What does Tribe teach about grace?

At Tribe, the teaching on grace starts with what the word itself means. When Brian worked through Paul's opening to the Corinthians, the congregation traced the Greek root through charis and charisma to arrive at a simple but disorienting conclusion: these gifts are undeserved, given freely by God without any regard to the recipient's merit. Unlike Santa Claus, God does not reserve good gifts for good boys and girls. That is simply his nature and character expressed toward people.
The most concentrated teaching on grace came when Brian worked through Ephesians 2:4-10, pausing after each phrase to ask the congregation whether it was inclusive or exclusive. His point was that the mechanism of salvation is radically inclusive precisely because it is all grace: God did the hard work, the gift is not earned, and no one is disqualified by their past. The exclusivity is only in the means, not in who is welcome to receive it. Brian says, "Humility is the key that unlocks the doors of God's grace," and he grounded that in James 4:6, where James, the brother of Jesus, writes that God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble. Pride, Brian said, is a door that stays locked. Humility is what opens it.
The two ideas belong together in the way Tribe teaches this. Grace is not a vague warmth God feels toward humanity in general. It has a specific shape, arrives through a specific person, and is received in a specific posture. Brian says, "God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble." The scope of that grace is as wide as the language of Romans 10 allows, everyone who calls on the name of the Lord, but it is received only by those who stop trying to earn their way to it.
