What does Tribe teach about worry?

At Tribe, the teaching on worry tends to surface not as its own stand-alone subject but as something named and placed in a larger conversation about where a person's hope is actually sitting. In the January 2023 message, Brian Hunter walked the congregation through Psalm 37:34 and pressed them with a pointed, personal question: where had their hope honestly been in the past year? He made the distinction between wishful thinking and genuinely placing hope in God, and the Living Bible's rendering of the verse landed with particular weight in the room: "Don't be impatient for the Lord to act. Keep traveling steadily along his pathway." The picture he drew from the Hebrew was of a rope braided and twisted so tightly together that the splice is nearly invisible, and he held that up as what it actually looks like to trust God rather than to worry.
In the August 2026 message on self-denial, worry came up in the congregation's own words. When Brian asked what it practically means to lay down your life, one of the things people named was surrendering worry, alongside giving up the right to hold a grudge and giving up the right to care what other people think. The implication running through both messages is that worry is a form of self-rule, a way of holding onto the reins of a life that was never meant to be run by the self. Brian's framing is that the self has filled the space God was meant to occupy, and worry is one of the symptoms.
The May 2025 message on memorizing scripture touched on this as well, when congregation member Lee connected a recurring dream to the verse in Philippians about not being anxious but praying about everything. Brian received that as a natural on-ramp and used it to talk about God's word moving from the mind into the heart. The thread across all three conversations is consistent: worry loosens its grip not through self-management but through a reorientation of where hope and trust are actually placed.
