At Tribe, the teaching on the blood of Jesus starts with the first Passover in Exodus 12. Brian Hunter has returned to this passage more than once, and the thread he draws out is consistent: God gave precise instructions for a lamb to be selected, cared for, and sacrificed, and then its blood was to be applied to the door frame. What the text does not say is almost as important as what it does. It says almost nothing about the moral condition of the families sheltering inside. Brian says, "That night, deliverance depended on the blood applied, not the people inside." The weight of the passage falls entirely on the blood on the outside of the door.
From there Brian traces that picture fifteen hundred years forward to the cross. When John the Baptist pointed at Jesus and called him the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world, the word he chose was deliberate. The blood of bulls and goats, the Bible says, only covered sin. Jesus takes it away. Brian has also walked through Isaiah 53, written centuries before the crucifixion, describing a figure who bore what rightly belonged to others. The hyssop branch used to apply blood to the doorframe in Egypt shows up again at the crucifixion, connecting the ancient family tradition to what happened on Golgotha. The teaching is direct: no religious effort or tradition gets a person into right relationship with God. Only the blood does that.
For anyone in the room who wonders whether what they have done or where they have been puts them beyond reach, the answer Brian gives is the same answer the Passover gives. The condition of the people inside the door was never the deciding factor. He says, "It doesn't matter what you've done. It doesn't matter where you've been. Anyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved."
