At Tribe, the teaching on comfort zones starts not with a self-help framework but with an ancient feast. In the Sukkot series, Pastor Brian walked through how God designed the Feast of Shelters to pull people out of their routines on purpose. Building a temporary shelter and spending time in it is a voluntary removal of the comfort and predictability that can quietly become a substitute for dependence on God. That removal is not punishment. It is recalibration.
Brian drew this out of what God was doing with Israel in the wilderness. The rescue from Egypt was only the beginning of a longer project. As he put it, "God got Israel out of Egypt, but the time in the wilderness was intended for Israel to get Egypt out of their hearts." The wilderness stripped away the rhythms and religions of Egypt, let the real condition of their hearts surface, and then received them as his own treasure anyway. The golden calf episode showed how much Egypt was still in them even with God's visible presence right in front of them. Comfort and familiarity had shaped them more deeply than they knew.
Sukkot is meant to replay that pattern every year, so the same work can keep happening. Brian also pointed to Zechariah 14, which says the nations will celebrate this feast during the millennial reign of Jesus, and he made the case that a feast with that kind of staying power is worth learning from now. The discomfort the feast asks for is not an end in itself. It is meant to surface what we are actually trusting, so that trust can be rightly placed. As Brian noted, "Jesus is the prince of peace, but he is also the single most disruptive person in the entire universe."
