What does Tribe teach about ezekiel 16?

At Tribe, the teaching on Ezekiel 16 is rooted in one central conviction: God's choice of Israel was not earned and cannot be explained by anything in Israel herself. Brian Connell walked the congregation through the passage and let it speak plainly. On the day Israel was born, no one wanted her, and God came by anyway. As Brian read it, "On the day you were born, no one cared about you. But I came by and saw you there, helplessly kicking about in your own blood. And as you lay there, I said, live." That single image, Brian said, is the answer to the question of why God singled out this people. There is no other answer.

Brian placed Ezekiel 16 inside a longer arc of passages that together trace God's covenant commitment to Israel across both Testaments. He spent time on the marriage language the text uses and pressed the congregation not to treat it as decoration. God did not reach for the image of a contract or a partnership. He reached for marriage because He was trying to communicate the deepest level of covenant commitment in terms people could feel, not just understand. And Brian flipped it: when we enter a marriage covenant, we are copying something God originated, not the other way around.

The message was framed as preparation for a longer series on Israel, and Brian was direct about what he wanted people to carry out of the room. He addressed replacement theology, the idea that the church has now become Israel and that God's original covenant has been transferred, and he pushed back on it from the text. His conclusion was that God's commitment to Israel, the people, the land, and the city of Jerusalem, remains unbroken. He summed up where the congregation stands in that story simply: "He's coming back for his bride, Israel. We just get to be in on it."
