What does Tribe teach about letting go?

Drawn from the messages where it was actually addressed: the words said from the front, the passages taught, and where to hear the whole thing.

At Tribe, the teaching on letting go starts with an honest reckoning about cost. In the New Wineskins message, Brian walked through what it actually takes to receive something new from God, and the answer was not adjustment or addition but death. Wineskins are made from animal hide, and something has to die before a wineskin can exist at all. Applied to a person's life, that means death to old mindsets, tightly held traditions, and previously held theological assumptions. Brian says, "New wineskins don't come for free, it will cost you something."

The reason letting go is unavoidable is that you cannot simply fold Jesus in around the edges of your existing life. Brian was direct about this: trying to keep the old life intact while adding Jesus to it destroys both. As he put it, "You cannot add Jesus to your life because if you try to fit him and his ways and following him into just adding it into your life, it will wreck your life." The rich young ruler in Mark 10 made this concrete. Jesus looked at the man, loved him, and offered him one thing to let go of. The man's grip was too tight, and he walked away sorrowful. Brian noted that the sorrow itself meant something. The man felt in his spirit what he was losing, even as he chose to keep it.

The resurrection series Brian opened in 2022 carried the same thread from a different angle. There, the question was new life, and his point was that nothing can experience rebirth in a healthy form unless it first dies. The old life does not get renovated; it gets exchanged. That exchange is the beginning of resurrection as a present reality, not only a future hope.
