At Tribe, the teaching on the blood of Jesus starts with the first Passover in Exodus 12 and never really leaves it. Brian Hunter has returned to this passage more than once, and the thread running through every visit is the same: deliverance has never depended on the condition of the people inside the door, only on the blood applied to the outside of it. The animal selected for that first Passover had to be inspected for any defect, the best from the herd, and it lived in the home with the family before it was sacrificed, making the cost both expensive and personal. When the blood was painted on the door frame with a hyssop branch, something more than a financial transaction had taken place. As Brian puts it, "That night, deliverance depended on the blood applied, not the people inside."
Brian traces that picture forward to the Jordan River, where John the Baptist pointed at Jesus and called him the lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world. Not covers, takes away. The blood of bulls and goats, the Bible says, only covered sin. Jesus, the perfect lamb, does something older sacrifices could never do. The connection runs through Isaiah 53, written centuries before the cross, and through Paul's letter to the Corinthians, where he names Jesus directly as our Passover lamb. The hyssop branch that applied the blood to the door in Egypt shows up again at the crucifixion, and Brian has argued that the thread is not coincidental. Only through the blood of Jesus does a person enter right relationship with God. Religious effort and tradition are not the door; the blood is.
For anyone sitting with the weight of their own history, the teaching at Tribe is direct. Brian has preached that it does not matter what someone has done or where they have been. He says, "It doesn't matter what you've done. It doesn't matter where you've been. Anyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved." The blood is not conditioned on worthiness. The families sheltering behind those painted door frames in Egypt were not assessed for their moral condition before the angel passed over. The same is true now. The blood is enough.
