At Tribe, the teaching on breaking sin habits starts with an honest admission: walking in the flesh is the default. Amanda Luck, preaching in this series, put it plainly that "we don't have to try at all to sin, not even a little. It just happens." The flesh requires zero effort, and the list Paul gives in Galatians five is long enough to include things as dramatic as dividing into factions and killing people alongside the subtler patterns that most people overlook.
Amanda spent real time on those less obvious flesh patterns, things like pride, self-pity dressed up as righteous indignation, gossip that feels like sharing, and the habit of doing nothing when you know what you should do. James 4:17 was brought in directly on that last one: knowing what you ought to do and not doing it is itself a sin. She also drew on a Hebrew word study on avon, the Old Testament word for iniquity, where the letters picture eyes being hooked and hooked again. The point was that you become what you behold, and that the enemy's oldest trick is getting people to turn inward and become their own God rather than looking to God.
The way out is not trying harder toward a list of targets. The fruits of the spirit, Amanda taught, are what naturally grows when you abide in the spirit, the way fruit grows on a tree without the tree straining for it. The measuring stick is not effort but attention to what is actually producing life in you. And the stakes are real: as Amanda put it, "Jesus paid too high of a price for us to choose to continue to live in the flesh."
