What does Tribe teach about guarding your heart?

Drawn from the messages where it was actually addressed: the words said from the front, the passages taught, and where to hear the whole thing.

At Tribe, the teaching on guarding your heart starts with Proverbs 4:20-22 and the conviction that God's word has to move from the head down into the heart if it is going to do anything real. Brian Hunter worked through the Hebrew behind that passage and showed that the word translated 'penetrate deep' carries the image of a watchtower standing at the corner of a field, positioned on high ground to guard what comes in and what goes out. A man in the congregation confirmed he had seen those same towers in Somalia, with women cracking whips from the top to drive birds away from the crops. Brian took that image and applied it directly: when God's word is planted at high ground in your heart, it functions like that watchtower, keeping the enemy out and protecting what is growing inside you. He said he had watched the opposite happen in real time, when people with no real interest in what a text meant would quote and twist verses like 'love thy neighbor,' and that losing sight of God's word is what opens the door to that kind of crooked reading.

The practical conclusion Brian pressed toward was memorization. He had asked the congregation weeks earlier how many Bible verses they had memorized, and not many hands went up. He waited before bringing it back so the conversation could be encouraging rather than a scolding. His point was not guilt but hunger: scripture memorized is scripture that can actually guard you, because as Brian says, 'When you memorize God's word, you are putting Jesus deep into your heart because he's the embodiment of the word.' The phrase 'bring life' in that passage is agricultural language in Hebrew, meaning green, thriving, reviving, springtime. God's word planted in the heart is meant to produce an abundant harvest across every part of who you are.

A congregation member named Lee also brought a word into that same gathering from Proverbs 4:23 about guarding the heart, connected to the Philippians 4 instruction to bring everything to God in prayer rather than carrying anxiety alone. Brian received that and used it as an on-ramp into his own teaching, which underscored what Tribe returns to consistently: guarding your heart is not a posture you can maintain on your own terms. It requires the word planted deeply enough to function, and as Brian put it plainly, 'If it stays only up here, it has no capacity to change my life.'
