What does Tribe teach about belonging to a church?

Drawn from the message where it was actually addressed: the words said from the front, the passages taught, and where to hear the whole thing.

At Tribe, the teaching on belonging to a church starts with a concrete, ordinary fact: this congregation has met in a Lutheran church, a conference center, homes, parks, a TMC, and a saloon. Brian used that restlessness to make a point that cuts to the center of what Tribe believes about itself. If a church is a location, Tribe barely qualifies. The church is the community God assembles, not the address where they gather.

From there the teaching gets more specific. The particular collection of people present on any given morning has never existed before and never will again. That is not a consolation for not having a building. It is the actual definition of what the church is. The community is what God is doing, and that community is unrepeatable.

The sermon on Genesis 45 held this idea inside a larger story about how God moves people ahead of one another to preserve life, a pattern Brian traced from Joseph all the way to Jesus. The same grace that sent Joseph ahead of his brothers, with no credit going to the brothers themselves, is what gathers any particular group of people together. Belonging to Tribe, on this reading, is not something a person earns or arranges. It is something God does.

Taught from Genesis 45:1-8 · John 10 · Romans 6:23 · 1 John 1:9

“It was not you who sent me here but god.”

From Jesus, the Better Joseph

The passage taught · 1 John 1:9

9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
