What does Tribe teach about gideon?

At Tribe, the teaching on Gideon keeps returning to a single tension: the gap between how a person sees themselves and how God sees them. Brian Hunter has walked the congregation through Judges 6 across multiple series, always landing on the same opening scene, Gideon hiding in a winepress, threshing wheat underground where the wind cannot do its work. That image is not incidental. It is a picture of someone with real ability operating in fear and hiddenness, a dull tool rather than a sharp one. God's first word to Gideon is not a correction of his circumstances but a declaration of his identity: mighty man of valor. Brian pressed the congregation to sit with the obvious incongruity there, because the point is that God was not flattering Gideon, he was speaking from a higher level of truth, the way aerodynamics overrides gravity without canceling it.

The central claim Brian kept returning to is this: only the creator has the authority to define his creation. What Gideon believed about himself, that he was the least in the weakest clan, was true at one level, but it was not the final word, and acting as if it were is what kept him threshing in a winepress. That same misalignment shows up in ordinary life today. People wait until every insecurity is resolved before stepping into what they are called to do, and Brian was direct that this is putting yourself in a position of authority you were never meant to occupy.

The Gideon story also sharpened Tribe's running distinction between occupation and ministry. In the Work Smarter Not Harder series, Brian made the case that Gideon's occupation was most likely that of a baker, an ordinary livelihood with no obvious connection to military deliverance. His ministry, though, was making men into leaders. The evidence is in the sequence: he starts alone, then ten servants, then his whole clan rallies to him, and notably those same men had wanted him dead the morning after he tore down the Baal altar. Brian said that pattern points to something. As one voice in the room put it, and Brian agreed, "sometimes your ministry comes out of that which has tried to kill you." The occupation and the ministry were not the same thing, and confusing them causes people either to feel their job is blocking their calling or to miss the ministry already sitting inside it.
