At Tribe, the teaching on financial generosity starts with a simple observation: giving is less about the money itself and more about what it reveals about where your trust actually sits. Brian has walked through the history of tithing, tracing it back to Genesis 14 where Abram gave a tenth of everything he recovered in battle to Melchizedek, and showing how that practice carries forward through the cross into the new covenant, modified rather than erased. The practical question he puts to the congregation is not whether a tithe still applies, but what it honestly looks like now, and whether you are holding your finances with an open hand.
Luke 14:33 sharpens that question considerably: 'You cannot become my disciple without giving up everything you own.' Brian and his wife Lissa brought that verse out of the abstract by sharing a specific moment in Tulsa when they were under real financial pressure. They gathered their checkbooks and anything that represented their finances, went to the driveway with their kids, held it up, and told God it all belonged to him. Lissa described that as the moment the mental shift happened, from feeling personally responsible for provision to understanding they were stewards of what was already his.
First Corinthians 6:19-20 frames the whole conversation: 'You do not belong to yourself, for God bought you with a high price.' Brian is careful to point out that belonging to God is not captivity. Jesus buys people out of slavery and then gives them free will. But it does mean the whole of a person's life, not just a line item in a budget, is on the table. Time, talent, and finances all fall under the same posture of open-handed stewardship, and the invitation is to stay attuned enough to God's voice to respond when He prompts you to use any of it.
