At Tribe, the teaching on Christianity versus other religions starts with a straightforward observation: every other major religious founder is dead. In his Easter Sunday message, Pastor Brian argued that this is not a small difference. It points to something that sets Christianity apart at the root, not just in its claims but in its whole structure. Every other religion, he said, asks people to climb toward God through moral effort, ritual, or self-improvement. Christianity makes the opposite move. As Brian puts it, "Instead of man trying to climb up to God, God became a man and came down to us."
The teaching goes further than a simple contrast in approach. Brian pressed on the problem all religions are trying to solve, what he described as a hardwired human sense that a relationship with God exists and has been broken. The standard for repairing that break, he said, is not being reasonably good compared to other reasonably good people. The standard is sinlessness, and one broken law is enough to fall short of it. He used the image of a brownie recipe with one unwelcome ingredient: no matter how much good is mixed in, that one bad ingredient ruins the whole thing. That is what moral self-improvement looks like when offered to God as a reason for acceptance. Jesus, being sinless, lived the life no one else could live, died to absorb the penalty that broken law demands, and rose because the law had no legal claim to hold him.
What makes the resurrection more than a historical argument, in Brian's telling, is what it puts on offer right now. Because Jesus is alive, his Spirit is available to take up residence inside a person. The goal is not a better version of yourself or a closer imitation of Jesus. Brian says, "Jesus stands ready not for you to try to live a life like Jesus does, but for you to lay down your life, so that Jesus can live his life through you." That, the teaching holds, is what no other religion offers, not a path to climb, but a person who comes in.
