What does Tribe teach about giving money?

At Tribe, the teaching on giving starts with a blunt observation: Brian Hunter points out that "in the gospels, Jesus talks more about finances than he does about hell," and that this is not an accident. Jesus understands that where our money goes reveals where our hearts actually are. Giving, in this framing, is not a fundraising mechanism for the church. It is a spiritual discipline tied to love, trust, and surrender.
Brian draws those three threads out across Matthew 6, Luke 7, and John 6. On love, he works through the story of the woman who anoints Jesus's feet, where Jesus says the person forgiven much loves much. The point is that the depth of love we show toward Jesus is directly connected to how honestly we reckon with how much we have been forgiven. On trust, he traces the familiar anti-worry verses in Matthew 6 back to their anchor in the surrounding passage about money and treasure, making the case that giving trains the heart to trust God with every part of life, not just the areas we feel comfortable surrendering. And on what Brian calls giving Jesus something to work with, he uses the feeding of the five thousand to press the idea that small, offered resources become the material God multiplies. Brian says, "giving reflects our heart and is a practical way of expressing our love for Jesus."
The earlier conversation in the series goes back to Genesis 14 and the first recorded tithe, and lands on 1 Corinthians 6, where Paul says God bought us at a high price. Brian and his wife Lissa describe a moment in Tulsa when, under real financial pressure, they physically gathered everything representing their finances, went to the driveway with their kids, and told God the accounts belonged to him. That moment, Lissa said, was when the mental shift happened from feeling responsible for provision to understanding they were stewards of what was already his. The teaching consistently returns to that posture, holding everything with an open hand, as the practical shape of what it looks like to trust Jesus with more than just the non-financial parts of life.
