What does Tribe teach about biblical land promises?

At Tribe, the teaching on biblical land promises starts with a simple claim that runs underneath everything else: the land belongs to God. Pastor Brian laid down three foundation stones from scripture before any historical or political question was touched. Psalm 24:1 establishes that the earth is the Lord's and everything in it. Daniel 4:35 makes clear that he does what he pleases among angels and among people, and no one can stop him or demand an explanation. Leviticus 25:23 adds that the land must never be sold permanently, because it belongs to him and Israel are only tenant farmers. The point, Brian said, is not complicated. God owns his own property, and he is absolutely trustworthy with it, even when we find ourselves in prayer asking why he is not running his decisions past us first.
From that foundation, Pastor Brian walked through the biblical and historical story of the land, beginning with Abraham's journey from what is now Iraq into Canaan and the promise recorded in Genesis 15:18 of land from the river of Egypt to the Euphrates. He traced the story forward through Israel's four hundred years in Egypt, the peoples who moved into the land during that absence, the conquest, the division among the twelve tribes, and then forward through Roman rule, the Ottoman period, the British Mandate, the 1947 UN resolution, the 1948 Arab-Israeli war, the Six Day War of 1967, and the Camp David Accords. He noted that Israel did not fully obey the command to displace the surrounding peoples, and that the Philistines are one example of a group that remained and whose descendants are still present in the region. Brian said plainly that borders drawn without reference to God carry a different weight than those that are, putting it this way: "Borders drawn without God are lines drawn against God."
The sermon did not stay at the level of maps and history. Brian brought the whole conversation to a personal question about the territory God has given each person in Christ, saying, "My heart is that you would own and fully possess all that God has said belongs to you." He warned that the enemy works to shrink that sense of inheritance, and that "that old dirty devil will try to cheat you out of land and say that that's too much to ask." The land promises, in his teaching, are inseparable from a larger call to trust that what God has declared his people's is worth contending for.
