What does Tribe teach about letting go of the past?

At Tribe, the teaching on letting go of the past starts with a simple but pointed observation: carrying yesterday into today costs you something real. In the January 2024 message drawn from Luke 24, Brian Hunter walked through the story of two disciples walking away from Jerusalem after the crucifixion, describing Jesus entirely in the past tense. Every verb was past tense. Their grief had frozen their picture of Jesus at the tomb, and Brian pressed the room on that pattern: when hope runs dry, the human tendency is to retreat toward comfort and rehearse what was lost rather than pay attention to what is actually happening right now. As Brian put it, "Don't miss what is because you are stuck in the what was."
The teaching from Leviticus 6, preached in April 2025, gives that same idea a different and more concrete shape. The instructions God gave the priests about the altar fire included a daily task: remove the old ashes before adding fresh wood for the morning. Brian drew out both sides of that detail. Taking out yesterday's ashes means refusing to let yesterday's failures and sin become the fuel you try to run on today, because, as he said, "Yesterday's ashes have no capacity to fuel today's fire." The mercies of God are new every morning, and clinging to what burned up yesterday keeps you from receiving what is being offered right now.
Taken together, these two messages point in the same direction. Letting go of the past is not about pretending hard things did not happen. It is about recognizing that God is a what-is God, not a what-was God, and that the fire He lit in you requires fresh wood today, not a pile of old ash.
