What does Tribe teach about bible study?

At Tribe, the teaching on Bible study starts with a simple but demanding question: is the hook you are hanging your beliefs on strong enough to bear their weight? In the message Brian brought on June 16, 2024, he used a physical hat rack to make the point concrete. Every belief a person holds, about human nature, politics, the way the world works, is like a hat. The hook it hangs on either conforms to reality or it does not, and most people never stop to examine which is true of theirs. They hang beliefs where their parents hung them, or where the people around them are hanging, or where something on social media made a hook look appealing.

Brian drew on Isaiah 22 and Ezekiel 15 to give that idea a biblical foundation. The image from Isaiah 22 is a nail driven firmly into a wall, bearing great weight and responsibility. He walked through what the doorkeeper role meant in an ancient throne room so the congregation could feel the full weight of the image. Then he pointed to the foreshadowing in verse 25, that even that nail gets pulled out eventually, and asked who the greater nail might be. The congregation brought up John 14:6 and Revelation 3:8, and Brian confirmed that Revelation 3:8 quotes the Isaiah passage almost word for word and applies it to Jesus directly.

The conclusion the teaching builds toward is that Jesus is not simply one good option among many hooks. He is the one hook that can be demonstrated from the text itself to be the ultimate reality. Any belief not anchored in the objective truth of God's word, Brian taught, disconnects a person from the fabric of God's created order. Bible study, for this community, is not just information gathering. It is the ongoing work of making sure what you believe is hanging on something that will actually hold.
