What does Tribe teach about finding your calling?

At Tribe, the teaching on finding your calling starts with a clear separation of terms. Brian Sandoval has been careful to distinguish calling from identity, gifts, vocation, and ministry, because in his observation many people collapse all of those into one blurry idea, and that muddle makes it hard to hear any of them clearly. Identity answers the question of who I am. Calling answers a different question entirely: what was I born to do.
The anchor text for this teaching has been Gideon's story in Judges 6. When the angel addresses Gideon, he speaks Gideon's identity over him before giving him any commission, and the commission itself has a direction built into it: go, I am sending you. Brian pointed out that you cannot move toward your calling without actually moving, and that God always establishes who you are before asking you where to go. The Tribe congregation also looked at Peter, sent to fish for people among the highly literate Jewish world, and Paul, the consummate educated Pharisee, sent instead to Gentiles. That inversion was part of the point. God is the one who assigns the calling, and the power in it comes from obedience to something you did not choose for yourself.
The teaching continued in the following week, when Brian brought in Bezalel, Esther, and Tabitha alongside Gideon to show how calling, talent, and gift work together as a set of tools. A calling is not a vague sense of purpose sitting in isolation. It is the destination that gives a person's natural abilities and God-given gifts their proper direction. The Gideon narrative keeps returning in this series precisely because a man hiding in a winepress who goes on to do mighty things is hard to explain apart from God, which means the credit for where a calling leads cannot be taken by the person walking it out.
