What does Tribe teach about sabbath rest?

Drawn from the messages where it was actually addressed: the words said from the front, the passages taught, and where to hear the whole thing.

At Tribe, the teaching on sabbath rest starts with a pattern embedded in creation itself. Brian Hunter walks through Genesis 1 and 2 to make one striking observation: Adam was created on day six, which means his very first full day as a human being was the day God had already declared as rest. God did not tell Adam to prove himself first or finish the list first. Rest came before work, not after it. That order, Brian teaches, is not incidental. It is the rhythm God built into human life from the beginning, and followers of Jesus are invited to live inside it rather than defaulting to the world's rhythm of hurry and urgency.

The teaching moves from that creation pattern into the life of Jesus, who consistently moved from rest to work rather than the other way around. Before his public ministry began he withdrew. After John the Baptist was killed, when every instinct would have been to act, he got in a boat and pulled away. Brian also points to the women in Luke 23 who, having just watched Jesus buried, stopped their work when the Sabbath began and rested, even in grief. Joy Obot draws on that verse to make the same point Brian returns to: sabbath is not a reward for people who have their lives together. It is a practice that trains you for the hardest days before they arrive. Joy says, "If your autopilot is to fix your eyes on God, then even on the darkest day of your life, that is what you'll fall back to."

For Brian, the principle is not confined to a full day off. He describes it as finding a place of peace before acting rather than reacting from stress, whether that is before a hard conversation, before walking into a room, or before pulling out of the driveway. The discipline at any scale is the same: rest subordinates our own momentum to something larger than ourselves. Brian puts it plainly: "Rest subordinates our will to that of the Father." Tribe also observes the biblical feasts, including Sukkot, partly for this reason, to recalibrate life away from the world's pace and back to God's.
