What does Tribe teach about fear and anxiety?
Drawn from the message where it was actually addressed: the words said from the front, the passages taught, and where to hear the whole thing.
At Tribe, the teaching on fear and anxiety around big world events starts with a call to hold a steady middle ground. In the message 'Filtering the Future,' Brian worked to pull people away from two unhelpful extremes: dismissing signs and events out of hand on one side, and panicking as though the sky is already falling on the other. The word he asked the room to practice was 'maybe,' a posture of honest, open attention that neither ignores what's happening nor loses its footing.
Brian taught that the antidote to anxiety is not ignorance. He was direct that you don't get to put your head in the sand and be ignorant and oblivious to the world around you and still get to lead yourself, your family, your coworkers, and the world around you. Wisdom requires paying attention, and paying attention requires a filter. He laid out three filters meant to work together: God's word, the voice of the Holy Spirit, and a sound mind, drawn from 2 Timothy 1:7. He said scripture alone can be used to say almost anything if it isn't held alongside the Spirit's living guidance and the rational mind God gave you.
He also pressed on the difference between a problem to solve and a tension to manage, arguing that applying the wrong approach to a situation is one of the main things that keeps people stuck in anxiety. For questions about world events and the future, the wise move is learning to manage the tension rather than forcing a resolution that isn't yours to make. The call throughout was to be the kind of people described in 1 Chronicles 12:32, those who understand the times and know what to do.
