At Tribe, the teaching on the twenty-one-day fast begins with the question of room. Pastor Brian Wild opened the third week of the Pack Your Bags series by pressing on a simple idea: you cannot receive what there is no space for. Drawing from John 8, he pointed out that Jesus was not correcting obvious enemies that day. He was talking to people who believed in him, who were following him and agreeing with him, and yet he pushed on a sore spot because something was blocking what he wanted to say. The title Brian gave the message was "Make Room in Your Heart," and the fast was presented as the practical way to do that making.
The heart of the teaching is that appetite shapes where the heart settles, not the other way around. From Matthew 6, Brian drew the line between earthly treasure and heavenly treasure and noted that Jesus told his people to store up the kind that cannot be corrupted or taken away. Proverbs 27:7 pressed the same point in a different direction: a full person turns down honey, but bitter food tastes sweet to the hungry. Fasting and self-denial are not the goal. They are the means of creating an appetite for what God wants to put in. As Brian put it, quoting C.S. Lewis from memory, all that is not eternal is eternally worthless.
This particular fast was shaped around developing a heart for Israel, and the congregation worked through real pushback on that together. The answer Brian and others kept returning to was that God's promises to the patriarchs are still in effect, and that the principle of the firstborn passes through the cross unaltered. The call at the end of the message was concrete: write on a card what you will fast or deny yourself starting September 8, and lay it at the front as a public commitment. The fast was not framed as a discipline to prove something but as a way of getting hungry enough to receive what God is already holding out.
