What does Tribe teach about cornerstone?

At Tribe, the teaching on the cornerstone begins with Jesus quoting Psalm 118. In Matthew 23:39, Brian Hunter showed that when Jesus says the words "blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord," he is pulling from a psalm his listeners knew by heart, one that includes verse 22: the stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone. By reaching for that text, Jesus was telling the religious leaders plainly who he was and what they had done.
Brian pressed that image toward everyone in the room, not only the leaders Jesus was addressing in the temple courts. The question he put to people was honest and direct: you might assume you would never reject Jesus, but is he actually the cornerstone of your life, or do you find yourself, as Brian put it, in a situation where "the Jesus option is like secondary, tertiary, or fourth?" The teaching does not treat the cornerstone as an abstract theological title. It treats it as a personal question about where Jesus actually sits in the ordering of your life.
The lament behind the passage matters too. Brian pointed to the grief in Jesus's words over Jerusalem, the image of a hen wanting to gather her chicks and being refused, as evidence that the offence Jesus causes is never cruelty. Brian says, "Jesus never offends to be rude, to be mean, to put somebody down. Our minds are offended to reveal our hearts." The cornerstone, in this teaching, is not a cold doctrinal category. It is a person who longs to be the centre of your life and grieves when he is not.
