What does Tribe teach about canceled jesus?

At Tribe, the teaching on this topic starts with an honest admission: some of what Jesus said and did would get him canceled today, and the story of the Canaanite woman in Matthew 15 is one of the harder examples. Brian walked through the passage and asked people to push past the surface-level offense before drawing a conclusion. Jesus travels north into Gentile territory, a foreign woman approaches him asking for help for her daughter, and he ignores her, tells his disciples she is a bother, and then says it is not right to take the children's bread and throw it to the dogs. On the surface, that reads as cold at best and insulting at worst.

But Brian kept bringing the room back to what the woman said before any of that. In verse 22 she calls Jesus 'Son of David,' a title for the Messiah. A Gentile woman, outside Israel, named him correctly while people inside Israel were pressing around him out of curiosity or for miracles. Brian says, "Jesus wasn't insulting her identity by calling her a dog. He was creating a moment to demonstrate her devotion." The offense, in other words, was the point of entry, not the conclusion. The deeper subject was faith, and she passed the moment without flinching.

The broader series frames all of this with a reminder that Brian put plainly: "Jesus did not come to Earth for a popularity contest. Jesus came to fight and win a long standing cosmic battle." That framing matters for reading a story like this one. Jesus was not performing for the crowd or managing his reputation. He was doing something specific with a specific woman whose faith was real, and the teaching at Tribe is that reading him fairly requires holding that in view.
