At Tribe, the teaching on 9/11 remembrance starts with an honest accounting of what that day cost. Brian Hunter noted that 2,799 American civilians died on September 11, 2001, and named what was actually under attack: a shared set of principles and values rooted in the dignity and responsibility of the individual. He did not let the grief sit there without tension, though. He was careful to hold love of country alongside love of Jesus, and he pointed to history as a warning against a zeal that collapses the two together and becomes nationalism untethered from the gospel.
The sermon moved from that remembrance into something Brian clearly wanted the congregation to carry further. Using Leviticus 1 and the image of the whole burnt offering, he drew a line from the costliest sacrifice Israel could offer straight to the kind of total surrender God still invites his people into. The connection was personal, not merely historical. To a neighboring shepherd with no stake in the Lord, burning your best unblemished animal would look like pure waste. That is exactly the point. As Brian puts it, "It is a pleasing aroma to God when we hold nothing back and surrender everything to him."
The grief of September 11 and the call to full surrender are held together in that frame. Remembering what was lost on that day is not a distraction from faith, but an occasion to ask what we are actually holding onto and whether we are willing to give it.
