What does Tribe teach about calling vs career?

At Tribe, the teaching on calling versus career starts with a simple but important distinction: your occupation is how you make a living, and your ministry is how you make a difference. Brian Hunter laid this out in week six of the 'Work Smarter, Not Harder' series using the story of Gideon, who was most likely a baker by trade. The point was not to diminish ordinary work, but to show that what a person does to earn income is rarely the whole picture of what God has called them to do.
Brian built the case through the sequence of Gideon's story in Judges 6 and 7. Gideon starts alone, hiding in a winepress. By the time the story moves forward, he has drawn ten servants, then the clan of Abiezer, then all of Manasseh, then Ephraim. Notably, the men of Abiezer had wanted to kill him the morning after he tore down the Baal altar, and they became the first wave to follow him. Brian pointed to that pattern as evidence of Gideon's actual ministry: turning ordinary men into leaders. A baker's resume would not suggest that. The calling did.
This message sits on a foundation the series had been building for weeks. Identity answers who a person is. Calling answers what they were born to do. A talent is something a person can do on their own; a gift is something God can do through them. And the week before, the story of Philip had shown that one small step of obedience is what unlocks God's larger purpose. Gideon's story confirms the same thing: the occupation gets you through the week, but the calling is what God has been preparing all along.
