What does Tribe teach about community support?

At Tribe, the teaching on community support is rooted in the image of Moses on the hill in Exodus 17. Israel was under a sudden Amalekite attack, and Moses stood with his staff raised. When his arms dropped, the battle turned. Aaron and Hur came alongside him and held those arms up. Brian Hunter points out that the posture was one of surrender, not personal strength, and that the victory was never really about what Moses could sustain on his own. The community around him made the difference, and their collective obedience unlocked something that no individual effort could have secured.

Brian draws a direct line from that hillside to how life works now. Amalekite attacks, as he calls them, tend to land at the worst possible time, right when things were finally going well, right when a season of provision seemed to be settling in. That timing is disorienting, but it is not random. In those moments, the people around you are not optional. They are part of how the battle is fought. As Brian says, "Your obedience in one area unlocks victory in another area." The congregation holding someone up when their arms give out is itself a form of obedience.

The photographs Brian and Lissa brought back from Saudi Arabia gave the room something concrete to hold. Joy described the petroglyph she saw at the site near Horeb as a central figure with outstretched arms and two figures on either side supporting him, exactly the scene from the text. Brian let that image stand on its own. Whatever one makes of the archaeology, the picture is the same: the work of the community is to hold up the one who is carrying the staff, and that shared act is what the battle turns on.
