At Tribe, the teaching on the Jewish Messiah starts with the Old Testament prophets read on their own terms, not only as background for Christian devotion. In the Advent series, Brian Hunter walked the congregation through Isaiah 9 before naming who fulfills it, asking people to sit with what the text actually says. The picture that emerges from verses one through five is unmistakably a warrior and liberator, a champion who breaks an oppressor's rod and brings light into darkness. Brian's point was that anyone reading that passage, including Jewish readers today, would rightly expect a larger-than-life deliverer. That expectation, he said, is not wrong.
The record-scratch moment comes in verse six, where the promised champion arrives as a child. Brian opened that tension up with the congregation rather than closing it quickly. He noted how little the actual circumstances of Jesus's birth, poor parents, a manger, no ceremony, map onto the warrior imagery that comes before it. His answer to that tension was that Jesus was born with the qualities required to fulfill every title in those verses. As Brian put it, "Jesus is born with the intrinsic qualities that enable him to develop these attributes." The humility of the arrival does not cancel the weight of the commission.
In the final message of the Unbreakable series, Brian extended that picture forward, tracing what the Old and New Testament prophets together describe as the completion of the Messiah's reign. He argued that the return of Jesus, read through the full sweep of Torah and the Tanach, would register deeply for Jewish people precisely because the imagery, clouds, earthquakes, trembling nations, arriving on the mountain, matches how God revealed himself to Israel through Moses. The series as a whole treated the Jewish Messiah not as a topic for distant speculation but as the direction the whole biblical story is moving toward, and the reason antisemitism carries the weight it does.
