What does Tribe teach about fighting your battles?

Drawn from the message where it was actually addressed: the words said from the front, the passages taught, and where to hear the whole thing.

At Tribe, the teaching on fighting your battles starts with a simple but searching question: are you trying to fight a battle God has called you to while wearing someone else's armor? Working through the story of David and Goliath in 1 Samuel 17, Brian traced the moment David put on Saul's armor, took a step or two, and told Saul plainly he could not go in these things because he had never worn them before. That small detail, Brian said, is where the whole conversation lives. David knew exactly whose hand his life was in, and that knowledge is what let him fight on God's terms instead of Goliath's terms.

Brian drew out the point that Goliath's challenge was itself a tactic, designed to pull Israel into fighting the way the Philistines wanted to fight. David came with a sling and a stone precisely because that kept the fight on ground where God had already trained him, first against a lion, then against a bear, long before Goliath ever showed up. Brian said it plainly: "The day of battle is not the time to train for battle." The preparation God walks you through in quieter seasons is the actual armor you carry into the hard ones.

The teaching also stayed honest about how this lands in practice. Brian described the temptation to reach for a more familiar or conventional approach when things feel uncertain, and said personally that stepping back into that kind of format felt like putting on armor that did not fit. The room connected that to David's story: God is not asking you to fight in someone else's gear. He equips you specifically, and he sends you with exactly what you need. As Brian put it, "God sent David into that situation with bread and cheese and he came home with a severed head and a sword."

The passage taught · 1 Samuel 17:32-51

32 David said to Saul, “Let no man’s heart fail because of him. Your servant will go and fight with this Philistine.”

33 Saul said to David, “You are not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him; for you are but a youth, and he a man of war from his youth.”

34 David said to Saul, “Your servant was keeping his father’s sheep; and when a lion or a bear came, and took a lamb out of the flock,

35 I went out after him, and struck him, and rescued it out of his mouth. When he arose against me, I caught him by his beard, and struck him, and killed him.
