What does Tribe teach about joseph brothers?

At Tribe, the teaching on Joseph's brothers begins with the plain facts of Genesis 37. The brothers were consumed by envy over Joseph's coat and his dreams, and that envy moved them through a sequence of decisions: plot to kill him, throw him into a dry cistern, then sell him to passing traders when a business opportunity appeared. The congregation has sat with the uncomfortable truth that the brothers believed they had solved their problem, while in reality they had no idea what they had set in motion.
Pastor Brian has returned to this story more than once, and both times the brothers serve as a window into something larger than their own failure. In the 2024 teaching on Genesis 37, Brian drew out how the brothers' actions looked decisive from where they stood, but God was already at work in a reality none of them could see. The brothers closed a chapter they thought was finished; God was opening one. In the 2026 teaching, Brian used the brothers as a picture of vandalism, people who destroy or deface another person's life simply because that life exists, with jealousy at the root.
What the church has consistently taught is that the brothers' story does not end with their cruelty. The same God who was quietly moving in the meanwhile of Genesis 37 is the God who grafts broken branches back in, who prepares the way ahead and follows behind to spare people from the harm of their past. The brothers meant to end something. They did not.
