What does Tribe teach about divine council?

At Tribe, the teaching on the divine council starts with a challenge to the most common picture people carry of the spiritual universe: two forces, God and Satan, locked in something like an equal standoff. Brian Winton introduced the divine council as a theological concept with real biblical grounding, not a fringe idea, and argued that most churchgoers are working with a picture of the spirit world that is considerably smaller than what Scripture actually describes.

Brian pointed to the Hebrew word Elohim as a category broad enough to include angels, demons, seraphim, cherubim and other spiritual beings alongside God himself. From there he described what the Bible presents as a delegation of jurisdictional authority, where God at some point assigned certain of these beings some oversight of the nations. The passage in Daniel, where an angel reports that the 'prince of Persia' delayed him even though Daniel's prayer was heard immediately, was held up as a window into that kind of behind-the-scenes spiritual activity shaping what happens in the natural world. Those beings, Brian said, eventually failed by allowing worship to be directed at themselves rather than at Yahweh.

The larger point the teaching drives toward is not just that the divine council exists, but what it reveals about God's standing within it. Using Exodus 15:11 and Psalm 89:6-8, Brian pressed the congregation to feel the weight of a truth they may already hold in their heads: that when you actually hold Yahweh up against every other being that has ever claimed divine status, the contrast is almost impossible to overstate. The divine council framework, far from elevating other spiritual powers, ends up making God's incomparability more vivid, not less.
