At Tribe, the teaching on the Feast of First Fruits starts with the conviction that God's annual feasts belong to the whole family of God, not only to ancient Israel. Brian Hunter walked the congregation through Deuteronomy 26 and Leviticus 23 together, drawing out the specific shape of the observance: the farmer brings the very first of the harvest, not later and not bundled up, but that same day, directly to the priest, who lifts it up before the Lord. The ritual was designed to make the person stop and credit God before enjoying anything the land had produced.
Brian then showed how Jesus fulfills this feast through the resurrection. The scene in John 20, where Mary encounters Jesus in the garden and he tells her not to hold onto him because he has not yet ascended to the Father, is the hinge moment. Jesus is presenting himself to the Father as the first of the harvest. Brian drew a clear distinction between resuscitation and resurrection: Lazarus came back in the same body he died in, while Jesus received what Brian called an upgraded earth suit, a resurrected body. That makes Jesus the firstborn from the dead, and First Corinthians 15 grounds the whole picture: there is an order, Christ first, then all who belong to Christ when he returns. As Brian put it, "Jesus is the first of a great harvest of all who have died."
The place that lands for anyone sitting with doubt or regret is the confidence the resurrection produces. Brian says, "The resurrection of Jesus gives us great confidence that nothing less than total victory is our destiny." And that promise is not conditional on a clean record. Brian made it plain that "it does not matter where you've been. It doesn't matter how much you have blown it." The Feast of First Fruits is not a relic of an agricultural calendar. It is the shape of what God has done in Jesus and what he is still doing in every person who belongs to him.
