What does Tribe teach about golden calf?

At Tribe, the teaching on the golden calf starts with a detail most readers skip. When Connor worked through Exodus 32 with the congregation, he drew attention to the Hebrew. The word for god in verse 4 is Elohim, a general term, but by verse 5 Aaron is using Yahweh, the Lord. The people were not simply swapping out the true God for an Egyptian deity. They were attaching God's own name to a distorted image of him, folding Yahweh's identity over something they had already corrupted. Connor's point was direct: "Having a mixed image of who God is is still idolatry."
That reframes the question the golden calf asks us. The danger is not only worshiping the wrong thing. It is carrying a wrong or incomplete picture of the right God. Connor returned more than once to a Timothy Keller quote that puts it plainly: "If your God never disagrees with you, you might just be worshiping an idealized version of yourself." A God who overlooks ongoing sin, a God who is only love with no standard, a God who holds no particular covenant with Israel, none of those pictures are the full thing, and mistaking part of God for all of God is the same pattern Aaron and the people fell into at the foot of Sinai.
The congregation also sat with how quickly Israel forgot. They had watched the plagues dismantle the Egyptian pantheon one god at a time, walked out of Egypt carrying gold Egypt handed them, and still shaped that gold into a calf a few weeks later. Connor noted that the same amnesia runs through the life of any believer. The cycle Israel kept repeating is easy to observe from the outside and easy to live from the inside.
