What does Tribe teach about still small voice?

At Tribe, the teaching on the still small voice starts with a simple, grounding claim: hearing God is not a gift handed to a select few but a skill every believer can develop and every believer is responsible to develop. Pastor Brian opened the series by telling his own story of walking a property in Tulsa, begging for an audible word, a visible angel, anything external, and getting none of it. What came instead was a quiet interior question about how God, as a spirit, communicates. The answer was spirit to spirit, and that moment set the frame for everything that followed.
The biblical anchor for this teaching is 1 Kings 19, where Elijah stands at the mouth of a cave and God is not in the wind, the earthquake, or the fire, only in the still small voice afterward. Brian said he would love it if God always came in the dramatic register, with no ambiguity and no need for faith. But the congregation itself named something important: the whisper implies proximity. As Brian put it, God says, "I've given you a built in walkie talkie." He does not need to shout from a distance because he is not at a distance. Before someone comes to faith, the only signal coming through that interior channel is the Holy Spirit's call to repent. After, the channel opens to everything the Spirit wants to say.
The teaching also names what crowds that voice out. Three competing voices press in: our own internal noise, the voice of the world, and the voice of the enemy. The conscience God has wired into every person works like a compass bearing toward him, but it can be seared and dulled through years of ignoring it. The world's voice often sounds reasonable and even caring, but it cannot be followed at the same time as the clear principles of scripture. Against all of that noise, God does not compete. As Brian says, "He refuses to compete. What I have to say is so valuable, so life giving, I'm not going to compete with the clamor of other voices." Learning to hear him, then, means learning to get quiet enough that a whisper can reach you.
