At Tribe, the teaching on faith under pressure starts with what the Holy Spirit actually does inside a believer. Brian opened Easter Sunday by walking through the difference between how the Spirit worked in the Old Testament, coming upon people like Samson for a particular task and then departing, and how the Spirit works now, taking up permanent residence inside every believer. From 1 Corinthians 2, John 14:26, and Ephesians 1, Brian showed that the Holy Spirit searches out the deep things of God, teaches and reminds us of what Jesus said, and floods the heart with light. The practical point he kept returning to was that if the Bible feels dull or Jesus feels distant, the missing piece is cultivating a direct relationship with the Holy Spirit, because the Holy Spirit's favorite subject is Jesus.
From there, Brian turned to the second half of Acts 1:8 and the Greek word behind 'witness,' martys, which is the root of the English word martyr. His point was that a witness is not someone passing along secondhand information. A witness has a firsthand account, something they saw with their own eyes and cannot honestly deny. That is the kind of faith the Holy Spirit produces, not a belief people hold cautiously in comfortable moments, but one they cannot walk away from even under the most extreme pressure.
Brian read from the historical record of people who were executed for refusing to recant, among them Polycarp, believed to have been a disciple of John, who said he had served Jesus for 86 years and Jesus had done him no wrong, and a young woman named Perpetua, who said before being thrown to the lions that she could not be called anything other than what she was, a Christian. Brian was careful to say that none of these people were looking for suffering. What the accounts show is that genuine, Spirit-formed faith produces a kind of inner certainty that holds even when everything outside is pressing against it.
