand or have understand the concept of reward nor what do I do to earn a full reward. What do you do? Yes. Work. But, like, what kind of work? You follow the assignments that Jesus gives you. Follow the assignments that Jesus gives you. I'd I'd say that's a great answer. We're gonna turn to one more bible verse this morning, and it's in Matthew. So turn to Matthew. Matthew chapter six is the last passage that we'll read 19 through 21. Jesus is speaking, and he says this, don't store up treasures here on Earth. You can use that word reward in place of treasures, where moth eats and rust destroys and where thieves break in and steal. No. No. No. He says this, store your treasure in heaven up in the cloud where moth and rust cannot destroy and thieves do not break in and steal. Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will be also. When it comes to reward, the bible is really clear. Jesus makes a clear distinction. Don't store up for yourselves treasures here on earth, filling up your toy barn or adding to your ski quiver, or if this is your third home here in Jackson, ain't nothing wrong with any of those things. But Jesus is saying, by contrast, on the other hand, instead, store up for yourself treasure in heaven, reward in heaven. So our treasure is not found here on this earth. I don't know if that's good news to anybody. It might need to sink in a little bit that the Lord cares about this life. He cares about your new back to school shoes. Mhmm. He cares about your health. He cares about your finances. He cares about you having friends, close relationships. He cares about you getting married someday. He cares about all of those things. But what he's saying is keep them in proper balance and perspective. Jesus says elsewhere in the bible, don't worry about tomorrow. Today has enough trouble all on its own. He's inviting us, and the invitation today is to shift our perspective from storing up treasure here on earth, but instead make eternal deposits that store up for our lives treasure in heaven. Can you imagine the joy that a person would have to go through this life unencumbered by stress and weight that this world tries to put on us? That's what when Peter's talking, he talks about being in this world, but not of this world. And I also understand, I wanna just say this, I understand because I'm I'm human too. It's so easy to fall into the the traps of worrying about and getting caught up and being stressed out about these things. That's the beautiful thing about Jesus is that he lived in the same life that we did, but he was able to transcend the the the worries and the stress because he was focused on storing up treasure in heaven. Our attitude and our and our focus shifts when we come to this realization. And when we shift oh, I was gonna try to say it from memory, but I'll mess it up. It's worth saying right. Yes. Every moment matters when forever is your measure. Every moment matters when forever is your measure. How do we store up that reward? What do we have to do? Do we have to build an orphanage? Do we have to get calluses on our knees appearing to be pious? Do we have to, like, decorate the roof of our house in wintertime with a a Jesus cross out of Christmas lights? Like, what is it that we do to to get this reward in heaven? Lee said it earlier, just being obedient to the assignment that he's called you to. Jesus said this, if you obey me and I tell you, hey, I want you to go sit with that person at lunch. You don't even have to talk to Just sit with him. Just sit with him. Can I sit here at lunch? Okay. Jesus says, if you give even a cup of cold water under my leadership and direction, I'll see it, and I will reward you for it. Maybe God's called some of you to, like, something super epic. Good. Great. Maybe I could get a little credit for the sermon that influenced you. My treasure's in heaven. But instead, if we follow the Lord in the smallest little steps of obedience to him, We are well on our way to receiving a full reward, and that's my prayer for you, that you would receive a full reward. Now let's take just a moment as we land the plane here to invite the Holy Spirit to help what we've talked about make that 18 inch drop from our thinker down to our knower. And maybe the Holy Spirit would just whisper to your heart and speak to you about and then sometimes is in the most loving way, hands go around your throat. Stop. Stop. Stop. Just be with me, and I'll talk to you about reward. So let's invite the person of the Holy Spirit just to whisper to our hearts for a moment. If you're if you're writing something down, write it down. Maybe you wanna close your eyes. Just whisper to our hearts. Take just a moment and let him love you. He's gone to great lengths. Open your eyes, Jackson Hole. Soften your heart, Jackson Hole. Drop your rebellion, Jackson Hole. Turn to the Lord and be saved, Jackson Hole. Away. At Tribe, we worship the Lord three different ways regularly. We worship the Lord by singing. We did that check. We worship the Lord by honoring the word that was preached. We're doing that. Responding in obedience to the Holy Spirit. Check-in just a moment. We're gonna worship the Lord in one other way with our tithes and offerings. But before we do that, would that be alright if I prayed for you in this moment right here? Lord Jesus, help us. Help us. Help us. Help us to work in the right way, not for our salvation. That's a free gift that you have worked hard for and won by dying on the cross for our sins. Oh, Lord, help us to work for reward, that we would be obedient to your voice, and that you would meet us where we're at, that we would hear your voice say, well done, my good and faithful servant. Come and enter into the reward prepared for you. Help us, Lord, to live that way. We pray these things in Jesus' name. Everybody said, amen. Amen. Our Okay. Done. As Brian was talking, a verse bubbled up for me. This is Mark twelve forty one. Jesus sat down near the temple collection box in the temple and watched as the crowds dropped in their money. Many rich people put in large amounts, then a poor widow came and dropped in two small coins. Jesus called his disciples to him and said, I tell you the truth, This poor widow has given more than all the others who are making contributions. For they gave a tiny part of their surplus, but she, poor as she is, has given everything she had to live on. In all of this, Jesus just wants our heart. That's what this comes down to. And that out of the overflow of that, when we give him everything, that then we get to serve him, we get to love him, and we get to give to him. That's not the works of, oh, I gotta just check off giving the 10%, or I I'm gonna write this huge check and, like, send off this huge help. Jesus just wants our heart. And so when it comes to our tithe and above and beyond that, our offering, I I just pray every week that we just give all that we have to him and lay it at his feet and that you would prayerfully consider as I pray over the tithe and the offering what he would have you give. Because it's not just about checking that box. It's so easy now, especially since we have those autopay things where it's just the same amount comes out of your bank account every week. It's so easy to just let that run, let that ride. But Jesus wants to invite us into more and invite us into furthering his kingdom in mighty, mighty ways. So bow your heads and pray with me. Father God, we lay all that we have, all that we are at your feet, God. We know that you are able to do abundantly more than we could ever ask or imagine. And so we pray that you take the time and the offering, God, and that you multiply it. You multiply it well beyond what we could ever even dream of doing with it, God. That you take our bread and our loaves, you multiply it, God, to further your name, further your kingdom here in this valley to the surrounding region and to the uttermost bounds of the earth. We love you, Jesus, and we are so, so grateful that you are faithful to show up when we ask you to. We grant this all in Jesus' name. Amen. Amen. I wanna keep pounding this one every week because this is the greatest opportunity to get to go, just a few hours east of here to the poorest county in all of Wyoming and get to see some truly, truly incredible work of God as we partner with the Church Foundations for Asians out there serving the Wind River Indian Reservation. That is October second through fourth, and we would love to have a ton of you. It's an awesome weekend to get to camp out and hang together and serve in their fall festival. And so where we're going for baptism is straight down the end of this street until it doglegs right. So then you go on a short walk to a place called Garmin Park. If you're on your bike, it's an easy bike ride down to Garmin Park. If you drove, it's probably worth it to hop in your car, drive down the street, and look for a close place to park. Go across the little bridge and how many of you know where that little park is? Right there is where we're gonna do it. It's late in the summer.
