What does Tribe teach about cancel culture?

At Tribe, the teaching on cancel culture starts with a direct question: how quickly would Jesus himself be canceled if he were preaching today? In the opening message of the series "Jesus Would Get Canceled For That," Brian Hunter asked the congregation to sit with what Jesus actually said before deciding whether they agreed with it. The anchor was Luke 9, where Jesus tells the crowd that following him means turning from selfish ways, taking up the cross daily, and losing your life to find it. Brian held that invitation up against a cultural moment built entirely around the self, where self-help, self-fulfillment, and self-expression have filled what he called a God-shaped vacuum. As Brian put it, "We've pushed God so far into the margins that we have created this God shaped vacuum in the human heart." The implication was clear: a Jesus who asks you to deny yourself is going to clash with a culture that tells you the self is the only thing worth protecting.
The murder of Charlie Kirk gave that same tension a sharper, more painful edge in the following week's teaching. Brian named cancel culture directly when he said the enemy's stated goal is to steal and to kill, and that silencing Kirk was meant to accomplish exactly that. The question he pressed into the congregation was personal: Kirk was killed for holding the same biblical values many of them hold, which raises the uncomfortable possibility that boldness about faith carries real cost. Brian also noted that a woman in the congregation had told a friend the day before that tarot card reading was dangerous, something she said she never would have done before Christ. Brian pointed to that moment as a small, everyday version of the same dynamic: following Jesus faithfully will put you at odds with the people around you.
What Tribe teaches, then, is that cancel culture is not primarily a political problem to be managed but a spiritual one to be expected. Brian says, "When you exchange your life for Jesus and you lay down your life and you relinquish the right to happiness, it gets exchanged for joy." The person who has genuinely laid down their life, including the right to control their reputation, is free in a way that cancel culture cannot touch. That freedom is not naive about the cost. It is grounded in the conviction that what the enemy means to silence, God has already accounted for.
