What does Tribe teach about finding your calling?

At Tribe, the teaching on finding your calling starts with a clear separation of terms. Brian distinguishes calling from identity, gifts, vocation, and ministry, because in his observation most people collapse all of those into one blurry idea, and that muddle makes it hard to hear any of them clearly. Identity answers the question of who God says you are. Calling is a different question entirely: what were you born to do. The series treats identity as the foundation that has to come first, because God spoke Gideon's identity over him before he ever commissioned him.
Calling, in this teaching, is something entrusted to a person by God, not invented by the person. Brian points out that a calling always has a direction built into it, and that you cannot move toward it without actually moving. The power in a calling comes from obedience to something you did not choose for yourself. One congregation member named Bethany put it plainly during the teaching: the power is in the obedience itself. The examples Brian works through, Gideon, Peter, Paul, reinforce that God regularly assigns people to callings that do not look like the obvious fit from the outside, which keeps the credit where it belongs.
Once calling is established, the next layer is understanding the tools God gives to fulfill it: talents, which are natural abilities others often notice before the person does, and gifts, which are what God does when he places his 'super' on top of that natural. Bezalel, Esther, and Tabitha each illustrate how a talent and a calling can fit together so naturally that it is easy to miss that someone still had to see the connection. The whole series is built on a detail from 1 Kings 5:6, where Solomon notes that no one cuts timber like the Sidonians, and the running question Brian keeps returning to is: what does it look like to keep your tools sharp.
