What does Tribe teach about anointing?

At Tribe, the teaching on anointing is rooted in Isaiah 61, where the anointing on Jesus is not a ceremonial gesture but the Spirit of the sovereign Lord himself, and where that anointing carries a specific mission: good news for the poor, freedom for captives, and comfort for those who mourn. Brian drew this out by setting it against the anointing of King Charles III with olive oil at his coronation, letting the contrast do the work. Tree juice on one side, the Spirit of the living God on the other, and with the Spirit comes a commission that no earthly investiture could contain.
Brian also connected the anointing to the question of who Jesus actually is as king. The anointing in Isaiah 11 names the Spirit that would rest on him, and Hebrews 1 speaks of a scepter of justice belonging to the one God has set above his companions. These are not separate ideas but facets of the same reality: the one anointed is also the one who rules, and the anointing defines the character of that rule.
What this church holds about anointing, then, is that it is not symbolic in the way earthly ceremonies are symbolic. It is the real thing descending on a real king with a real territory. As Brian put it, "His territory now exists in places that no earthly king could ever exert their influence, and that's within the human heart."
