What does Tribe teach about discipline?

Drawn from the message where it was actually addressed: the words said from the front, the passages taught, and where to hear the whole thing.

At Tribe, the teaching on discipline is rooted in the idea that holiness is an invitation rather than a demand, and discipline is what you practice in response to that invitation. Pastor Brian Hunter framed the question practically: once you understand that God calls you into relationship, not just rule-keeping, what do you actually do on a Monday morning to move in that direction? The answer he walked through was not a performance checklist but a set of real habits that create space for God to work.

Three practical movements came out of that teaching. The first is making room for God, drawing on Proverbs 27:7, where a full person refuses honey but even bitter food tastes sweet to the hungry. The idea is that when life is already packed, the appetite for God quietly disappears, and discipline begins with the honest decision to remove something rather than squeeze God in after everything else. The second movement is renewing your mind with Scripture, from Romans 12:2, with the picture of a seed planted during reading that God can water later in the middle of a workday or a parenting moment. The third, which Brian acknowledged landed with some friction, is embracing suffering. Drawing on 1 Corinthians 9:27, where Paul describes training his body like an athlete to avoid disqualification, the point was that not all suffering is punitive. Discipline in the athletic sense is voluntary, purposeful, and oriented toward something worth reaching.

Underneath all three is the image from Matthew 11:28-30, where Jesus offers his yoke. Brian noted that a rabbi's whole body of teaching was itself called a yoke, so a Jewish listener would have heard Jesus offering an entire way of life. The disciplines Tribe teaches on this topic are understood as that yoke: not a burden piled on from outside, but a way of living that Jesus himself says is easy and light.

27 but I beat my body and bring it into submission, lest by any means, after I have preached to others, I myself should be rejected.
