At Tribe, the teaching on generational curses and spiritual open doors starts with the sober recognition that engagement with counterfeit spiritual sources carries real consequences. Pastor Brian worked through Zechariah 10:1-2 and pressed the congregation to take seriously what the passage names: household gods, fortune tellers, and interpreters of dreams. He was careful to say that most people in Jackson Hole have never set up a literal shrine, but he did not let that familiarity become an excuse. His point was that every person's heart functions like a home, and whatever has been given a place of honor there shapes what gets let in. As Brian put it, "If the door is open that you have opened, the enemy literally has a legal right to do it."
Brian extended that logic to drug use, saying that altered states open doors the person never intended to open, and the enemy holds the right to use that access at a time of his choosing, not the user's. Fortune tellers, he said, work the same way: the attractive benefits sit on top while the real terms are buried underneath, like fine print in a contract you never fully read. A positive or even fun experience in those spaces does not mean the transaction was safe. He also drew a careful line around prophetic ministry, noting that a person genuinely gifted and accountable in that area will always point you back to God rather than to themselves, and will acknowledge they are not infallible.
The teaching did not leave people in the problem. Brian framed the Lord's response to honest asking as far more generous than people expect, describing a God who meets people not with scraps but with abundance. And he made clear that closing a door is not the whole of it: "Not only will we close the door but I'm not going to let you just limp on. I'm going to bring healing. I'm going to bring restoration."
